      @superbattleshipyamato I’ve considered this too, but I haven’t tried it since I’m afraid it would just mean Italy and Germany ganging up on helpless France while AH holds off the hordes from the east, waiting for reinforcements. The Ottomans and the UK need each other as arch nemeses, in my opinion.

      @colt45554 Tournament rules have really evened the game up with increased movement and other such shifts. I have found that Germany can sufficiently keep France busy in Belgium/Ruhr and AH can toss a few infantry a turn into Venice while together they hit the Russians with a combined force that forces capitulation (political collapse) by as early as turn 4 with good rolls. After this, the only possible thing keeping them from decimating Italy and then France is if the UK managed to take the Ottomans out of the game early and can contest what used to be the Russian territories.

    • Italy's Role in the Game

      I have two questions concerning Italy:

      First, I struggle to do really anything with Italy. If AH puts any money whatsoever into that front, Italy cannot do so much as win in Venice, really, spare super awesome rolling. With an economy able to only purchase 4 units per turn, I always lose more units per turn than I can make, and Rome is an easy target for AH by round 5 or 6 even if they went hard for Russia first. How do other people handle this? I’m considering making a house rule with convoy zones (perhaps a topic for another thread) that will increase Italy’s income by 1 or maybe 2 so they can purchase 5 infantry, a slight bonus. Any thoughts?

      Second, I have seen a few ideas thrown about concerning how Italy can be houseruled to join either side of the war, but I cannot think of a good way to do this without ruining the balance save a massive IPC and unit bonus for the Entente if Italy swings the other way. Any new developments in this area?

      @superbattleshipyamato I agree. I could see the benefit of invading Spain with OOB rules, since that does save the US a full two turns of transport time. I play tournament rules and simply drop my units off in Marseilles or Picardy unless I need to bring them somewhere more specific (such as a struggling Egypt or even Constantinople). Can’t say I’ve ever tried invading Spain, but I my interest is piqued.

      @superbattleshipyamato I have taken Switzerland a few times myself, but I am less eager to do so than I used to be since I am not always convinced that it is worth the effort to widen the French front when it widens my own at the same time, especially if I am trying to stall as I beat up on the Russians. Afghanistan though… I can’t say I’ve ever gone for it. I myself would rather have those units moving west toward Mesopotamia than diverted for 1 IPC, though if the Ottomans are already out of the game and your units are sitting there then I may.

      I rarely invade any strict neutrals. With the number of enemy units that appear based on the IPC value, each of them defending at 3, any neutral you attack will statistically not benefit you economically for 3 turns (assuming that the 0.500 hit ratio is applied to your infantry, which cost 3 IPCs). For example, if the Ottomans invade Greece, the 2 IPC value will put up 4 units defending at 3, meaning that you will statistically lose 2 attacking infantry. This 6 IPCs is equal to what you will earn from Greece over 3 turns.
      This combined with the reality that attacking neutrals puts your units out of position really makes the investment not worth in, IMO. Other than Persia as the UK, I usually don’t bother.

      If Russia sends its air force east, it will have virtually no counterattack ability if Germany leaves a juicy target. If Russia is purely on the defensive and staring at a German stack that trudges a space at a time toward Moscow, that is not only boring but could be played more strategically. Having those planes ready to pair with some artillery and whatever else to take out little valuable stacks of German units (if left out in the open) is a better use IMHO. Also their defense can prove very useful in some swingy battles (Moscow for sure and maybe even Leningrad, depending on what the Germans sent north.) So would it help in the east? Sure. Not sure its a price I’m willing to pay, though, unless Germany is going Sealion.

      I’d be curious to hear your thoughts from trying J1, J2, and J3 attacks to see which you prefer. I tend to prefer J2 since it gives Germany/Italy more time than a J1 but still allows Japan to be collecting 60 something IPCs by turn 3 if done well. However, I’d be interested to hear your thoughts!
