    • RE: Foreign amphibious reinforcement and bombardment

@SuperbattleshipYamato It is amphibious reinforcement, not amphibious attack. From page 17 of the rulebook:

“An amphibious assault takes place when you attack a hostile coastal territory (a territory bordering a sea zone) from an
adjacent sea zone by offloading units from transports into that territory (or make a joint attack with both offloading units
and other units from one or more adjacent territories). An amphibious reinforcement takes place when you move units to
a contested or friendly coastal territory from an adjacent sea zone by offloading units from transports into that territory.”

Then on page 22 it describes sea combat before amphibious assaults and says in a few places that BBs can only bombard with an assault.

If the territory is already contested, my understanding is that no artillery preemptive strikes or BB bombardments can take place, and it is treated as regular combat (if you choose to attack rather than reinforce, that is). I’m sure Krieghund will have a more official answer, but that is how I see it.

    • RE: Axis are underpowered.

I suspect that we can learn from both sides here. The benefits of a J1 and J2 DOW have been clearly and repeatedly examined by many well-established players. In that I agree with arthur-bomber-harris. However, I am curious to know (perhaps in a new thread so as to not be too far off topic) what squirecam’s thoughts are on why a J3 is the way to go. If we give up seeking new strategies and the willingness to learn, then we are sad Axis and Allies players indeed.

    • RE: The Afrika Korps

I am fascinated by this strategy, but I am running into the problem some people mentioned earlier in the thread: as Germany, I simply cannot be successful in diverting the resources I need to in the Middle East at the same time as staging a whalloping Barbarossa. In my (albeit limited so far) playtesting against myself (sub-optimal, but it’s what I have), Germany may get Leningrad, but by the end of round 5 or maybe 6 the eastern front looks like a stalemate if not Russians in Romania. If the German land units are sent south and investments are put into the navy, Russia is difficult not even to capture but to hold back. Anyone found a good way to handle this?

    • Getting Russia to Turn 5

I’m having an Entente problem. To specify, in @The_Good_Captain’s balanced version. His tweaks to the game have been phenomenal, and I highly recommend playing with his balance version. That being said, I have had many games now with few exceptions where Russian methodically falls on round 4, due either to an inevitable revolution or being captured. I’m hoping for feedback on how to give Russia a little more oomph, and here is how it usually plays out (I’ll even assume Russia has slightly better dice):

Round 1: AH purchases 6 inf. and a fighter, then takes Romania and has 32 inf. and 8 art. bordering Russia. Russia buys 6 inf. and a fighter, and stacks in Ukraine (a generally accepted “best practice” as I understand things) with 30 in. and 7 art. (the most you can have if you put every single inf. and all the art. in range, having taken out 6 for the balance version). Germany buys 9 inf. and a fighter, then frolics into Poland with its 12 inf., 6 art., and fighter from Berlin.

Round 2: AH attacks Ukraine, and while this is slightly uphill, it leaves both armies with comparable stacks: about 13 inf. and 7/8 art., plus the fighter for AH. AH also moves several units to border Ukraine, 4 inf. from Vienna into Galicia and 1 inf. and 1 art. from Serbia to Romania (even though it likely didn’t fall turn 1. On Russia’s turn, there are 2 options: either force a counter-attack in Ukraine that may even take a few AH artillery, or pull back and stack Moscow with ~40 units. Either way, Germany ends its second round with their Polish units either in Ukraine or Livonia, depending on what the Russians did.

That’s enough play-by-play. If Russia counters, Germany and Austria will attack the remaining force in Ukraine, and if Russia is fortunate enough to have any units left by their third turn, it is a token force at best, and Germany has 19 inf., at least 3 artillery, and potentially a second fighter in Poland; Livonia is inevitably theirs turn 3, which means you HAVE to stack on Moscow with your at most 20ish units. There is no way that I can see to avoid either AH or Germany having Ukraine and Livonia by the end of round 3, whether because the Russians spent their army in a productive counter-attack or because they pulled back. But the Austrians sometimes squeak by with enough units in Ukraine to contest Moscow at the beginning of turn 4, meaning the game is over for Russia unless Germany can capture easily and ignores the armistice. That, however, is assuming the Russians lasted in Ukraine at all into their third round.

