    • RE: G40 Self propelled Artillery

      @chrisbump86

      Hi Chris,

The intended design of the Self-propelled Artillery unit was to support “fast moving” units that operate alongside Tank & Panzer units - such as Mechanized Infantry etc.

The background for the limitations in production numbers and Nations that can produce SPA is partly based on:

      • Play test results (game balance)
      • Historical production numbers of SPA compared to the production number of Tank units
      • Historical use of SPA
      • Ease of Game Play

At this point our play test results - and their use during recent games - show that mostly Germany and the Soviet Union are using the SPA units.

The Soviets most often combine their SPA units with their Soviet Guard Infantry units - either as part of Soviet Army Corps - or as independent units.

Prior to the introduction of SPA units Germany is already familiar with the use of SPA since the German Waffen-SS units include SPA units.

    • RE: G40 Self Propelled Anti Aircraft Artillery unit

      @chrisbump86

      Hi Chris,

The Self-propelled Anti-Aircraft Artillery unit (SPAA) is operating under rules for Anti-Aircraft Artillery, with a few exceptions.

      The primary differences are:

      • Movement: 2
      • Limited production numbers
      • Germany, Soviet Union and United States can produce Self-propelled Anti-Aircraft Artillery units

Since their production numbers are limited, the cost is 5 IPC which is the same as regular AAA.

At this point the play test results indicate, that Germany produces the SPAA to support their frontline units on the Eastern Front.

For the most part the Soviet Union does not produce the SPAA as long as their regular AAA have not been lost in combat.

This is also true for the United States.

We expect to release these rules in Early 2026.

The scale of which A&A G40 is designed to represent must be taken into account.

We assume that the original A&A Classic rules concerning AAA are more or less represented in the A&A G40 version.

We have devolped an Expansion rule for AAA: Flak Tower (see pdf file below).

Naval Mines can enter game from Early 1940 (Game Start) - but only Escort units can transport and place them at any sea zone border.

      In other words:
Naval Mines that are produced from game start must be stacked in the Capital until they can be transported and placed by Escort units later in the War.

    • RE: Global 1940 & 1943 Expansions Game Reports

Global 1940, No. 20 Game Report:

This is the only post in the No. 20 Game Report.

      Players:
      Axis: The Captain
      Allies: Keld R.

      Germany:
From Early 1940 to Early 1941, Germany captured Western Europe and prepared for an attack on the Soviets in Late 1941.

A German defense of Western Europe mostly included Mines & Infantry.

      Soviet Union:
The Soviets prepared for an agressive defense with a combination of Fighter units, Tank Armies, Army Corps and Soviet Guards.

When Germany in Late 1941 launched the attack against Russia, the Soviets agressively counter attacked the Germans with heavy casualties on both sides.

The Soviet Strategic Plan was skillfully coordinated with both United States and United Kingdom.

      Japan:
The Japanese Strategic Plan was to capture most islands in the South Pacific while the Chinese Front was secondary.
From Late 1940 UK units from India supported the Chinese defense - and by Early 1943 China was still defending against the Japanese invaders.

      United States:
The US Navies in the Atlantic and the Pacific were gradually reinforced massively.
The US Strategic Plan in the Pacific was to support Russia - with US troops landing in Soviet Far East - and moving towards Japanese occupied China.

      United Kingdom:
UK Lend-Lease Air & Tank units were shipped to Russia from Late 1941.
UK units were contiuously attacking Western Europe with Paratrooper units and Naval Assaults.
UK declared War on Japan in Early 1940 and units from India immediately supported the Chinese defenders.

As the War went on, Axis forces were gradually eliminated by agressive Allied counter attacks on land, sea and air.

By Late 1942, the combined US and UK Naval forces in the Atlantic - and the US Navy in the Pacific - were superior to the Axis Naval forces.

      The End:
In Late 1942 the UK Navy in the Atlantic moved from sz 91 to sz 92 - and thereby leaving the US Navy vulnerable to attack from the German Kriegsmarine.

The German Kriegsmarine launched an attack on the US Navy - and eliminated an enormous US Invasion Fleet.
This left the US troops stranded in Gibraltar and Morocco.

German casualties were heavy - and the Kriegsmarine was facing elimination from a UK Naval Counter attack.

