      @Gorshak Yeah, did not anticipate the air attack in Northern Caucasus. Or see that the Queensland fighter could land on the CV from SZ 66. A worthwhile sacrifice by the Americans to keep their ANZAC comrades from certain destruction.

      @CraigViau

      Hi Craig, you are correct that there is another game that the Balanced Mod uses for its baseline objectives, that would be Global 1940 so you were starting in a good spot on your search. And I’m not sure there is a handy comprehensive list of the National Objectives listed on the rules since they used Balanced mod to build off of.

      However I quickly summarized them here, let us know if you have more questions!

      @Gorshak True, but looking ahead, I do not see a route to anything other than prolonging my defeat.

      For Japan- Sniping those 3 transports makes it so I cannot land in Queensland and hope to it this round. Reinforcements are 2 turns away if I try.

      UK’s air force makes holding Burma this round also highly unlikely, I would need to build an airbase to scramble defenders. Even if I hold it, India will be unassailable for 2 more rounds, depending on buys.

      The opening moves against USSR were a gambit I thought might serve to make it easier on Germany to take Stalingrad and Caucasus, but my follow-through with Germany was poor.

    • RE: League General Discussion Thread

      A tangent here, I have been thinking how bids factor into games. Playing a game as a new player, against an M- or E-ranked player, there should be a way to make an allowance for a larger bid for the lower-ranked player palatable. It currently is not in those players’ interest from a PPG standpoint, as Mr Roboto has pointed out; bid has no impact on the points scored in the game, and winning against a Tier 3 opponent will bring down your PPG average if it is over 4.

      Perhaps there is a solution, where we use the terms/bid and “current” player ranking at the start of the game to determine the points the game will award to each player upon completion?

      For example, in PtV the average bid is ~Axis +9. If an E-ranked player instead grants the Tier 3 opponent an increased bid of +18, perhaps a victory over that opponent should then result in 5 points instead of 4.

    • RE: Japan is unstoppable, even when the US goes Japan first in 1941 Anniversary Scenario

      To be fair, in the example given you do not hold India. I do not consider “Japan first” as a strategy that works in Anniversary edition. Japan starts with 9 Fighters, 3 Carriers, a Battleship, and will have most of that left after turn 1.

      At a minimum Japan will probably have a fleet with:
      6 Ftr, 1 CV, 1 BB, 1 CA. Add in a DD for ASW on round 2/3 when USA starts buying subs for the Pacific.
      Offensive power 30 Defensive 39

      To match the combat power offensively against their fleet, while having defense proof against their attack, America needs to spend two rounds of buys (again, just to be able to move off SZ 56). Something like 1 BB, 2 CV, 1 Ftr, 5 subs.

      74 IPCs to let you move out, without any transports to capture territories, while Japan and Germany are ground-pounding China and the USSR sucking IPCs out of your Allies’ economy. Or instead you unplug from the Pacific, scoot your carrier group to the Atlantic, build transports, another carrier round 1, and are contesting North Africa by round 3 at the latest. Any fleet units Germany buys are doomed (eventually) and taking IPCs away from the fight for Russia.

      @cloud7707 Max defense but how many hits you get in the first round will matter. If only 2, remove 1 carrier and 1 fighter. If more than 2 remove both carriers

      Not attacking G4 is probably unwise, unless you have been completely focusing elsewhere, Russia can DOW on R4 if they choose (and why wouldn’t they)

    • RE: The new ELO-based ranking system

      @MrRoboto Thanks for the detailed post, I don’t have much input at this time but love the presentation!

      as @Martin pointed out, an annual or lower per month might be a better spot for decay if implemented. 3% would take someone at 2400 ELO down to a 2126 after a full year of inactivity, probably okay. 5% would be 1765 which feels quite low for taking a break. I know the floor would be 1500. Maybe 3% or at least no more than 5% in my opinion :)

    • RE: Units, Mechanics, etc.

      @The-Janus

      A little feedback for you. I think you tried to do too much on round 1. Your forces are very thin. Only an 82% chance to win France? You don’t need to capture Normandy or Southern France on round 1. The extra 2, 3 IPCs isn’t worth how many extra units you can lose because of the narrower advantage in all the locations. As an example, if you hit France with all of those units instead you lose on average 7 infantry. Instead your average outcome between those 3 battles with your setup losses 5 infantry, 2 mech, 3 artillery.

      Also spreading those attacks leaves the British fleet in 110 alive, which means he can start building transports and attacking Normandy/Holland for a big boost in income and keeping a lot of resources facing West. Without a bid you should be absolutely murdering both British fleets with your air and navy.

      G1 attack on Russia can be good, but you have to be very committed to it. Otherwise G2 is much better. It’s a swing of 10 IPCs from the NOs, so you want to be in position to block SZ 125 when you do attack. Failing to take Eastern Poland is something that can happen, but we also try to do the Yugoslavia “bump” attacking and retreating so you have that stack of infantry and artillery from GSG into Romania in 1 turn instead of 2. You want to push South.

      You left Bulgaria for Italy. This isn’t always a bad move, but I do consider it a bad move when doing G1 Russia. You want those extra ground units to control the southern Russian front and push past Bryansk.

      Looks like you let the AI control Italy, you should be playing both of them. Italy is incredibly useful to help Germany blitz on the Eastern front. Another reason to wait until G2 to attack is that you can get 2 tanks into position to can-open for Germany if Russia has a weak stack hidden behind a single infantry. Don’t give Italy Ukraine, even if Russia leaves it open. You want that free IC for Germany.

      Generally top-League players don’t buy tanks. Mechs are so efficient that the extra attack power from tanks is overrated. You want mechs and air basically from round 2 if you are pushing Moscow hard.

    • RE: Units, Mechanics, etc.

      Also to your question about the strategic bombers, they serve two primary roles for Germany:

      1. Giving a large threat range where the Allies must protect their fleet, especially transport flotillas;
      2. Strategic bombing of Moscow

      Strategic bombing of London is also useful, but early damage in Moscow before it gets stocked with Allied (UK typically) fighters can pay serious dividends.

      Generally I feel Europe OOB needs an Allied bid, which is usually going to to go to the UK since they are the only power that start at war with the Axis. So handicapping them is harder, and Sealion is typically not an appealing trade-off against skilled opponents.
