    • RE: Has anybody won as the Allies??

Im have played 4 games as the allies, against two different opponents. I have won three times (although one of those games was won with ridiculous lucky dice rolls) and the fourth time was a draw. Due to time we had to stop and everything was still open, no clear winner.

I think the allies must be very patient. The US fleet must play a game of threats and small gains. I mean always be in a position from where you can threaten several targets. So Japan must increase defenses all potential US targets. And as the US you should always get all the small island that you can. This severely limits Japanese flexibility.

But you can’t build an IC on HAW. And you can stall an attack by moving one inf to BC.

    • RE: Combat question

We always let the player pick a casualty immediatly, before the second die is rolled. And the attacker needs to throw for the lowest units first. So first the sub (1) , so it needs to be the DD and then the fighters (4).

    • RE: China too weak

I have played 6 games so far and in one of them China was completely conquered.
I always leave the fighter behind (of course) and place one or two new inf with it, to prevent a strafing attack. Admittedly, if the British fall, then China is in real trouble, with no allies to retake the BUrma road.
I never seen China being able to build art by the way.

Has anyone tried an invasion of Alaska, next turn land a lot of aircraft and more land units and then build a IC there?

    • RE: What if?

Maybe said before, but I am too lazy to read all posts.

When D-Day happened the war was already over. As a Dutch man I still am very glad it happened, otherwise the Netherlands, Belgium and France would have the same fate as Hungary or Poland.

I voted battle of Britain. No staging ground for US troops. No Atlantik Wall. Way less soldiers needed to protect the coast. But most importantly: MORALE! The boost to Germans, all resistance movements in France and other countries would have lowest morale possible, Russians fight alone, US not so eager to join the war, less British troops against Japan (or none at all, peace?) etc.

    • RE: Most Underrated WWII Leader

When I was in China (in 2000) I went to a major war museum in Beijing. They spoke of a national hero who was a regular foot soldier. He was on a sabotage mission against the Japanese (obviously). They were spotted by Japanese soldiers and they fled. They laid very quietly on a hilltop and one of the Jap soldiers used fire to drive them from the hills. One of the Chinese soldiers caught fire and knew that if he screamed or start running he would give up their whereabouts and all he did was stay quiet while he burned to death, to save his comrades.

There is probably a lot of propaganda in this story, but still I think this guy’s a hero.

Only now do I realize that the thread is about leaders and not heroes…. Still I don’t want to delete this. So on subject:

All people you can name here is probably not underrated. I think the general/admiral/officer we can’t think of is the most underrated.

    • RE: Which Soviet City?

Stalingrad was more important (oil fields), but I voted Leningrad, because if Leningrad was taken sooner, then the troops could be redeployed and Stalingrad was taken too (probably). And Leningrad was/is an important port in the Baltics.

    • RE: Addtions to Germany's 1939 military

And it is a big difference if those German ships are new (build in 1939, or something), because a lot of British ships were older then that.

    • RE: Choose your Leader

And the fact that his archenemy, Montgomory, only dared to attack while Rommel himself was in Bavaria, recovering from a desease (don’t know the English name for that desease…) says a lot!

Although with many historical flaws, I love Enemy at the Gates. I have seen it more then 10 times, I think.

    • RE: Japan: All air to hold off USA/ANZAC, Navy and Land forces to get UK

If US decides to build up in HAW seazone, your aircraft are useless for a complete round (or more). Because you can’t fight that seazone (6 spaces). As US player I would just sit tight, build up and move to Japan via a northern route. Or go to Indies via southern route (Australia). Or build up TR with loads of cargo to take out Carolines. For every fighter it costs Japan it costs an inf for US.

And I think it will be a very dull way to play, or am I mistaken?

    • RE: Why plane not on island can't scramble?

Yes. All territories surrounded by one sea zone and with an airbase can have their fighters scramble.

    • RE: UK/ANZAC T2 attack, and a question

As Japan I would always only attack UK/ANZAC if they attack me on UK2. I would consider it a gift and would throw all aircraft at any UK/ANZAC ships and territories.

But I see your point. I think it will only be a very good idea to attack on UK2 if UK and ANZAC have a very tempting target(s). Like seeing some poorly defended TR or small fleets. Or invade somewhere with the possibility of destroying Jap bombers. But as Japan I always see to it that I don’t leave my TR and bombers undefended.

    • RE: Is "scrambling" to powerful?

I like the idea of scrambling. I see it is very powerful, but also it makes the need for having aircraft bigger.
One thing one can consider is to have fighters use their attack value instead of defense value when scrambling. Or have every friendly destroyer support only one fighter for anti-sub warfare. That way you must buy more DD’s, otherwise a steady flow of subs will access Japanese waters.

    • RE: Disapointed

And have the right shape for Taiwan. I understand the difference in size between Japan and, say, Kamsjatka, because of importance (placement of units). But Taiwan isn’t big on the map and has a weird shape. Reminds me of AA50 where Copenhagen is neutral (like it belongs to Sweden).

    • RE: Kill USA First

Yep, the Dutch are always being invaded… But in Civ4 the Dutch are one of the best Civs to play! :-)

But this is getting to much off topic!

I think you could go and kill the US, but not without securing Australia, for example. You don’t want UK forces to be able to operate from ANZAC territory!

    • RE: I have a problem :D

That’s true. I was playing Japan and UK attacked me UK2. I could send almost all aircrafts to kill off Brits without having to worry about US fighting me in US3.

    • RE: Taking Western US

But it is written under the NO section of the rulebook…

And if you take the US west coast, isn’t the war won anyway? The fact that you gained 60 IPC as loot and the US lost that, plus they can’t produce there, even if they retake it, gives you such an advantage that you can easily take on Asia mainland.