In Early 1943 after the catasrophic US Naval losses in the Atlantic, the US launched a massive Naval and Amphibious Assault against sz 6 and Tokyo.…

      to be continued soon…

Update on G40 No. 20 Game Report; 7th December 2025:

The US Navy attacked the Imperial Japanese Navy in sz 6.
All Japanese Warships, Air units and Transports were eliminated.

US Troops supported by the US Army Airforce landed on the beaches of Homeland Japan.
Japan activated the Home Defense - and received 2 Infantry units. These were the only Infantry units in Japan, since all other land units were Artillery and Mechanized Infantry units.

Japanese AAA failed to destroy any US Air units…

The US Army swiftly eliminated 75 % of all defending Japanese units.

But the costs were extreme for the US Troops & Air units…

After 6 rounds of Combat, the last attacking US units were eliminated by a few surviving Japanese Mechanized Infantry units.

A few Japanese troops barely survived the massive US attack on the Homeland of Japan.

Since the US Navy in sz 6 was now facing a counter attack from a superior Japanese Airforce and Japanese Naval units - the US Navy would certainly be eliminated.

This scenario left the USA with no Warships anywhere on the game board - and so the initiative was lost for the US player.

The overall situation in Early 1943:

      • The German Army managed to halt the Soviet offensive on the Eastern Front
      • Western Europe was heavily defended by German & Italian forces, including numerous Mines
      • Italian troops were firmly holding on to Egypt - even though almost all of North Africa was under Allied control.
      • The threat from any US Amphibious Assault in Western Europe was eliminated.
      • US Troops in Soviet Far East were cut off from any reinforcements
      • The Japanese Navy was the only Navy in the entire Pacific Ocean - with no Allied Naval units to stop the Japanese expansion
      • Western USA was captured by Japanese Infantry units…

The Allies surrendered in Early 1943 after the failed amphibious attack on Japan.

    • RE: Global 1940 & 1943 Expansions Game Reports

Global 1940, No. 19 Game Report:

This is the only post in the No. 19 Game Report.

      Players:
      Axis: Mads G.
      Allies: The Captain

      Germany:
In Early 1940 (round 1), Germany launched a Fullscale Attack on the Soviet Union.
Infantry, Panzer and Waffen-SS units attacked on the entire Eastern Front.

France was captured by the Germans in Early 1940 - and the UK Navy in the Atlantic was eliminated.

      Soviet Union:
As the Germans launched a Massive Assault on the Soviet Union in Early 1940, the Soviets immediately received 10 IPC - and 1 free Tank unit (Urals). No counterattacks were launched against the invading Germans.

Novgorod was evacuated - and all units were moved to Belarus in order to block the way to Moscow.

The Soviets hastily planned for a Defense in Depth in order to make each captured territory as costly as possible to the Germans.

      Japan:
In Early 1941 Japan launched a large scale invasion of several islands in the Pacific.
Fighting was still ongoing in China with heavy casualties on both sides.

      United States:
In Early 1941 the United States activated the US National Guard due to a Japanese attack on the Philippines.
US Naval units & troops moved to French controlled Morroco and prepared for landings in Western Europe - to take of the pressure on the Eastern Front.

      United Kingdom:
As Germany attacked the Soviet Union in Early 1940, UK air units were hastily sent to Russia as part of Lend-Lease.
In Late 1940 three UK Lend-Lease Tank units were also sent to Russia.

A massive build-up in London of Paratroopers, Landing Crafts etc. took place in Early 1940 and Late 1940.

      Italy:
Italian Naval & Air units managed to clear the Med from Allied surface Warships.
North Africa saw some heavy fighting between Italian & British troops.

      Early 1942:
German & Italian troops on the Eastern Front failed to capture Moscow - which clearly was the major object in the German Strategic Plan.
By the time the Germans reached Smolensk in Early 1941, there were simply not enough German & Italian manpower to attack Moscow.

The Germans instead attacked south towards Rostov & Caucasus.

Soviet troops re-captured Smolensk, Belarus, Bryansk and Tambov - and secured the Capital long enough for the Red Army Conscription Infantry to be activated.

Japanese troops captured all of China - and all supply lines were heavily protected against enemy attacks.

United States launched attacks in Normandy & Holland - and prepared for an invasion of Western Germany.

United Kingdom launched attacks against Norway, Southern France and Denmark.

Italian forces in Europe were scarce since most units were shipped to the Middle East and the Eastern Front.

