Well, I have only played OOB since I bought the game. 6 games later and I don’t think the game is broke. I’ve won playing both sides. I’ve been playing A&A for year against one freind of mine. We’re quite good at. Once all the dust settle and the Alpha rules quite changing, we’ll give it a try. One twist we like to put in all versions of A&A is no new IC’s.

I like the concept, but it’s way to much work…

Just playing Global as it is is hard enough for most people.  Let alone including supply managment.

Sorry I didn’t see the other S  :-D. I suggest not using hexagons though. For all our Express games we are using tactical maps not terrain based ones. Its more like D-day then Miniatures.

      @The:

Can you build a mnr IC on a TT you have just captured or do you have to wait a turn?

You can only place ICs, naval bases or airbases in territories that you started your turn with.  So, you would need to wait a turn.

I have posted a basic training thred which explains how to teach a new player how to play but I need some help to play test so setups to make it fair.

Read the basic training forum and then change some units around and play.

The german air needs to be reduced or the SU air increased the land is fine maybe an extra two or 3 su inf.

      This is the start

      SU
      air: 20 ipc (2 fig)
      Land: 70 Ipc (14 inf, 4 arm, 2 art)

      G
      air: 75 ipc (1 bmr, 6 fig)
      Land: 95 Ipc (19 inf, 6 arm, 2 art)

      This is the first playtest

      SU 1

      Build: 4 inf, 4 art, 2 arm save 2
      Battles

      Ukr
      3 inf, art, 3 arm, 2fig v 3 inf, art, arm, fig

      R1
Su lose 3 inf, 1 art, 1 arm
      G loses 1 inf

      (bad dice)

      Retreat

      W russ
6 inf, art, arm v 3 inf, art, arm

      SU loses 3 inf
      G loses all

      SU collect 44+2

Some NCMs left Kar open and Kaz open

Germany toke Cau after 3 rounds of battle and had 2 arm, 2 fig and bmr left

      This is situation after G1

      G collected 50

Russia resigned because they would probably turtle R2 or 3 and Germany would become to strong

Having trouble teaching somebody to play axis and allies try The Dessert Fox’s basic training

      Lesson 1

Teaching the movement of land and air units.

This is pretty easy except a few rules

      #1 Blitzing

Teach this by Setting up a number of situations where you can blitz and you can’t blitz. Then tell them the rule and use some of the examples. Next get them to do some examples and then re-cap on the pieces movement and then come back to a few more examples and see if they remember how to do it if not read the rule and show them and then repeat.

#2 Landing a fig on a zone and then moving a cv to pick it up.

Try do this when you involve naval units

      Lesson 2

Attack and defence dice and battles

Easy just use a battle board and if you don’t have one draw one up

      Lesson 3

      Practice

Use a set up with only the SU and Germany and play. Remind them of how to pmove when they make mistakes of movement

Set the board up with the territories that have units in them(note don’t use the units as what to place there I need to do some more play testing of this as a failed UKR attack on SU1 kills the game)

Also give each power a starting income of 40. Change the territories values like this. Germany: normal value + 2 Soviet Union: Normal value x 2 +1 (except Kazakh which is just double the normal value)

      Turn order SU then Germany

      Also Remove  all naval units

To win you need to take the other powers capital its a Berlin/Moscow race

“Right” is a nebulous concept.  People will always try to do what’s right, whether it’s “morally right” (putting money in the collection plate at church) or “right for them” (taking money out of the collection plate at church).  Often, people will purposefully try to confuse the two, justifying what is actually “right for them” by saying that it is morally justifiable.

This is the pattern seen through history.

I posit that “right”, “wrong”, “good”, and “bad” are subjective terms.  You know what is “right”, you know what is “good”.  Sometimes what is “good” (buttsecks) is not “right” (with your hot sister - unless your culture supports buttsecks with your hot sister, in which case that’s good for you).

But if that is true, all this talk about good, bad, right, and wrong is less important than what is, what will be, and how to convince people of one’s personal worldview.

It’s been mentioned that societies of necessity enforce a certain system of ethics, but I disagree with the idea that there is a TRUE ethical system.  In fact, enforcement of these so-called “ethics” is limited, as violation requires not only detection, but verification (testimony in court possibly), successful prosecution, and real consequences.  How does it matter if it is “against the law” if the crime cannot be detected, or if there is no deterrent?  When a poor man commits a crime for bread, the punishments are inevitably harsher than when those in power commit far worse crimes to retain, maintain, and increase their power.  Is this ETHICALLY correct?  No, not as we are led to understand ethics, but it is clearly and inevitably the case.

