      @barney:

      so we have operation “All in on Russia ,Allied landings be damned”       and operation"overkill is good", which could be the same thing.

      They both sound cool :)

      Elk, I like to hit z91 too.  Anything to deter Taranto.

      Does anyone have a really good “Operation save Itay’s bacon” opener to share?  One that doesn’t involve spending every last cent on carriers etc?  One that reliably gets Cairo secure without tying up the luftwaffe too long when they will be needed on the Eastern front?

      The one game I’ve played where germany took out my 91cruiser, I just sent the gib fighter alone to 96 along with Taranto and destroyed Italy’s navy anyway :-D

    • RE: How I Defeated J1 DOW

      I too like to press hard on Europe as US vs a J1 DOW, but I’m not yet convinced you can do so for more than 1 1/2 buys. 1dd/2ss/2AC (stealing Pacific planes to fill) into Europe on US1 is usually enough to complete the allied Med domination, depending on G1 and Taranto success. Add another carrier/dd if necessary, otherwise, 100% Pacific navy for the next 6-8 turns. I call this the “Kill Italy First, but also Kill Japan First!” strategy. Patent pending :)

      My theory is that US cannot afford to build transports until the late game against a J1 Dow. Your job is to be Death, the Destroyer of Navies: AC/dd/ss/fig only for the first 8-10 turns, and swap in some bombers if Germany really wants a Sealion. Have your allies do the dirty work with land units: submarines for days, baby.

      @knp7765:

      bmarine
      SZ 109 = 1 submarine
      …
      Attacking SZ 109 eliminates that UK transport which could go to Canada for more reinforcements or even take Holland which will likely be unguarded. Granted, it will be a small force easily overcome, but still a nuisance.

      …

      Still, I thought it was a better idea to save the sub instead of the battleship. Especially if that dang DD in SZ 109 could have been killed G1.
      So what do you guys think?

      First off, I don’t quite understand the 109 attack. Sending one sub there invites a 4 scramble, which deletes your sub for a 1/3 chance of hitting the dd. The transport will die only if UK whiffs 1dd/4 fighters.

      Your hypothetical is interesting, but I personally think the battleship is the clear choice to keep. As you say, it’s likely the UK will hunt down whatever sea unit is left in 111 (remember, ~66% that the 109dd is alive), and keeping the bb gives you a much greater chance of killing either the 109dd or a UK fighter on defence. Also, ditching the bb makes Taranto a much easier decision for UK.

    • RE: Garg's Notes: Russian Defence Doctrine

      Me1945, if G1 is all land, can UK afford to buy Egypt IC and AB Gibraltar on turn 1? I might do that if J1 DOW and heavy US1 atlantic buy, but otherwise I don’t see how that UK1 buy isn’t inviting an easy sealion=wasted Egypt IC… (Disclaimer: I’ve not played nearly as many games as you; I am just genuinely curious what your analysis is)

    • RE: Where to build Japanese factory: Poll Question

      @EnoughSaid:

      Hmm…. I don’t like this question exactly. I always build an IC in French Indo China turn 2, and sometimes it’s the only IC I build for the whole game. But if I was directly forced to only be able to build 1, I’d definitely prefer Malaya real estate.

      Thing is, this would also influence opponents, and I’m sure I’d have a much harder time taking it. Knowing I can only build one, I’d actually probably end up building it in Hong Kong for the early tempo of a factory and an upgrade to Major IC down the road. The free port being a factor, as well as it being in perfect proximity for Japanese air (Malaya isn’t, and FIC is one-way only), and even the kamikaze sea zone as nice bonus, too.

      (abstaining from Poll)

      Keep in mind that Hong Kong is ineligible for a Japanese Major IC because it is not an originally-controlled territory.

    • RE: Bid Question

      Well, all bidding is technically a house rule, so it’s less a question of “illegal” and more what you and your opponent have agreed on. I think usually the restriction is 1 unit per territory where at least 1 unit already exists.

      So I’d say yes.

    • RE: How many pieces are actually used in this game?

      @iwugrad:

      1.  How many trucks (Mechanized Infantry) could each country reasonably use in a game?
      In my (albeit, limited) experience, Japan, Germany, UK, and Russia–if Germany goes Sealion–require the most. Say, a dozen for starters. Italy could use half a dozen, US forces are usually consolidated (4-6?), ANZAC rarely buys them (2), and France rarely buys anything (0-1).

      2.  How many AA guns could each country reasonably use in a game?
      AA guns are rarely purchased in my experience. Maybe one or two by UK and/or Russia the turn before a big Moscow or Calcutta attack. I’d say paint enough for the set-up, then add two for UK and Russia and one for everyone else but France.

      3.  What naval ships could the Italian player use?
      Italy is very swingy. Either you need tons of ships, or you never need more than you start with. I’d say double what they start with, add two carriers, and add a few subs.

      4.  What ships should Germany and Russia use?
      I’ve never played a game where Russia built ships, but that doesn’t mean it can’t or shouldn’t be done. Maybe add one of everything plus an extra sub and destroyer? Germany often does buy ships. Two carriers, 4-6 extra destroyers, 3 extra transports, and an extra battleship would probably suffice. You often lose a lot of starting subs on turn 1, so those would probably be enough.

