RE: Doubt about submarine movement
@marshmallow-of-war thanks again. For a second there I had my hopes up!..
I can come to terms with the fact that Gibraltar is deeper and wider and keep respecting the rules.

RE: Doubt about submarine movement
@marshmallow-of-war Thanks.
I understand the rules and I follow them. But I don’t see the logic of it. Why can any sub cross through Gibraltar but the same rule does not apply in Denmark?
In my opinion both straits should operate in the same way.

RE: 2nd Individual Play Test- it's still so much.
I am in your same situation, getting back to the game after a while.
One thing I notice about Italy (which seems to be the country that you are having most trouble with) is that if they are not dealt with early in the game, they can be a huge help to the Axis powers.
I see a lot of discussions about doing or not doing the Taranto raid. For me it is a must. Otherwise the Italians can get a very comfortable position in the Mediterranean and be a headache for the rest of the game. It happened in the last two games I played.
Specially if the get their hands in Gibraltar and Cairo. Then they effectively block the Allies from getting in the mediterranean and get a lot of IPCs from their national objectives.
What I could not find yet was a solution if I am the Italian player and I get “tarantoed”. It basically keeps me off for the rest of the game.

RE: Planes move through enemy territory?
@klykke89 I was confused too. The rulebook clearly states that planes can fly over enemy territories as if they were neutral, and that AAA guns can only shoot at planes when the territory the AAA gun is in is being attacked.
However I have seen some house rules that actually allows AAA guns to fire at enemy planes that fly over the territory they are in.
I think that is cool, but I also think that gives the AAA gun much more power and value and that they should cost more than 5 IPC if that is the case.

Don's DE40 map
Hi,
I really like this map, the art, the fact that some territories come with extra IPCs, etc.
It will be probably the next one I will print when I have the chance.
I have not been around for a long time and I probably missed somethings but I have some doubts about this map that I hope you guys can help me with:
- Oil territories. Someone already replied this one to me, has to do with having oil facilities and transporting oil to industrial complexes to generate IPCs, which I think gives a whole new dimension to the game.
2- What is it with the cities with a Train symbol? How does that work?
3- Also, I noticed many new victory cities. How are they put to use exactly?
I am assuming this map involves a bunch of new rules that are maybe posted somewhere, so if any of you guys can direct me there, I will be thankful.
Cheers

Doubt about submarine movement
In the rulebook it states that, despite of who controls Gibraltar, any submarine from any power can cross.
However it doesn’t say the same thing about the Danish strait. I believe it should be the same, it makes sense to me that submarines can move undetected in both cases.
How do you guys normally solve this?

RE: Global 1940 first game in years
@mikawagunichi thanks
You will have to excuse what is probably being an ignorant in terms of an Axis and Allies player, but I am not familiar with the bidding system actually (if you care to elaborate, I will be thankful).
All the purchases of the first turns were based on what the various youtubers I was watching did. To give you an example, Germany purchased an aircraft carrier, a destroyer and a sub (if I recall correctly), you can check that on Young Grasshopers video about German strategy.
The only one that went a bit further in terms of what to purchase was General Hand Grenade in his video about Russian strategy. He gives you a complete list of purchasing for several turns, basically a combination of land units and units to counter attack (tanks, planes or artillery), but mostly land units (infantry).
I am sure I made many mistakes, but answering your question, I played with dice and yes, the Allies got really lucky when it mattered the most.
I recall one time Germany was attacking London, I got 12 hits out of 16 possible on a 2 for the Brittish. In that same battle, the German bombers rolled all 5 and 6 in their turn, so yeah, luck had a lot to do with it.
I should have said that the Axis was obliterated mainly in the Pacific. Germany actually was the only thing giving them hope, but they failed in the Sea Lion operation (twice) and could only get to Stalingrad.