Should some abstract “ethic” or “morality” be the foundation of law?  I say the question of SHOULD is irrelevant; ethics and morality ARE NOT the foundation of law, HAVE NOT been the foundation of law, and WILL NOT be the foundation of law.  Those in power will do what they can do to make laws to benefit themselves.  Naturally, those laws will tend to concentrate more power and influence in those few persons’ hands.  The feudal system was not simply the progenitor of the republic, it is the republic’s and democracy’s heir.

Certainly, there is SOME nod to “ethics” in the law; the masses of society have enough control over the process that some true justice is maintained.  But corruption and concentration of power are also natural consequences of the law, and the longer any system is in place, the more the power will concentrate in the hands of the few.

But the concentration of power in the hands of the few is not what I really consider to be ethically or morally wrong, although I think many would call it so.  It is the natural consequence of individuals creating a society.  Can the rabbit be called evil for eating the carrot, or the wolf called evil for eating the rabbit?  In the same way, it is natural for humans to try to profit at the expense of other humans

Arguments over what is right, wrong, good, or bad, are in my mind both unnecessary and ultimately futile.  The real question is - understanding what is natural to the human state, how can the perception of what is natural be altered in a human, or more appropriately, a group of humans?

What I have written has been shocking enough, but i will go a step further and say that I piss on Locke, on Kant, on Thoreau, Confucious, Mencius, Buddha, and even Jesus.  Were each of those worthy of respect, study, and emulation?  Certainly.  But most societies and moral/ethical systems, as I have said, attempt to destroy the individual.  An individual must understand and respect his or own
ability, and understand that it is possible that everyone else could be wrong.  Is it not possible that the very ethical and moral systems that we currently uphold are simply a reflection of the heliocentric astronomical model?

It would be wrong for me to stop there, though, and imply that I think it is wise to simply dismiss those that societies consider important.  In truth, their very status and success is something that is properly studied and emulated.  But as I said before, and state again, societies attack the validity of the individual.  That is the nature of the societal beast.  The lesson to be learned here is not one of respect for society; that lesson has already been learned by any member of any society.

Any individual will have a basic understanding of his or her own self-nature, by virtue of being an individual.  But I think few individuals understand their self-nature in such a way that allows them to apply their knowledge to convincing others of what IS or IS NOT “good”, “bad”, “right”, or “wrong”.

Is what I have written besides the point?  I think it is the point.

If you have a society of peaceful people that respects and loves their fellow man, and a society of warlike people that has tanks and guns and warplanes, in a short time, it will be as if the flower-eaters had never been.  Indeed, I think it entirely possible that has been the fate of morally beautiful civilizations through time.

We are the heirs of those whose arms were drenched in blood.  Those that tell you that there is a some moral imperative, divorced from reality, that must be adhered to are fools, dreamers, or schemers that either have not heeded the lessons of history, or that hope others will not.

To be of any real value, a morality must survive.  To survive, it must be practical.  To be practical, it must take into account individual nature.  To take into individual nature is to take into account the selfish desires of each individual.  So morality requires understanding of the self, the self in relation to society, society, and an understanding of how certain individuals and societies prosper while others perish.

But isn’t this besides the point, again?  For me to say that morality must have a basis in practicality, isn’t that completely against the point of morality to begin with?

I would say again - that is exactly the point.  Morality MUST be practical.  Who treasures what is broken, what is useless, what is defective?  So must it be with morality.  To adopt an impractical morality is to practice destruction of the self, destruction of society, or both.

      @ABWorsham:

What I like most about the game is the gameboard. The actual game did not fit my taste, the underworld and the threat of Atlantis sinking at any turn.

We had two players consumed with the thought of Atlantis sinking. That was the game to them. It was funny with it happened, a player had put all his forces on the island.

AA42 is a great game. I played last night for 6 1/2 hours before 9 VC were obtained by the Axis. Allies made a couple of mistakes by forgetting to purchase units for 2 countries and forgetting to collect income for 1 country. I have been negative about AAP40 by WotC but AA42 is great. I just had to add IPCs, marshal cards/tokens, and the VC chart from Revised. Whether it is WotC or another company making the games makes no difference to me for AA42 but I do think WotC cut corners a little with the release of AA42 and AAG40. I also added to AA42 the damage markers and tech from AA50 and the flight path markers from Revised.

      T

A month or two ago I posted this strategy for Japan in AAR about taking the heat of Germany and taking the Mnr US VC in Nth America

      @The:

A strategy employed to annoy the USA is to land units in Alaska and take the pressure of Germany so they can take Moscow. But why not take this one step further and focus on taking LA/San Fran?

This is an alternate Japanese strategy to that of the Moscow/Berlin race that is seen in most games. This could be taken over to global '40 but it would be a lot harder to preform. Also could be used for spring '42.

