    • RE: Deutschland uber Zombes: German AAZ Strategy Discussion

      I’m curious to how japan will play out in the long run.  I play a game as Japan in the early turns and I never got anywhere quick.  The money islands aren’t even an easy pickup because you can’t just land 1-2 ground and be confident of winning against both the defenders AND their zombies.  Took till turn 5 to conquer china because in east asia all the infantry focus means you essentially have to kill everything twice.

      I may have had a hard time because the allied player focused a lot on japan, however this left Russia to get munched up by my german ally who lucked out with chainsaw tanks as an early research pickup and proceeded to spam nearly zombieproof immune tanks that took out the Russians.  Technology can certainly swing things in this game.

      At a minimum, it seems easy to stall japan with the recruitment centers + australia IC.  Unlike some other versions, this seems to be one where allies have every opportunity to focus japan and try a KJF but the question is how much can afford not to spend aiding Russia against Germany.(This is a good conundrum!) In some other versions no matter how determined the british player is he will be ousted from asia, but I feel in this version the brits could hold onto a foothold if they spend enough IPCs on it.

      We are going to need an errata on the 1942 setup.  The American setup has no navy and lists infantry in seazones -_-.  Also not sure if West US and Hawaii losing a fighter each is an intended balance change.

    • RE: AAZ Tournament Rules brainstorming

      As an FYI, earliar statements on the OOB rules having an individual winner in case of apocalypse turned out to be wrong.  It is the “side” that wins in that case.  Having an individual winner would be a tournament house rule.

      @DoManMacgee:

      Honestly I think the Recruitment Centers are going to be the one thing from this game that breathes new life into the franchise, especially if they become purchase-able in future editions as cheaper ICs.

      That certainly seems hinted in the rulebook.  Looking at the rules for porting zombies to 1942, you can buy recruitment centers for 10ipcs AND one of the chinese territories starts with one. In fact, I’m interested in using the ported setup(Edit: As soon as they errata the American scuba soldiers out!) as a zombieless “patched” setup for the current 1942.  Tougher china, british navy/australia may be a positive change.

      The game is not for everyone.  No game ever is. I see it’s purpose as an entry level game to grab a wider audience in a dwindling player base.

      Of course, there are always going to be people like…

    • RE: The Rules of Axis & Allies & Zombies

      @Caesar:

      The Zombie Apocalype trigger is way different than you think. Each nation fights for itself and the nation with the most ICP without a zombie in it wins.

      If that is the case , it might as well read “In case of apocalypse, America wins.” instead of the likely allied victory as a whole. (Continental America alone is worth 1 IPC less then entirety of starting german territory.  Britan and Russia have a snowballs chance in hell.  Even if Japan conquers the majority of pacific territories from US and Britian it STILL makes less then what America would be making.  A particularly successful Germany has the only other chance.)

      While I’m very much ok with the zombie theme of this game to use as an introduction to A&A for my less historical gaming orientated friends and think it could have been fun in that regard, I’m sighing at victory conditions which have noteable faults that a regular player can point out in a few minutes.

      Of course, untill the game is played a bunch this is not concrete, but I will be quite surprised if these predictions prove false.

      Yeah, i thought A&A was trying to move away from the JTDM more and more each edition.  Moscow falling=axis victory all but guarentees this to be the optimal strat for serious minded axis players and yet again the pacific will be ignored.   I’ll likely houserule VCs back in or require another capital besides moscow.

      Sounds like the Rulebook is (at least close to) finalized.  Any chance of the rules pdf being released publicly before October for a sneakpeak?

      Saw another photo on Facebook of the board.  Clear view of the IPCs, US definately makes some bank, i’d worry it overly much so if you dont play with the mentioned time limit.  Looks like infantry production in India but a straight up factory in australia?  Also infantry production in china.  Certainly a lot of ways to pressure japan early.  With the ways Zombies work I’m wondering if the game will have a “rubber band effect”.  May be hard for a player on the offensive to keep making gains.  Also interested in trying Russia or Germany in this game and trying “strategic zombification” of forces at hotspots.

    • RE: A&A WWI 1914 Abattlemap Module has begun!

      Neat!
      I had an earlier ambition of attempting my own 1914 module.  I only finished the bigpieces.bmp.  I’ve uploaded it for those who’d like an alternative.  The differences are it uses the boardgame colors for units and has damaged battleship markers.

    • RE: Yet another 1914 game report

      @Flashman:

      If the CPs decline the armistice, does the revolution nevertheless occur and, for example, make Russian controlled territory off limits to the other Allies?

      Does Russia still get a turn to fight off the Central Powers?

      Or does the Revoluiton, in this case, have no effect on the game?

      @Krieghund:

      Not to hijack this thread, but we’re thinking about changing the Russian Revolution rule to allow the Central Powers to decline the armistice if they want to.  That would keep Russia from “gaming” the rule.  Of course, there is only one revolution, so accepting it is a one-time opportunity.

      I’m almost positive it probably means “No revolution happens”

      A thousand times yes on making that ruling official though.  Destroys gaminess without complicating things further.  Forces Russia to play like it wants to survive instead of “How can I self destruct for the most damage”.

    • RE: What exactly are tanks good for?

      That would be an interesting rule that meshes with the level of complexity already in the system.  It could be as simple as “If attacker has more tanks than defender, attacker can choose to fight an extra round” or something similar.

      Hopefully amazon.ca get some more sellers aside from the single one with the markup to $110 soon.  I don’t mind waiting longer for the free shipping.

    • RE: What exactly are tanks good for?

      He means that when you transport tanks you have three to four"hits" in a single transport.
      IE:  two transports landing 3 tanks and an obligatory infantry can take 7 hits before being wiped out(3 of which are ignored)
      With infantry only there are no free hits, and 4 hits wipe them out.

      Bottom line:  Tanks are economical to transport if an amphibious assault is in the plans.

      On the note of soaking up hits.  Since a tank is less effective than an infantry in combat, and costs twice as much, it must soak up two hits and still survive before it has “earned it’s cost”.  This means at least two attacking rounds.  If tanks are bought turn 4, and see combat turn 6(assuming it takes a minimum of two turns to get somewhere useful), it would take till turn 8 before a single tank on the board could have earned it’s cost.  I feel the game’s fate may already be decided at that point.

      In the end it may only be a good investment for the States and Britian due to the transport advantage, and britain can likely transport them off the factory to a frontline spot in a turn.

      My current predicition is that if there is a 2nd edition tanks will either decrease in cost an IPC or gain +1 to attack and/or defense.

      I wonder what the best strat for axis will be.  Italy first, then france, then russia? Or russia first, than you can focus on one front?

      I’ve been using a similar strategy.  Rather than do the attack on egypt G1, which even with everything is still dicey and pricey, I land 2 units in transjordan after killing the UK destroyer.  This limits the Indian fleet and sets me up for a turn 2 guaranteed victory in Egypt that conserves more forces.

      I doubt NOs will be in the game.  Larry has stated that this will be slightly simpler than AA1942, which doesn’t have NOs.

      If he later does a AA40 level version of WWI I’d expect to see something like those though.

      Perhaps just make a separate thread for house rules/wish-listing for 1914 to separate it from discussion of the official information, so there is no confusion?
