EU3 started off a bit meh, but after the expansions it’s the best grand strategy game imo. I love to unify countries. I think in eU3 the most difficult one is Brandenburg>Prussia>Germany. You start off as a lesser partner in a personal union with Luxemburg and have to worsen relationship with them to have a chance of freeing yourself. Then you have to fight at least the Polish, Pommeranians and Teutonics to get your core provinces for forming Prussia.

And apart from the wars and politics you also need to keep an eye on your technology, religion, trade, colonization, missions, etc. Trying to become Holy Emperor, get the favour of the pope, etc is great.

And one thing i like about it is that it isn’t just a metter of throwing money at it to get your way. Getting bishops from your realm in the holy see is quite random, and money helps it just a little bit. Taking National Ideas that increase piety helps, but it is never certain. Same goes for votes to become emperor, etc.

It has nothing to do with the seazone, but with Belgium. If you go all Russia, then the French get back on their feet after the initial attack very fast. And the French start threatening those lands very quickly. Turn three is indeed a bit soon, but four or five isnt.
And dont forget you can only attack Holland with seven units, not counting the fighter. So thats six threes and one two. Taking it in one turn is not certain at all.

I dont take Denmark or Holland anymore. Especially Holland gives you another place to defend and Denmark makes you send troops the wrong way. With average dice you lose twelve IPC. And i dont have the map in front of me, but i believe you cant attack them both in the first turn. Kiel has only three inf and four art. And then again, it isnt a sure thing capturing them in one turn. So that leaves you with even more losses.

Long story short, it isnt worth it. By the time Holland pays itself back the French are threatening it, so it gives them even more IPC.

Indeed. And the allied ipc is gained way easier and sooner then the centsrals. The African and neutrals IpC are gained within two turns, while the CP has to fight for every IPC. So they will lose loads of troops gaining tts while the allies even gain troops from Portugal etc.

Or splitting forces up, which is probably the worst strategy.

I have tried the new SM rule in three games now (and plus one move from ports) and the Centrals still lost, but at least they had a much better chance. They had taken Rome and Moscow, but by that time France is a monster. Too big to stop and quickly takes Ruhr and other wealthy tts, while Brits are at the gates of Byzantium and then its over.

I think France is too rich or has too many troops to start with. Maybe they should at set up lose the troops they gain anyway from Belgium and Portugal.

What also could help is that you arent allowed to move to or from contested areas.

That sounds right, Von. It is true that the Turks moved all of their troops to Meso at a stand off with theBrits.

Maybe an alteration that it is not one move you can do but up to a max of, say, ten and to and from all kinds of tts, as long as you own them.

No, not really. Strategies were used where the opponent had to chose between multiple targets. And if not doing that then would lose out on loads of ipc.
One solution, if it does get out of hand, is to do the sm move BEFORE placing new units. But so far in our games there hasnt been a need to.

Yesterday i finished a game which lasted ten hours in total. We used the SM rule and the plus one from ports movement.
The allies did win, but were in much trouble throughout the game. I was the allies and am a way more experienced played then my opponent, but still it hang in the balance for the first eight rounds. Then Rome fell, but the Germans before that thought they had Russia on their knees and started sending their new troops to Paris. But it was one turn too soon and Russia with an income of only eight did fight back and got back into the game.
Austria did help by sending a large army back from Italy to Russia, but that army was needed to invade Southern France. Because that didnt happen the French could win back Belgium and invade Germany.

Even though the allies won again, this was the first time they were in trouble. And the first time they captured a capital. Tomorrow we re playing another game and then im the CP.

So far i love these new rules.

Me too! And by the looks of it this one is going to be amazing. The one thing i always hated about EU is the trading system. How many merchants got kicked out three days after being installed?
Well, that system is out and redone completely!

      Cant wait.

I think the biggest problem for the CP is that they chose for a strategy, namely Paris or Moscow, and can impossibly alter that after a couple of turns. And the allies see it coming from G1 so can act accordingly. With this drastic new rule the Germans can alter their plans if they need to and the fact the allies need to be alert on that means they have to always spend IPC in case the Germans decide to attack the west instead of east. With the plus one from capitals it doesnt change much, because troops from Poland cannot move fast to the other side.

And the mega large stacks moving around the board will perhaps happen every now and then. But I dont think we’ll see Germans moving 100 units to the west and the turn after that to the east. I think you’ll see it once, after Paris or Moscow has fallen.

      @Uncrustable:

      @Flashman:

We mustn’t disagree with Larry; we’re here to test his ideas, not come up with our own.

Personally, I think moving 2 spaces for all units might do the trick.

you say we’re here to test his ideas and not come up with our own and then share your own idea on the subject ftw…

      :-DI thought the same!

I think no one likes the sea movement of five. But most of us like the plus one from ports. Maybe lower cruiser to eight IPC and we are done on the naval side of the game.

I have onlyone game under my belt with the SM but liked it a lot. The CP stand more of a chance, while it also helps the allies.

The way I use the SM as follows:

Only move through your own provinces.
You can move from or to an area contested by your units, but you cannot move through a contested area. So you have to stop at the first contested area you encounter.

What happens is that the Germans and Austrians get the most out of this. But the others can use it as well. Very handy for hit and run tactics, or reinforcing critical areas.

I love this new rule and hope it will become official.

Today I played a game with my friend with the SMR. We altered the movement of ships by +1 if you leave from a friendly port.

It was a way more fun game. Chances shifted from him to me, but after six rounds, when time was up, we had to write everything down to play again another time. I never, ever did this btw. Never in all my 200+ games of an Axis and Allies game.

Rome s about to fall, France and Russia are holding their own, the British have no fleet and Turkey is setting foor in Africa while their main army is at a standoff with the British in Persia.

It helps the defender as well. Especially in cases where Moscow s surrounded and the Russian army can make a move on one of the German held provinces and then move everything back to defend Moscow. Same with Paris and Rome.

I love the rule and i think the port rule is enough to help the fleet gain movement while leaving the cruiser faster to keep its admavtage.

Thanks KH! Am glad that this is the case. Would be very weird otherwise. British Indian soldiers moving through Russian lands to fight Habsburgers in Galicia.

Well, once you have a chain from SA to Archangelsk, moving units between them is the least of the CP problems!

Only if it is allowed to use the infrastructure of other countries, right? I think that is not in the spirit of this rule. Only your own provinces can be used, I think.