For this strategy to be implemented you will need to following things to have happened:

      Allies play the standard KGF

      No UK factory in india

      No US factory in China/Sinkijiang

Here is the standard move for J1 on this strategy:

India capture with inf in FIC and Shanghai transport used to move inf from Shanghai to FIC and air support.
Move 2 inf from Japan to Shanghai with sz60 tran.
      Build:
      2 inf 6 Ipc
      2 Art 8 ipc
      2 Tran 16 ipc
      total 30 ipc

      Earned 33 Ipc

      J2

Shanghai tran that will be close to FIC moved to sz 61 and move 2inf from Japan to Manchuria and move them into Shanghai.

      You will have in:
      Shanghai: 5 inf
Japan: 2inf, 3art,1 arm, 1 Bmr and maybe 1 fighter
India, FIC, Manchuria 2-3 inf and maybe 1 fighter in each

      Build:
      same as J1

Ipc earned 33 left over from buy 3 total 36

      J3
Take china with air support 2-3 fighters and 5 inf in Shanghai
Only if no SU forces in it and 2-3 inf plus fighter in it.

      Build
      Same as J1

at the end of this turn you should have:
      Japan: 4inf, 5art, 1arm
      SZ60: 1bb, 6 tran

J4 this is the important turn

Invade Alaska with 3 tran carrying 1 inf + 1art each. Use your BB bombardment to kill the inf. If Alaska has to large a force in it use all 6 tran and take all units out of Japan or use your trans to shuck units onto the mainland and push for Moscow. You shoudn’t have to do this as Britain and the USA will be focussed on taking Berlin and preforming D-DAY.

After you have taken Alaska you will be earning 37 IPC per turn.
You have 36 IPC to spend

      Buy
      3 inf 9
      2 art 8
      2 tran 16
      total 33

      end turn IPC total 40

      Japan: 4 INF, 4 ART, 1 ARM
      SZ60: 5 tran
      Alaska: 3 INF, 3 ART
      SZ 63: 1 BB, 3 TRAN

      J5

4 TRANS shuck 4 inf + art to Alaska
3 trans in sz63 return to sz 60

      Build
      4INF, 4 ART

12 ipc to do what you want with

earn the 37 plus what you didn’t spend

      J6

same as J5 build and move 4art+inf to Alaska
Move 4 tran back to sz60 from 63

      J7…
      same as J6

when you have a big enough force probably J6 move units into Western Canada. Every NCM move units that landed in Alaska to WC and strike at LA and place build units into there and try and hold from the American counter. If succesful build up your force and strike at Washington. Even without taking Washington you will win as the US forces will be trying to take LA back from you and with Calcutta and LA under your control if you and Germany have lost no VC’s you have 8 if Germany take Lenningrad or Moscow you win if Playing LHTR. If not and going for 10 vc’s Germany should be able to take Moscow and win. If playing 12 you will attack Washington and Germany will attack London. You should still win with both of you sending forces through the former SU and through Africa to collect IPC for yourselves and take them from UK.

This seems easy in concept but is hard to pull off but if successful you will win easily. Because of its diffuclty to be successful players usually stay in Alaska/WC and threaten LA rather than attempt to take it.

I tried it in revised and pulled of the capture of LA but not Washington as Moscow had been weakened by a huge German force about 6 ing, 6 art, 30 arm against about 45 SU inf We also had leningrad and calcutta so we won with one to many VC’s (We played LHTR)The Uk and US 1-2 punch in France failed as the US had to try and retake two VC’s in one turn

I’m now going to try and attempt to convert this into a G40 strat while still taking China and Far eastern Russia.

We assume that Russia moves 18 inf into Bry

Also will only see pacific side of the board as what happens in Europe doesn’t affect it much except if US starts spending Money in the Pacific

      J1 build
      Mnr
      2 tran
      save 0

      Attack
Hun and Yun with normal forces

Take Amu with forces in Korea and Man

Take Cha and Anh with forces in Jeh and Sha

Take FIC with forces in siam
Hun and Yun loses may be different to what I show. But thats ok as it doesn’t majorly affect the strat.

      NCM
      Fig For-Japan
      Fig Okin-Japan
Inf Okin v/ tran Z20-19-20 -Ksi
      DD,CV,Tact,Fig Z33-36
      CC,DD,BB,SS Z19-36

      Place
      Mnr in Shanghai
      2 tran Z6

      Collect
      33

Now some assumptions to be made
US retreats from Phil with fig to guam
      2 inf v/tran to Z23
      DD - Z23

It doesnt matter if US doesn’t retreat from Phil it will mean you will occur some loses though
Lets assume China takes back Yun and strengths its position

I have entered in some standard Brit and ANZAC moves.

      J1 complete J2 coming soon
