      @CWO:

      He was definitely a lucky fellow.  There was another A-bomb test back in those days which included an exercise by US tank and mechanized infantry units to test out the concept of armoured forces exploiting a breach in a simulated enemy line created by the use of a tactical nuclear weapon.  The exercise, as I recall, is mentioned in Richard M. Ogorkiewicz’s book Technology of Tanks, and I think the armoured force in question was designated Task Force Razor.

      I shudder to think of the price paid by our service personnel back then. In the same vein, another winning idea from the era was the “Davy Crockett atomic mortar” (actually a recoilless rifle):

      https://armyhistory.org/the-m28m29-davy-crockett-nuclear-weapon-system/

      The Davy Crockett’s chief shortcoming was its inability to hurl the nuclear projectile far enough to ensure the gun crew didn’t fall victim to their own weapon. Key takeaway from the article:

      “Since the warhead also posed a threat to the crew firing it, the Army recommended that soldiers manning the Davy Crockett select firing positions in sheltered locations, such as the rear slope of a hill.  Soldiers were also encouraged to keep their heads down to protect themselves from the warhead’s detonation.”

      Not mentioned in the article is a quote from a soldier who served on a Davy Crockett crew, which I heard years ago. He said the most valuable piece of equipment in that weapon system was an e-tool, used by the crew to dig foxholes in the event they had to fire the weapon.

      @Caesar:

      @Gargantua:

      In this scenario I think a lot would depend on what happens in the east.  Not so much the west.

      The Americans had the nuke, had the pacific on lockdown and had the capability to strategically bomb and invade a superpower via the pacific alone.  With Japan broken or at peace with the allies, this mean a us invasion of mainland Asia could have been conducted.

      Mind you, there wasnt much to invade in the Soviet Far East., but all the same.  Russia would be fighting a two front war with no lend lease as mentioned, against a swath of allied nations.

      I doubt they’re would be a reason to land in China, US wanted to liberate China but the ROC couldn’t secure a deep water port. So if US had to land invade USSR from the east, they would have to bypass Japan and most likely would take out Japan first or go into USSR east thus forcing the USN to destroy the Red Pacific Fleet.

      Depending on when the West decides to take on the Soviets, destroying the Red Pacific Fleet might have consisted of sinking ships the US had sent to Russia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Hula (“Project Hula was a program of World War II in which the United States transferred naval vessels to the Soviet Union in anticipation of the Soviets eventually joining the war against Japan, specifically in preparation for planned Soviet invasions of southern Sakhalin and the Kuril islands. Based at Cold Bay in the Territory of Alaska, the project was active during the spring and summer of 1945. It was the largest and most ambitious transfer program of World War II.”)

      Keep in mind that there’s a big jump from the part about the spy not getting caught to the part about Germany developing an atomic bomb.  Knowing how to build such a bomb is the easy part; the hard part (as General Veers has noted) is assembling the raw materials, specifically a sufficent quantity of weapons-grade fissile materials (uranium 235 or plutonium).  The US set up a gigantic industrial infratructure (such as enormous gaseous diffusion plant at, as I recall, Oak Ridge) for that purpose, on a scale far beyond anything Germany attempted, and over the course of the war it only produced enough materials for three bombs.

      @simon33:

      Interesting. I can duplicate the problem if I do the CM in three steps. If you ctrl-click to go from SZ36 to SZ43 via SZ35 in one go, Triple-A allows it.

      … and my recreated scenario allowed the moves in two steps, too (see attached file) …

      … and I can confirm simon33’s observation that Snigg’s scenario would work in two steps, too, by moving from 36 to 44 via 35 as step 1 - then load - then move from 44 to 35 as step 2.

      @Narvik:

      @Herr:

      It’s very unlikely of course that the whole enterprise would have been started without firm support in England itself,

      I think you are on to something here, man. If you want to amphibious assault a developed and industrialized country that is defended by an organized military force, then you need to expect some support in that country.
      {snip}
      Now, could AH expect any support by locals in UK if he did pull the Sea Lion ? I dont think so, and that why it was never done

      There was a group of proto-Quisling wanna-bes called the British Union of Fascists (BUF). The difference between Norway and the UK was that after the war really started going in 1940, the UK government squashed the BUF like a BUG (“In May 1940, the BUF was banned outright by the government and (BUF leader) Mosley, along with 740 other fascists, was interned for much of the Second World War.” - Wikipedia). So, by the time France surrendered, the BUF was no longer a going concern and could not have been used to help the Wehrmacht fight the Brits.

      Doubtful. The only two ways I see the war ending without the US are:

      1940. Holland, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, and Poland, of course, have been conquered. Britain and France (Chamberlain is the PM at this point), sue for peace. Britain and France have to pay reparations (especially heavy reparations for France), and hand over various colonies. Plus, they have to recognize Hitler’s conquests in Europe. Possibly, the French would have to hand back Alsace- Lorraine as well. Hitler would most likely consider this to be avenging the Versailles Treaty. This results in Britain and France becoming second to Germany, but still powers to be reckoned with. Chamberlain wanted peace, so he may have grudgingly accepted Nazi occupied Norway and Holland (unlikely), and the French were desperate to save their homeland. Neither would fight alone, so they’d accept peace. Hitler would then attack the USSR, possibly with Anglo-French support.

      Mid-late 1940s.

      Sealion has not taken place, and the Germans have attacked the USSR. They wear each other out, but the USSR has a nearly limitless supply of men and resources. It would have been much bloodier, but eventually, the Russians would’ve gotten the upper hand, and the war would play out as it did- except that since the US never got involved in D-Day, the British were too weak to open up a second front, so most of Europe would’ve been liberated by the Russians, and therefore fallen into the Soviet bloc after the war. In fact, NATO and the Western bloc may not have existed at all, since Britain’s voice would have counted for far less in the post-war world, and Stalin would control Europe, effectively.

      Hi Kris. Over the years I have had this error message a number of times. It has always been due to incorrect play by forum log in details. These can suddenly disappear altogether or be replaced by the details of another player, for no apparent reason.

      Of course variance has already given this answer and you have attempted to address such a problem, but I thought it might help if I emphasised the same cause.

      I should add that the simple work around of posting a reply with the game file attached will overcome this problem. This is the same approach as I have highlighted for overcoming 301 too, until such time as you have that fixed.

      Even after the fix you will need to use this approach for 1.8 games anyway, as the 301 fix only works for 1.9 and games started in 1.8 cannot be switched to 1.9. As I said in a previous attempt to help you need to be clear whether you are using 1.8 or 1.9.

      Which means there is no reason to delay 1.8 or 1.9 games while you apply the 301 fix for 1.9, or struggle with this refresher heading error. Just continue by posting a reply with the game file attached.

      As I have said this before I imagine you need a helping hand on how to attach a game file to a post?  If so do just ask.