      5.  Relative sizes of A) Italy’s air force B) Everyone else’s
      Again, Italy is very swingy. However, even when Italy is getting beat down, air units are often a good buy, because they can support stranded Afrika Korps units, threaten Russian can-opening and defend Western Europe. I’d say half a dozen extra fighters, three tacticals, and a second bomber for starters. It’s possible for Italy to get huge and do big air buys, but for a typical game, that should do.

      6.  How many cruisers from each nation?
      Personally, I never purchase cruisers with any nation as they aren’t as cost efficient as destroyers/subs/carriers. So for me, I would only paint enough to set up the board–perhaps one or two extra for US/Japan. If you’re concerned about allowing options for new players, add two for Germany, two for UK, and three for ANZAC.

      7.  Any pieces other than what France starts with that should be painted?
      Not really. Maybe a mech.

      7.  Any other differences in unit use between A&A Pacific (2000)/A&A Europe (1999) and A&A Global?
      I haven’t played those games in quite some time, but major differences I can think of off the top of my head: mechanized infantry are incredible, fighters are cheaper/bought more, armies can get HUGE. Make sure you have plenty of chips available. I actually make the green chips count as 10s instead of 3s in my games.

      Hope this helped. Keep in mind this is all based off my small experience with pretty vanilla progressions.

      Also, it is really cool that you take the time to beautify your A&A games like this. Please post pictures when you’re through so we can ooh and ah :)

    • RE: Is the Axis Advantage it's overwheling Air Power?

      Granted that I have played very few games of G40, would you mind briefly outlining what the “Axis economic strangle strategy” entails? To my mind, that means Germany gobbling up 15ipcs of NOs in Russia while stalling DDay, not Germany and Japan delaying their DOWs.

    • RE: Russia DOW Japan round 1?

      Interesting. So if the Allies invade Spain and Russia/Japan are still friendly, then Mongolia remains strict neutral? That appears to be the odd reality spelled out in the rule book, though I hadn’t thought that was the case.

    • Russia DOW Japan round 1?

      I’ve been reading through some of the forum games here to glean strategy tips from past games and have really had my eyes opened to so many different strategies. There really are some excellent players on this forum, and I have decisively lowered my estimation of my own ability since joining here.

      Anyway, one thing I can’t really puzzle out is why I see so many Russian players DOW Japan on round 1? The only thing I can come up with, is that they want to deny Japan the mobility of passing through Mongolia in future–but at the cost of some free infantry. That doesn’t seem worth it to me…

      Also, doesn’t this further weaken the Allied strict neutral play, should it be used in future?

    • RE: Question on team arrangements

      Thank you all for your thoughts. Elk, thank you very much for your TUV analysis and FtF/PBEM comparison; both were both excellent points I had not considered.

      I think I will try this for my next 4 player game:

      1. Germany / Italy

      2. Japan

      3. US, ANZAC, Russia

      4. UK, China, France

      I really like the idea of having both Allied players doing something of value from Turn 1, with Player 3’s attention steadily transitioning from Russia to US. My only concern is that if the Axis players do a Sealion/Calcutta Crush (not sure if that’s viable), Player 4 has much less to do. But then, maybe the UK player deserves it if he loses both capitals  :-P

    • RE: Taranto question

      True, I did not mean to say that one bad-luck battle increases your odds of a future good-luck battle. What I meant is that Global 1940 is a much bigger game than, say, Revised. Global has more units involved and more battles that matter. The effect of having more units and more battles is to soften the effect of any one unit missing or of any one battle going poorly. In other words, as you broaden your sample size, you get closer to achieving average results in the aggregate.

      This is why we roll dice :)

      Sometimes they screw you over; sometimes they save your bacon. What I like about G40 is that it is just so big of a game, that any one extreme-case battle will likely be balanced out by the many other battles.

    • RE: Question on team arrangements

      That sounds pretty reasonable. Russia+US and UK seems the obvious split for a 2/2 and then divy up the minor powers however. My initial thought is that ANZAC has a better mechanical fit with ol’ FDR but a better thematic fit with Winston. No one wants or cares about poor France, unfortunately…

    • RE: Barbarossa timing question

      Oh man, these are some excellent ideas for me to mull over…

      1. No buy on G1 sounds crazier than I suspect it actually is. Follow up with either 10Mech/10Tank or a huge navy after watching the Allies trip over themselves.

      2. The goal of flexibility on G1 seems to be forcing UK to turtle. Do most UK players respect the sealion threat and turtle and/or avoid Taranto in response? Or is the flexibility pointless since you’re planning on Barbarossa anyway: better to just start buying ground?

      3. Does the Russian T1 buy matter as much as I’ve worried about it? Inf/Art, Mech/Tank, Air?? Until Germany commits to Barbarossa, fast units are just so enticing…

      4. What about bomber buys on G1/2? I’ve seen that in a couple forum games I looked at and wasn’t sure exactly what the idea there was. Africa beat-down or just a flexible buy?

      Sorry for all the questions. I probably just need to play more and theory craft less, but it’s a lot harder to find a whole day to hammer out a game!
