    • Capital Markers

Am I the only one that misses the old huge capital markers that marked the original capitals on the board in the original AA games? I don’t know there was just something very satisfying placing your tiny little marker over the enemy’s captured capital. Also I’m not digging these terrain styled maps/boarders I kinda miss the politically colored ones from revised. What do you guys think of these aesthetic changes, they going in the right direction?

if the brits have a ship in sz 119, (the one left of Scotland) by T2 you can plug the canal at 112 T3 and hold up sea lion til T4 giving the US time to counter

    • RE: USA all air buys?

I have tried this and it has worked. Bought all fighters turn one. Then all bombers turn two by turn three england landed in France and the US had like 6 fighters, 2 bombers, 2inf a tank and art in france after england had secured it the previous round. US took italy next turn and game ended shortly after. It was a few years ago so i cant recall anymore specifics. The key is pooling all available aircraft and witholding from Op. Torch. Also England needs naval dominance which sometimes doesnt happen with a G1 carrier build

      @Gargantua:

      Without having watched your game,

any of the following could have happend.

      1. You didn’t attack with enough
      2. You didn’t actually buy ALL transports
      3. you lost too many planes in other battles
      4. You lost too many units in other battles
      5. you didn’t kill enough of the UK’s units, and they were able to return a number of fighters to france
      6. you didn’t kill enough of the uk ships to stop them from bringing up reinforcements from the med/canada

i think thats a yes to 3 and 6. that was one game where my planes got destroyed over the atlantic and a UK BB survived. How many ships can Germany reliable destroy of the UK’s cause it seems that its real easy for the Luftwaffe to spread itself thin and get annihilated

Wait, how do you Sealion cause I took france, bought all transports 1st and 2nd turn and then hit them with everything I had 3rd turn and I lost terribly and had to instantly concede the game.

    • RE: Average age of players

I remember when I was 7, we just moved to our new house and my dad had put this mysterious game on a high shelf in the basement. It read Axis and Allies and all I could see was this awesome dude with a pipe in his mouth. I asked my dad about it and he said it was a boring and complicated game and I wouldn’t like it. A year later I convinced him to take it out and me and my brother who was 5 set the game up with my dad’s help and when we were done I asked him how to play and he just shrugged and said I don know. I was so pissed that we spent an hour setting up and couldn’t even play the damn thing. Wasn’t till I was 11 that I spent a week reading the rules over the summer did I finally figure out how to play. Been playing ever since and me and my friend have kept the same ftf group for like 9 years.

    • RE: IC in Egypt

I was going to start a new topic but found this.  I’m halfway through a game and the UK built a minor IC on turn 1.  It turned out to be a good decision because Italy has been taken out of the Africa picture but it was a very risky decision in my opinion.  Here’s what went down:

UK1 - minor IC, rest was infantry in London.
IT1 - advanced on Alexandria and amassed troops on the border of Cairo (from troops next door).  Then they used their 2 cruisers, 1 battleship bombarded Cairo with the two transports carrying 2inf, 1art, 1 tank, 1 fighter and almost took out Cairo (1 UK tank was left).

I’m not sure as the UK I would risk that again.  Is Cairo a lost cause for the UK?

I’d say it’s a lost cause if. The attack you described is pretty typical of Italy’s advance. Even if UK cuts the Italian navy in half turn 1. Italy can still hit Cairo with alot, assuming they sent troops to egypt turn 1 and are in a position for more for turn 2 as well as built fighters each turn. A dedicated Italian player will take Cairo by I2 no matter what unless the dice is in your favor. Holding it with only 1 unit left shows how much of a gamble it is usually it means giving Italy a complex

    • RE: Mech. Infantry

I have a kinda related question if you have a tank, mech and tac bomber attacking can the mech blitz with the tank and the tac get boosted +1 by the tank or can the tank only help either the mech or the tac.

    • RE: German Sub Strat.

I don’t really get why you can sit off the coast of a capital with subs and take money from then. All their resources should already be at the capital and they should only be able to take money from non capital territories. I also would have prefered convoy lines drawn through multiple teritories to the capital which could be cut anywhere down the line.

