    • RE: E40 after action reports

Yesterday I won as Axis. In short my strategy was to threaten UK with my first buy 2 trannies and a CV. I eventually used them to strengthen Scandinavia and scare off the RN.

I built an IC in Norway and together with the trannies I made sure Finland had a massive army. Only on turn 4 I DoWed Russia and captured the Baltic States, Karelia and Vyborg with large armies. Bes and EP I took with small forces. Russia managed to kill my Baltic army, but the other two, combined with an invasion force took Leningrad, even though his first defense dice rolled only hits! Literally every inf, armor and fighter hit the first round. Cost me my complete inf I brought.

It was never recaptured. Italy managed to do well in Africa and built an IC in Egypt. It took all of the Middle East and even invaded southern Russia.

The US was too late and even though they landed with a massive army in Normandy I could take it back (with only one tank left…), but that was enough. It took them too long to get another shipment accross the sea, because Moscow and Stalingrad would have been captured by then. The allies gave up.

An attacker can retreat its transports if all other ships are sunk? I never knew that! It also seldom happens, usually you bring enough support to let the invasion take place.

In this case it would even save the transport, because the Suez can’t be crossed by the French DD.

    • RE: New Pacific/Global Setup

Used this new set up for global yesterday. The set up is more realistic, but it also makes Japan a little weaker. And that is not what the Eurpean Theatre needs. Germany and Italy struggle already. With a weaker Japan even more so…

Any people close to Amsterdam? I live in Zaandam and have a couple of friends with whom I play A&A games. We can always use another player.

    • RE: E40 after action reports

One game of Europe played (and one global).

I am not going to describe everything, but at one point Germany made a heroic and daring attempt at invading Leningrad and with lucky dice rolls got it. They even held on to it for the rest of the game. But still the allies won, becasue Italy got kicked out of Africa, in southern Russia Germany and Italy couldn’t hold on to any conquest and the Brits landed massively in Norway, costing the Germans 13 IPC (2 NO’s).

I would not go as far as saying the game is broken, but the axis should outsmart the allies to win. The allies can fix little mistakes/unfortunate rolls, but the axis mistakes/unfortunate rolls can lose the game.

At this time I think the Russians are too rich. Or perhaps not too rich, but they already start with some expensive units (airforce, mech inf, tanks) while in A50 they almost only had inf to start with. In this game they can almost only buy inf with one or two tanks/art.

But I need at least 5 more go’s on this game to tell if changes need to be made.

    • RE: 1st Global game done

I finished a global game yesterday. I was Ge and It, a friend was Ja, another was UK, ANZAC and FR and another China, US and SU.

Even though my Italian fleet was left alone and a I1 where I lost nothing and gained 5 territories, followed by another couple of good turns for the Axis the Allies won.

The moment the US and SU were at war the megafleet of the US moved to the most eastern territory of the SU and landed 10 land units there, while their bombers took care of the transports and small ships at the Japanese coast (and after that landed next to the land forces in the Soviet Far East). Yes, US bombers can take of from San Francisco, attack the Japanese Sea and land in Soviet Union. Japan had to pull its navy back and with that the game was over. No more expansion for Japan, a couple of relatively bad rolls from Germany and Soviets pumping out hordes of infantry and it was all over.

To balance things a bit more we are going to use the Italian Fix (we thought up that rule and then read in on here too) and use the Japanese extra NO of 10 IPC while not at war (except with China). I don’t think it will be enough so maybe we will even consider super subs for Germany, Warbonds for Italy or Super Factories (what’s the name?)for Japan.

Mind you, we used the new set up as described in Canucks post (less aircraft in the Pacific). The naval base in NSW is logical, but extremely powerful for ANZAC. They get both NO’s on turn 1 and can reach almost everywhere that’s important for them.

    • RE: Seriously?

      @special:

In the long run the allies always came back, sometimes they won (thanks to cunning combined tactics and/or a few japanese mistakes), and we also had some stalemates (japan having all the mainland but lost all naval force, while USA dominated all the seas, with Japan getting 1 VC short). Yes India falls, so what? that doesn’t mean japan has won. It can be even useful for the USA (capturing UK territory becoming american). Even though Japan might have more chances to win, doesn’t mean the game would be broken. just harder for the allies (who really have to synchronise and cooperate at their maximum potential)
I really think some people give up too fast.

