      Grasshopper and Others,

      ––And here’s a pic of an Air Base on an out-of-the-box size gameboard.
      NOTE: I almost always play my A&A games on a much enlarged (150%) gameboard,….which makes the “footprint” of these Airbases MUCH SMALLER!
      ––I also have a few pics of the Naval Bases if you want to see them…

      @Young:

      Do you have more pics Tall Paul?

      ––Yes, a few hundred. But I’d probably bore you if I showed them all to you.
      Since John showed you the Air Base without any paint I’ll show you mine with paint,…although without the white stripes down the middle of their runways. Although the pics are a little “fuzzy”, if you look real hard you can see that the control towers have been painted with multiple windows on each side of them. Remember,….these are really SMALL units! These close-up profile pics show just where the runways were trimmed,…approx. 1/16" past the control tower, in order to visually separate the views as well as strengthen the tower area.

      @jwo1984:

      Tall Paul,

      Do you have any of his units painted and in your stock? if so could you share some pictures?  Im really interested in making the shapeways jump.  Also, what units did you yourself order for your games, and do you have any other scale recommendations? particularly the carriers, as I have all the HBG expansion set and supplement set carrier pieces, but find them a tad too small, particularly for tactical bombers on the decks.

      thanks
      ––JWO1984 & others,
      ----First,…let me say that although I already have the CAPITALS set by Ebard, I will definately buy the CAPITAL & VICTORY CITY set which this thread is about whenever they are finished and available as I think they are completely different.
      ––Second, So as not to “hi-jack” this thread, let me just list some “links” to threads which discuss the topics you inquired about and already have the pics posted;

      jwo1984 & Others,

      ––This thread shows how the Shipyard was made by Ebard re-designing his Dry Dock, adding a large wharf area, adding a second crane, several warehouses, storerooms, and supplies to the dock area including some pics of the finished painted units. Guys,

      @EBard519:

      I don’t want to hijack the thread but I’ll just briefly mention that I can customize my Shapeways pieces upon request. If there is interest in larger or wider versions of any of my models, such as the carriers, just shoot me a message here or preferably on Shapeways and I’d be happy to give it a go! Just let me know the dimensions or scale that you want. I’m also happy to create magnet friendly versions of my carriers if there is interest in that; I presume all that would be needed is a certain diameter and depth hole on the flight deck?

      Thanks,
      EBard

      ––As I have orderred dozens of Ebard’s designs let me say that I am COMPLETELY SATISFIED with his designs and find them to be EXTREMELY DETAILED. I say this with the understanding that I have always orderred my units to be produced in FROSTED ULTRA DETAIL plastic. In SHAPEWAY units, as in life, you get what you pay for.

      ––Also, there have been several of his designs that I wanted, but they were in the wrong size (proportion) for my use in A&A gaming. I simply sent him an IM on the SHAPEWAYS site asking him if he would re-design them in the size I wanted and he did so rather quickly. It was 1/700 Fighter aircraft re-designed to 1/500.

      ----On another occasion, I noticed he had a design for a “Drydock” and I mentioned to him that if he would completely re-design it into a “Shipyard” and offer it in a group of nine units it would be useful to any gamers in HBG’s GW-1939 game. He did so and I bought them (pics below).

      ––In summation, his designs are well detailed, and he has hundreds of designs already done, is a nice guy and is willing to “work with you” in re-designing units to the size you want. 5 STARS!
      THANK YOU Ebard!

      @jwo1984:

      @LHoffman:

      @toblerone77:

      Just a question for HBG. Is HBG moving more towards 3D printing rather than plastic injection molding in it’s product line?  If so are you move toward more frequent smaller 3D, rather than larger and less frequent injection molded set? Or will you begin going more toward larger more frequent 3D sets ?

      As far as 3D printing has come, it still seems like plastic injection still has better overall quality. The 3D pieces look coarse. Almost pixelated in 3D form.