    • RE: OOB: German attack on Russia

Buy all tanks first two turns.  Attack all out with concentration to leningrad if Russia abandons/lightly defends it capture with all tanks and inf from finland. If strongly defends ignore and go to Moscow by turn 2 start shuffling all motorized units from France to Russia. turn 3 start defending Europe with infantry and move to Moscow one space per turn and Moscow should be yours by turn 5.  If Leningrad is yours buy two tac if allies sent support to Moscow or if you think you need more support.

    • RE: The "Bell-Fey" Manoeuvr

We call this “blooping” based on the high pitched sound we make in our game group, (bloop) when a single infantry takes an important but empty territory during combat movement because of carelessness or because there were other more important territories to defend. It rarely happens to capitals but has occurred a few times in the past. Usually this happens at the end of the game when both sides are getting tired and careless mistakes are bound to happen.

    • RE: Politically correct strict neutral blocs

so what your saying is that if someone attacks a neutral only the other neutrals in the block get pissed and go pro-enemy instead of all neutrals? If so then I think Spain and Portugal should be in like an Iberian block just so the allies have more at stake if they invade Spain. Other than that looks like a solid list i was thinking of doing somthing similar bet never got around to it.

It would be cool if there was a set up for the E40 board, seems like it is divided enough that it could be possible to adapt a set up for it.

    • RE: Just more questions.

okay so I know this will almost never come up but lets say UK has a fighter in Eastern Persia and they want to go through the Caucuses the shortest possible route. Can they fly over the caspian sea even though it isn’t labeled or must they fly around it?

    • RE: Let's Talk About Tech, Baby!

      Here’s what I’m thinking…

Germany- Super Subs, Improved Mech (maybe Adv Artillery, Rockets, Paratroopers, or Jets)
      USSR- (maybe Increased Factory Production)
Japan- (maybe Improved Shipyards or Long Range Air)
      UK- (maybe Radar)
      ANZAC- (maybe Increased Factory Production)
      Italy- (maybe Increased Factory Production)
USA- War Bonds (maybe Paratroopers, Increased Factory Production, Improved Shipyards, Radar, Long Range Air, or Heavy Bombers)

I’d probably give each country one tech that won’t unbalence the game maybe advanced artillery for USSR, Improved mech for germany and improved shipyards for Italy because they were working on modernizing their old battleships and on an aircraft carrier.

    • RE: Vichy France

I think the best way to deal with the situation without completely unbalencing the game is to make France relatively neutral to both sides after Paris falls. After all the only reason France was hostile to the Brits was because of the invasion of Madagascar. Before that they just collaborated a bit with the nazis without any intention of actually fighting the allies. Since relations are still okay between france and the allies when the game starts I’d say that France should become some sort of independent neutral when Paris falls.

    • Vichy France E40

I was thinking of a simple solution to the Vichy problem. What if after the end of the round in which Paris falls France becomes a semi-pro axis neutral, allowing German not Italian units to pass through its north african and syrian territories but can’t take them over unless they declare war. The rest of the territories are treated like true neutrals but attacking them will have no bearing on the other neutrals. The french fleets, except the madagascar destroyer, are still allied and move on the french turn. The destroyer defends the coast of madagascar and will engage any units involved in an invasion of the island. Then if the allies hold Paris for one turn France becomes an allied power again.

    • RE: NATO v.s. USSR

If you want to avoid the confusion of Nuke rules you can have the scenario represent Operation Unthinkable, a plan by Churchill to invade the soviet union in 1945. Could be USSR, Japan, Com China Vs America, Britain, Nat china, maybe France. I always did want to see a good cold war version of AA, good luck with it.

      Welcome to the forum.
Yeah, I too was disappointed at the lack of British representation. They defiantly deserved a leader and flag on there. Also France was generously represented with soldiers, an aircraft, tank and even De gaulle walking with some cronies.

Or when all else fails you can do what the soviets do and lie on your back and fire your rifle into the air at oncoming planes.  :-D