USA can’t capture British territories if the British capitol is taken.

    • RE: Malta

Just an hour ago we finished a global game. Allies won, even though the Axis had the dice on their side. We had the new set up from Canuck/Larry.

In it Malta wasn’t really critical, but significant nonetheless. The UK landed a FTR there on UK3. The Italian navy was king in the med sea, but with that move on Malta Italy had to alter their plans. That fighter had to be destroyed because of its central location and ability to kill trannies, DD’s of maybe a CL. Italy ‘lost’ a turn because it had to invade Malta (with 1 inf, 1 art, 1 tr and 1 BB>SB). I needed that force to invade Egypt, which got postponed an entire turn.

    • RE: Imperious leader’s best moves for AAE40/ AAG40:

I would never move the British CL away from the med. 50% chance of hitting an Italian ship and deny SB’s, so Egypt and Jordania are less likely to fall.

    • RE: German Push into USSR

With the new set up provied by Larry (see Canucks post) India could survive a little longer. Russia also gets 18 inf in the far eastern provinces. Since attacking UK on J1 is less likely I would probably attack Russia on J1. And with Germany I would attack on G2.

Not that this is the way to go, because I am only going to try that tommorrow for the first time (hopefully my opponent isn’t going to check this forum ;-)).

I am going to try it in the global game tommorrow. Hope it doesn’t make Japan weaker to help Germany with Russia.

One typo in the set up. The UK transport moves from sz37 to sz39…

    • One tough French destroyer

I just have to share this one with you guys.

Yesterday evening we played Europe and I was UK and France. The French home guard rolled terribly (in the first round of defensive die rolls I only hit one out of twelve!). But my French destroyer near Madagascar moved north to the Red Sea. After a few turns Italy was on a roll and captured Egypt and Jordan. The turn after that the Italians moved through the Suez and attacked my DD with 1 DD, 1CL, 1 TR with 1 inf and 1 art and a fighter. The land units were to invade Sudan. My DD killed each and every unit and survived! 44 Italian IPC on the bottom of the Red Sea.

A second wave of attacks moved 2 DD and a TAC to avenge their countrymen. I killed the 2 DD’s but was sunk by the TAC. That is by far the most useful action of the French so far and it really hurt the Italians. It halted their advance so that the Brits from South Africa could take Sudan a little easier (without the extra art and inf) and from there threaten Egypt. Because of that DD Italy was on the defensive instead of the attack.

We gave the captain and the crew a posthumus the Légion d’Honneur.

    • RE: G1 Barbarossa

You can always only attack inf in Russia. On G1 there is nothing else on the Russian border and on every other turn Russia will be smart enough to leave only inf at the border.

      @smutminer:

      • Is it possible in the non-combat fase to convert a friendly neutral territory with only an AA-gun? I think so because it’s a land unit.

      Welcome to the boards!

      1. Pretty sure that’s not what they meant (has to be infantry, artillery, mech, or tank), but Krieg will confirm.

Krieghund, can you confirm or repudiate please?

It means you can upgrade your IC and still build three units there. I read it somewhere from Krieghund when Pacific came out.

Edit: quoted the wrong post, this answers your question before this one…. ;-)

    • RE: Russian Fleet

An hour ago I finished a game of Europe. My Soviet ally (I was UK and France) bought a sub every turn of peace. When war broke out the 4 subs spread out and caused a lot of German headaches. Norway’s convoy was blocked, another sub went to the French Atlantic coast to rair convoys, another one bolstered the British fleet (the Germans also had a sizeble fleet), and one was underway to the med sea.

Eventually the allies won, starting with a succesful invasion of Norway (Germany losing 13 points, because of 2 NO’s) and a major victory of US troops against the Italian African Army.

Because of the Soviet subs the Brits could turn all efforts towards an invasion fleet and a couple of units in South Africa (Italy captured Egypt and build an IC there).