      You can easily see in these photos:

      http://www.historicalboardgaming.com/Going-Nuclear-Expansion-Set-B-29-Atom-Bomb-markers_p_1880.html
      http://www.historicalboardgaming.com/Me-323-Gigant-3D-Printed-Aircraft-Set_p_1881.html
      http://www.historicalboardgaming.com/H-44-German-Super-Battleship-Set-3d-Printed_p_1981.html

      The detail seems to be much better than OOB and as good as HBG pieces injection molding, however it is the surface texture (as a painter) that concerns me.

      Here is one of Tall Paul’s APD destroyer/transports from another thread. They are 3D printed from Shapeways and you can really see the surface texture in this hi-res photo. Granted, it may not be quite as visible at distance, but it is pretty apparent to me. Looks like it was eaten by acid.
      http://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?topic=26127.msg1287679#msg1287679

      I guess this means I am voting to continue major set production with injection molding until 3D printing can be done with greater resolution, as it were. That is… if I had a vote.  :roll:

      ––JWO & others,
      I feel that I should explain a few things in order that everyone understands about 3D printing from SHAPEWAYS.
      ----YES, the APD destroyer transport ended up looking like it was dipped in an acid bath! But that’s simply because after 5 different paint colors a dull coat finish was applied and that is what unfortunately caused the unfortunate “acid bath” look,…not the quality of the unit beforehand.
      Before the APD was painted it was UNBELIEVABLY DETAILED. It was our painting mistake that messed it up.
      ----I can’t stress this point enough. When orderring units from SHAPEWAYS you basically get what you pay for! If you want high-quality, unbelievably detailed units, you must order them in F.U.D. (Frosted Ultra Detail) plastic. Yes, they cost more in F.U.D., about $2.00-$3.00 each usually.
      ––If you want to only pay .50 each for the units, YES, you will get a much less detailed unit with rough surfaces and sometimes a “pock mark” or “washbord” look. Like I said,…you get what you pay for as far as quality terms.
      ----I think that if everyone on this forum that has ever orderred anything from SHAPEWAYS voiced their opinions they would agree with the above formula:
      units orderred in FROSTED ULTRA DETAIL plastic are awesomely detailed, but WORTH THE EXTRA COST if you want nice looking units! I know that everything that I’ve orderred, from whatever designer, that was produced in F.U.D. I have been totally pleased with!

      ––And if you find something you like,…but it’s in the wrong size (proportion/scale), almost all of the designers will re-draw the unit in the scale you want. I can’t tell you how many times a designer re-drew and aircraft from 1/700 to 1/500 for me. It’s simply a matter of time for the designer.

      Tall Paul

      I totally agree with you Hoffman…and am in the same boat.  These 3D pieces do look coarse in texture…and tall paul’s destroyer…well painted…but up close looks like it was sunken and under the sea with coral for years! Im on the fence…i like the variety of units, but I dry brush all my pieces and these textures would pick up all the highlights in the wrong way.  Wasn’t there something on shapeways… about two different types of plastic finishes you can order for the piece? with quite a difference in cost?

      jwo1984 and others,

      @jwo1984:

      These capitals are very cool! Makes me really want too consider investing in a large scale map
      ––Thanks, I’m glad to enjoyed them. I’m even more happy that they may have INSPIRED you to consider the possibility of a “large scale” map.
      ……so many more options you can add to the experience of AA!
      ––IMHO the money I spent on a “large scale” map was not only the BEST A&A investment I’ve ever made,….
      but also gave me the “Best bang for the Buck” as far as FUN received for money spent. Let me explain:

      –The BEAUTY of a well done “large scale” map is obvious.
      –With everything being spread out it makes things EASIER as far as planning strategy/tactics for all players.
      –Also, I’ve found that the game goes FASTER because each player can see & plan their moves quicker.
      –And another “bonus” is that it’s LESS STRESSFUL because everyone isn’t afraid of making the dreaded mistake of mixing up units that are too close to each other, especially in Europe at the start of the game.
      –With everything spread out and easier to see allows the game to be more ADAPTABLE as far as using addition NEW UNIT or FACILITY TYPES .
