    • RE: AA50 Rules Errata and Q+A

      @Funcioneta:

      A question about paratroopers: Can enemy surface fleets stop paratroopers movement? I think it should be so, because sea zones with surface fleets are hostile, but paras description says “territories”, so I’m not totally sure

      Thanks in advance

      I don’t think so, because nobody “owns” sea zones.

    • Movies to watch while playing AA

      Sometimes we’ll put a movie on in the background…

      Memphis Bell
      Hunt for Red October
      Saving Private Ryan
      Master and Commander
      U-571
      The Bridge over the river Kwai
      The Great Escape

      any others?

    • RE: Another sub question

      @Krieghund:

      Ogrebait is correct.  If your sub fires, it must suffer defensive fire, unless there’s nothing left to shoot back or the target is another sub that also gets a Surprise Strike.

      I’ve always raised an eyebrow to the mutual sneak attack. Is that like spy vs. spy from Mad magazine?

      Woah Imperious Leader!

      I actually intended to ask the question with respect to 1942 scenario. I realize however how many of the responses were to the 1941.

      It’s cool, no worries.

      I think this is interesting, but I am curious to see how this changes with different IPC amounts. Did you choose 120 because it factorability (it’s a word, now)? What would happen if you use 36 IPC?

    • RE: First game.. Opinions.. and lots of questions!

      @Cmdr:

      I happen to think Japan is easier to crack than Germany, but I am in the distinct minority.

      I agree. I’ve often seen the Japanese player not take a devoted USA seriously enough. In this case Japan looks good the first few turns but then it can get real ugly real fast.

    • RE: Western Canada and Seazone 1

      @LuckyDay

      I think he means how a sliver of the Hudson Bay (Sea Zone 1) touches the left edge of the board. He’s interpreting this to mean that there is a boundary (the wrap-around edge) between Western Canada (right side of the board) and Sea Zone 1. My feelings are that this is folly.

      LOL! I guess my rulebook has a misprint.  :-D

      Less talking. More getting me a beer.

    • RE: Western Canada and Seazone 1

      Here is what the rulebook says explicitly on page 7:

      “Units can move between adjacent spaces (those that share a common border). The game board wraps around horizontally. Territories and sea zones on the right edge of the board are adjacent to territories and sea zones on the left edge. (Note that sea zone 20 connects to sea zone 55; sea zone 21 connects to sea zone 44; and sea zone 25 connects to sea zone 43.) The top and bottom edges of the board do not wrap around. Any pedantic players’ attempts to bring the USA Bomber from the UK to a Hawaiian Sea Zone battle Turn 1 must be greeted with prodigious eye-rolling; said player must then go posthaste to get me a beer from the fridge.”

      Clear as clear can be, I think. I’ll have a newcastle, please.

      You mean the sliver of the Hudson bay that touches the edge of the board? I really don’t think that counts as touching Western Canada.

    • RE: Defending against Subs

      @Capt.:

      On the matter of multiple detroyers for fodder, why not bring more subs instead of more destroyers?

      Because then your fleet would be susceptible to an aerial attack (without an attacking destroyer of course). It’s interesting that there are some instances where you DON’T want to have a destroyer.

      It almost looks illuminated from underneath. I like it very much. You should make the boards and sell them dude. Seriously. I would buy one.

    • RE: Non-combat moves

      Woah, this is not how we have been playing. I just checked the rulebook though and you guys are right. We always played that, during the non-combat move phase, you can’t move into or out of a territory captured during the combat phase (except for planes which fly out and AA guns that move in.) I guess the reasoning was that everything was happening simultaneously. I see now that only the combat moves are to be considered simultaneous. Hmmm.

      Thanks for the clarification.

    • RE: Subs are awesome

      @shifty:

      I’m usually with Jenn on this one.  I’d much rather have a ton of destroyers mixed in w/a couple subs then a stack of subs.  However, they can be a pest for UK.  If the UK navy is wiped and there is a stack of german subs in any SZ surrounding UK, you can’t get a destroyer in the water to attack with the 50 bombers without getting attacked by the subs first (thus, not being able to utilize bombers).

      You could build a destroyer in every adjacent seazone to the UK. Destroyers are blockers, and one will survive to attack.

    • RE: Tech roles and YOU

      I invest in one tech dice per turn for each of the following: UK (41), Japan (41, 42), USA (41, 42). However once a country has two techs die, I stop buying. I think you have a decent enough chance with two, and investing anymore is a waste (because you lose all tech die when anyone hits a 6).

      Then once I get a tech, I begin again, investing in one per turn until I have two.

      I really like how techs are treated in AA50. It encourages a slow investment that eventually will generate unpredictable benefits. Just like real research!