Global 1940 first game in years
I have played one entire game Global 1940 for the first time in years. I got into this game watching Young Grasshopers videos when I was living in Canada back in 2016.
I got my copy of Pacific 1940 and Europe 1940 back then and played a few games. Then we moved back to Spain and the game has been lying around until we got our new house.
Now that I have the space I got Ambizi’s map file printed in vynil and put in PVC of 5mm, so it was back in the table.
Because of COVID and the lack of players in my area (someone mentioned that half of the community out there is Canadian, right?), what I did was watch strategy videos from Young Grasshopers, General Hand Grenade and some other youtube users and apply their strategies.
Young Grasshopers’ strategy for Germany and Japan, General Hand Grenade for the Russians and a third youtube member whose number I keep forgetting (my apologies) for the UK strategy. I took care of US myself.
Of course I could only apply the strategies for the first turns and then move it from there, but I had so much fun doing this for the past few days.
I also played with the tournament victory conditions from Young Grasshoper to be able to finish one game within a week (I can only play after work, so I do not have much time).
The Allies obliterated the Axis. I wanna say the other youtube creator is called Sireblood? His UK strategy really held the Italians and Germans back, and in the Pacific Japan started really well with a J2 attack, but it all went south from there, to the point that by the end of the game (after 14 turns) they were only in Japan itself, while Anzac, US and the Brittish controlled the whole map.
Germany made it to Stalingrad, but was held both in Leningrad and Moscow.
So in the end the Axis only achieved the objective of controlling the North of Africa, while the allies achieved several (controlling all the Chinese territories, not having capital ships from the Axis on the board, liberating Philippines, controlling the 18 islands in the Pacific and controlling Malaya, Kwantung and Shangai).
The war was mainly won in the Pacific side. I had tons of fun and I really hope I can convince some of the people in my gaming club to give this a try, whenever the circumstances are better.
Cheers!

RE: What's the best material to use when printing a custom map?
@the_good_captain I printed on vynil. It rolls, etc etc, but in the end I would recommend that you add that vynil to some kind of material to keep it in perfect condition. Mine has been rolled up for a while and then I had trouble keeping it flat.
I glued it to a 5mm layer of PVC and now it is perfect, though it doesn´t roll of course, but I keep it stored behind a shelf with games and it is always ready to go.

RE: Biggest customized map
@c82rcn it looks pretty neat. Mine is set up in the living room right now, at least until my wife asks me to bring it down (expecting that at some point this week)

RE: Axis & Allies Community Map Files
Hi guys. I am looking at Don’s deluxe edition map. Really love it. But since I am new here, I see that some territories have like an “oil” symbol on them and also like a “train”.
Also I noticed that some neutrals have like a cavarly symbol on them.
I was wondering if you can enlighten me about the meaning or use of those symbols, I guess there are a set of new rules somewhere out there?
Thanks in advance

RE: Biggest customized map
Like proper generals then, moving troops around with pads. Mine is 1,80 by 0,90 (sorry, metric system over here), I think that is somewhere around 6 x 3 I guess…

RE: Biggest customized map
@c82rcn thanks. That has to be amazing to play in…

Biggest customized map
I was wondering which customized map from the ones available here would you recommend. Also, what type of materials you use to print it out and what is the biggest size available.
I have one vynil map of the Ambizi’s G40 map and I am considering to put that in PVC or something similar to make it completely flat, your advice on this is also welcome.
But if there is a better and bigger map out there, I might go for that one, based on your replies.
Thanks a lot in advance,
Sergio

Hello everyone!
Hello fellow members of this community.
My name is Sergio Gonzalez and I live in Spain. I briefly lived in Canada for two years where I got into the Axis and Allies gaming.
I generally play G40 and not as often as I would like to. It is quite difficult to find commited players or even the time to play, but it is what it is.
I am working on printing one of the community files maps in vynil and a mixture of PVC and aluminium, hopefully I get that done soon and I can invite some friends over to get them into the game.
This latter part is proven to be difficult with the actual situation, but hopefully in the future I can spread a good disease…the disease of playing Axis and Allies as much as possible!!

RE: Ambilzi & Grasshopper's 1940 Global Map (Video Added)
Makes sense. Thanks for the heads up.

RE: Ambilzi & Grasshopper's 1940 Global Map (Video Added)
Congratulations on the amazing job. Just got the file printed and it looks amazing. Thank so much for all your efforts.
My question would be, what if I wanted to make it a bit more wide. Lenght is perfect, I just think that a bigger map will make it easy to place all the units in smaller territories. In your experience with printing, is that recommendable?

RE: 1942 Second Edition Battle Log
VERY VERY lucky. Specially taking into account that they only lost 6 units.

RE: 1942 Second Edition Battle Log
Thanks for the comments. We made several rookie mistakes and you were absolutely right, the Axis ended up winning the game. The Germans conquered Calcutta and built a fleet there. They moved into Manila two turns after and despite the Americans attacked Moscow that very same turn, they couldn’t take it and the game was over. In this game Germany basically won the game by themselves!
