      Mr “ABWorsham”,

I think that’s a really fine pic of your granddad in his WW1 uniform.  Are you named after him(the 3rd) or is your A&A.ORG handle in his honor?

By the way, you’re info lists you as located in East Texas.  Would that be anywhere close to the Longview, TX area?  It would be nice to have a new player in our games if so.  Also, my Dad and friends play in Shreveport, LA, just down the road.    Tall Paul

    • RE: Old photos of WW2

My Dad, Clifton W. Harwell, was in WW2.  He will be 87 next month and still works every day at his job!  He runs his own small business, Harwell Printing Company and has done so since 1956.  He was an enemy artillery spotter using the “sound and flash” system to call in counter-battery fire against the Germans in the European Theatre of Operations.  His unit was the –-(temporarily forgotten the #) FOB, standing for Field Observation Batallion in the 15th Corps, assigned the Patton’s 3rd Army.  He is a big (read BIG) Patton fan and saw the General on three different occasions.  He saw a lot and has at least a hundred fascinating “war stories”.

Years ago, my Dad he agreed to go see “Saving Private Ryan” with me,…and to tell the truth after the movie was over I could see he was dealing with some 'memories" of his service.  He started talking them out and then wrote one down as an article in the country newspaper he edits and prints.  He received a lot of good feedback from his readership and was encouraged by them to write some more articles.  As he did so he not only ended up with a book’s worth of memories but it really helped him to deal with these experiences and get past them.

I am obviously very proud of my Dad and his service.  I have several dozen pics of him in the Army that I’ve had digitized and put on a CD.  I would be very happy to share some or all of them with everyone in this forum if you can explain to me how to do it..

By the way, we started playing Axis & Allies back in the 1980’s and about 8-9 months ago started playing the A&A 1940-Global version with a huge map, 48" x 108" professionally enlarged for us.  I ask you,…how cool is it to play Axis & Allies with a real life WW2 vet?                      Tall Paul

    • RE: Oil tankers sunk

I want to point out the great contribution of the American railroads in counterring the effects of “operation drumbeat” and the German anti-shipping campaign by their subs.  At the time of WW2 most railroad tank cars were of 8,000 to 10,000 gallon capacity.  Between the time of the first sub attacks and the building of the two pipelines all the way from the oil sources in Texas to the NorthEast coast, the railroads hauled solid “tank trains” of up to 100+ tank cars in a very expeditious manner and basically “saved our bacon”.  I’d be more than happy to discuss any railroad history anytime.  Thanks,  “Tall Paul”

    • RE: Battle of Savo Island

As far as the Marines being “pulled out” of Guadalcanal I think I should point out that the Comanding General of the 1st Marine Division, A. A. Vandegrift, in his autobiography “Once a Marine” states that he instructed his Operations Officer to make a plan for “fighting in the hills” (guerilla warfare).  This is verified by his Operations Officer’s book “No bended knee, the battle for Guadalcanal” by Gen. Merrill B. Twining.  Twining states that Vandegrift was at his lowest ebb in fatigue when he ordered him to make this plan and this probably had some impact on his judgement.

Personally, I believe that once the Marines were committed to this first ever offensive operation in WW2 that the U.S. would find the ways to support it, as we have seen from FDR’s commitment that turned the tide for the Marines, including support from the U.S. Army’s Americal Division.  The Americal Division’s CG, Maj. Gen. Alexander M. Patch, originally sent a message to Gen. Vandegrift stating that “my division will be unable to participate in the upcoming operation because we have not yet had any training in amphibious warfare”.  Vandegrift wrote that “From the beginning it had been clear that the Army strongly opposed the plan”.

I have read probably close to a hundred books associated with the Guadalcanal operations, from several different aspects.  I think that once Admiral King had pressured the Joint Chiefs of Staff to go ahead with the invasion that several American commanders like Adm. John McCain as ComAirSoPac, realized that “Cactus(Guadalcanal) can be a sinkhole for enemy air power” as stated in the book “A Leader Born” by Alton Gilbert.

    • RE: War Leaders: Clash of Nations

      Hey there and Thanks,

This looks like a computer game with a lot of promise!  I didn’t find any “bugs” when I checked it out.  I’ll have to look at my local Target and other spots to buy myself a copy.  I’ll let you know when I find it and how I liked it.  Thanks again for the info.          Tall Paul

    • RE: Accurate Miniature Equivalents for Custom Painting your 1940 E&P

      Hello,
Does anyone know when Chad Coffman, a.k.a. “allworkandnoclay” will be back in touch with this forum?  I have sent him an e-mail about purchasing several of his awesome painted units but as of yet haven’t gotten any reply.  Through following this forum I know he sometimes goes off on extended vacations to exotic places and I can only guess that is the case now.  Thanks for anyones help.    Tall Paul

    • Shreveport, LA area: Looking for A&A 1940 Global game

Looking for new/additional players/friends to enjoy games of A&A 1940-Global.  I’ve had the mapboard professionally enlarged 150% until it now is 4’ x 9’.  It is a LOT easier now to fit everything onto the map as well as looking pretty cool.  I’m originally from Shreveport, LA,…but now live in the Longview, TX area.  I try to visit family/friends in Shreveport weekly when possible.  If you’re interested in a fun game with some new friends in the Shreveport area please send me an e-mail.
My e-mail address is:        theshreveporter@yahoo.com        Thanks,  “Tall Paul”