      The End:
By Early 1944 Germany was surrounded on all sides - the remaining German & Italian troops on the Eastern Front were eliminated by a superior number of Soviet and British units.

Japan was still fighting with strong forces against the US, UK and ANZAC - but Japan lacked the manpower to attack the Soviet Union.

By Early 1945 the Germans were holding on to France, Germany, Denmark and Greater Southern Germany.

With strong Soviet forces in Poland - and US & UK forces in Western Germany, the War ended with an Axis surrender in Early 1945.

Pictures for this Game Report will be posted later.

The 6th Northen European A&A Wiking-Con event 2025 has ended.

All winners are encouraged to post their Game Reports at the Global 1940 & 1943 Game Report thread.

Concerning Game Table 1 (Berserker & The Captain):
There was an OOB rule misenterpretation in Late 1940, where Japan attacked UK and ANZAC forces in the Pacific - and the US activated the US National Guard - but was held out of the War until Early 1941.
This flaw was not clarified until the US turn in Early 1941.

This mistake clearly rests on my shoulders.

We tried to fix it - and after a short evaluation of the overall game in Early 1940 and Late 1940, a plausible agreement was reached in order to continue the game, rather than starting the game over from the beginning.

Nonetheless we decided to cancel the Axis victory after the game ended in Late 1943.
We also rewarded Berserker with the prize (hand-painted units: 6 Waffen-SS Infantry & 4 Waffen-SS Panzer units) for putting up a good fight.

We are already training and preparing for the 7th Northern European Axis & Allies Wiking-Con event which we truly look forward to.

People are using this forum both to meet in person - and to play online (TripleA).

For further questions concerning playing on TripleA, please contact barnee on this forum.

      Example:
In Denmark we are many Axis & Allies players who meet in person. We are playing weekly (more or less) from Late September to Late May every year.
Maybe even a few games during the summer.

During this period we also have the Axis & Allies Wiking-Con events, where we invite players from all over the World to participate. You can find more information about the Wiking-Con events at the Event section on this forum.

      Concerning game reports:
You can find more information at the Global 1940 & 1943 Expansions Game Reports thread under the House Rules section.

      Great,

The CE units purchased in Early 1940 should be upgraded to Waffen-SS Assault Pioneer units in Late 1940.

The Waffen-SS AP also have strong defense capabilities which are useful on the Eastern Front.

Doing so, you can purchase the remaining 4 CE units anytime during the game.

Seems like you have great fun & challenge - which is exactly what it’s all about.

    • RE: Strategy Guide Global 1940

The following should be considered as part of a German Strategic Plan that includes a War of Attrition against the Soviet Union:

The Combat Engineer units are extremely important on the game board. This is true especially for Germany.

During the heavy fighting on the Eastern Front, Germany can use the Combat Engineer units to transport Infantry, Mines etc. from Berlin (Germany) to Baltic States and Eastern Poland - back and forth for as long as needed.

This is important, since Germany only has a capacity of 2 Strategic Rail Movement in each round.

Also, as soon as German Combat Engineer units are represented on the game board, the Soviet player must think carefully how many Mines to produce - and where to place them.

One of my favorite German Strategic Plans includes the following:

      • Early 1940:
Germany purchases 2 Combat Engineer units and 6 Mines (plus other units)

      • Late 1940:
Germany purchases 2 Waffen-SS Assault Pioneer units (plus other units).
During Non-Combat Movement these Waffen-SS Assault Pioneer units each transports 3 Mines to German controlled France.

      • Early 1941:
The 2 Waffen-SS Assault Pioneer units transport the Industrial Complex in France to German controlled Yugoslavia.
The Mines are left in France and can be dug in to defend the coast line somewhere in Normandy/Bordeaux and/or Holland Belgium.

      • Late 1941:
The 2 Waffen-SS Assault Pioneer units transport the Industrial Complex in Yugoslavia to German controlled Romania (or maybe even German controlled Bessarabia if the German units captured Bessarabia in Early 1941 - and are able to hold it against Soviet counter attacks.)

      • Early 1942:
From Early 1942 Germany produces units at the Industrial Complex that was captured in France and transported to the Eastern Front.
The 2 Waffen-SS Assault Pioneer units have now fulfilled their first mission - and are now able to take on a new mission (attack, transport units, remove enemy Mines etc.).

We hope that this will inspire you to develope further strategies that includes Combat Engineer units and Waffen-SS Assault Pioneer units.