The other option is to turtle in Moscow on turn 2 with your 40ish units. This appears nice at first, but quickly deteriorates. Germany in round 2 or AH in round 3 takes Ukraine with ease, and Germany moves into Livonia with all or nearly all of their Polish units. Moscow cannot afford to meaningfully counter either of these armies, since, if they do, they will be open to the CP making Moscow a contested zone in round 3. Germany could even attack Moscow in round 3, likely losing all units but allowing AH to have a slightly easier time contesting in round 4, paving the way for the armistice.

Any thoughts? Am I misrepresenting anything or figuring wrong? I am hoping for minds more creative than my own to help me make Russia even just a little less mechanical.

    • RE: Countering J1 with USSR?

If Russia sends its air force east, it will have virtually no counterattack ability if Germany leaves a juicy target. If Russia is purely on the defensive and staring at a German stack that trudges a space at a time toward Moscow, that is not only boring but could be played more strategically. Having those planes ready to pair with some artillery and whatever else to take out little valuable stacks of German units (if left out in the open) is a better use IMHO. Also their defense can prove very useful in some swingy battles (Moscow for sure and maybe even Leningrad, depending on what the Germans sent north.) So would it help in the east? Sure. Not sure its a price I’m willing to pay, though, unless Germany is going Sealion.

    • RE: How to deal with the insane russian NO

@shadowhawk First of all, Russia never just walks into Italian Africa, and if they take Iraq (the only pro-axis territory one could consider easy for them), that is only a net of 5 IPCs. If Russia is spending resources getting down to Africa, I would as the Axis welcome their little escapade as it will take them many turns to get there and weaken their defenses a little.

That said, I know that the 3 IPC NO can be a huge boon if Russia has 2-3 territories (perhaps, Iraq, Finland, Romania, etc), but if they are making big money on this then it is likely that the game is practically over anyway. The way I see it, this NO is just incentive for Russia to consider moving into Finland and making Germany sweat a little, but even doing that will essentially hand over Leningrad if you empty it for the offensive.

I don’t see it as being wildly unbalanced due to the difficulty of getting onto original German territory.

I did a battle in Egypt to “simulate” if the Americans would have taken it last turn if I had adhered to the rules. I went with those results and edited my British units to Transjordan as if that had been the case.

@The_Good_Captain Appreciate the thought. Usually I send 18 inf. to Romania so I have a few more. This enables Italy to consider being mean, and on occasion I pay for it, but I like sometimes to gamble that for the sake of a little extra manpower in Ukraine. I’ll give your suggestion a try!

@colonel-ace AAA guns are always welcome in China, but what I have a hard time buying is China taking back the road after retreating. If they simply retreat, that means Japan has lost few if any land units, and China will have no more than 3 artillery with which to attack an intact stack of Japanese land units which may or may not have 8+ planes stacked on top, depending on when they took the territory. China does better on defense than offense, and if the strategy is to retreat and take back land, I fear that China is doomed. The benefit of those 3 guns will be vastly outweighed by a large Japanese land army.

Enough doom and gloom. I agree with you that you want AAA in China, but the quickest way to do that is to send a gun or so up from India (unless Japan is going Calcutta Crush). As Russia, if you really want to help, send in a few fast movers like mechanized inf. to aid in a multinational stack, preferably in Yunnan if you can manage it. Buying and sending slow AAA from Russia will be too little too late, especially if China has done nothing but retreat.

@The_Good_Captain The turn posted below and the dice you received are not accurate. I too had some weird computer issue and my game closed. I went through Italy and the US turns making sure the board looked the exact same as when I asked you about casualties. Ignore the emails you got and go by the picture I sent, essentially.

@The_Good_Captain @King_Of_Tanks Well said, TGC. I am always glad to discuss the game with people who are willing to openly and amicably do so, and I appreciate everyone here who is both friendly and experienced. And I’ll echo the last post and say that I am glad this thread was brought up as well (I hope my initial skepticism wasn’t taken as cavalier dismissal; I am genuinely intrigued). I also will be open to a game later on, starting in mid-November.

    • RE: France's role in Global 1940 SE

@The-Janus In my experience, if the Allies have consistent control of Paris (long enough for France to consider purchases), the game is essentially over. If Germany is weak enough that Paris is taken and held, then France’s economy really doesn’t need a boost, IMHO. I get that it is more fun to buy expensive units, but it simply would be kicking Germany while it is down.

That said, if you have a good European game as the Allies but a crappy situation in the Pacific, maybe something can be considered, but the French really cannot do much about the Pacific.

@SuperbattleshipYamato I had the easier side and a few superb dice rolls to hep me. Despite those realities, he still made it very difficult.
