Say Germany realizes Italy will can-opener. So they don’t build ANYTHING in the east and go for the west.
If Italy can’t can-opener, Germany will build something for the east, meaning less for the west.

But if you can use it to land USAAF planes, it might be worth it.

OK. Here’s why you sometimes NEED a blocking force:
Your retreating northern stack is 1 space away from Moscow. The German mech/tank stack is 2 spaces away. You NEED a blocking strategy strong enough to hold off the Germans so your stack can get there.

I agree that it helps the Allies.
And there could be a malicious surrender: UKE surrenders, giving the African territories to Germany, and before Italy can react US starts blitzing through the south, ADDING ABOUT 15 IPC’S TO THEIR VALUE. Same could be done with France.
It really helps the Allies and screws the game balance.

Subs do not block movement in any way.

+1 to the previous.
However the only ships I build as Japan before attacking ANZAC/US are subs and rarely a blocking or anti-sub destroyer. Transports too.
Ships simply aren’t a good investment for Japan.
Every game I find myself too concerned with the US as Japan, and the next time I’m just as concerned.
Sure, the US is big, but they aren’t going to snatch Japan out from under your nose. You don’t need 2 carriers parked off the Western US. Put those to use elsewhere.

1. No surprise, I am a fan of tech as well.
2. I believe that tech has, except in AA50, been too difficult.
3. However, it makes no sense that IC’s help with tech. IC’s feature factories belching smoke and unskilled laborers on an assembly line. Tech research features scientists in white coats.
4. I have 1 word: researchers. Or you could make tech rolls 4. -

I’d add something to the previous:
And the Russian doesn’t see it coming.
Any smart Russian can see 2 Italian tanks moving with the German stack, possibly clearing blockers, and will devote say 4 inf. to the blocker to ensure they’re safe.

3 subs a turn with a fighter now and then isn’t hard, and it should be enough if Japan looks threatening and SBR’s do well.

I think what he means is a “Strategic Unit Raid” where the units don’t get to fire back.
Perhaps strats on a 1? With AA fire, it’s not close to worth it, but without AA…
