    • RE: How do you turn the corner with Russia

      In my experience as Russia, buying only infantry with occasional artillery for the first 4-8 turns depending on Germany’s moves usually works.

      The best scenario for Russia is when Germany builds a large navy and tries to beat USA on their home turf (or sea :-)). This allows Russia to build without much interference. If this happens, I would recommend building inf., art., and occasional tanks/planes. The inf. and art. is cheap while still being a decent attack force and the tanks/planes gives you high hitters.

      However, if Germany goes entirely your direction then prepare to buckle down and buy inf. for 6-10 rounds. If you get to a position where you begin to out build Germany on your front, then buy art. This allows you to turn all the inf. you already have into a more effective counterattacking force (combined arms). Germany also usually has more expensive units (i.e. tanks and bombers) than they do cheap units (i.e. inf. and art.). If that is the case than doing trade-offs will be in your favor. Attack their expensive units and only lose your cheap ones.

      All that being said, Russia will always need Allied support to deal with a determined German invasion. Having the British build a minor IC in Persia or an American one in Norway usually works well.

      Anyway, I hope that helps!

      That is why I think my victory conditions are better.  :-) (Btw, I refer to these conditions as the “1 and a 1/2” conditions).

      @Marshmallow:

      I think what you’ve proposed is far too easy to achieve. Japan gets four VCs in the Pacific by sneezing, and likewise for Germany with five. In my opinion 13 VCs globally is a much better Axis victory condition – that creates a very real multi-front war in which the Allies and Axis are constantly maneuvering, looking for an edge, and waiting for the other side to make a mistake. 13 VCs globally would be 8 in Europe and five in the Pacific, or 7 in Europe and 6 in the Pacific.

      Marsh

      What Screaming Eagle means is that Axis must win (8 VCs Europe or 6 VCs pacific) one side and control more than half (5+ in Europe or 4+ in pacific) on the other side to win the game.

    • RE: Question about Victory Conditions

      @ShadowHAwk:

      The current rules basicaly ensure that US and UK-pac stay honest in the pacific and the US and russia stay honest against germany and italy.

      Yes, but the Axis can usually win with OOB rules because they only need one side to win. So the Allies could control the entire pacific board but the Axis can take Russia (with Japanese help) and then barely take Cairo and win the game. Also, since Britain is split into two economies, if the Axis begin to win one side, they can’t shift all their resources to counter it like the US (with their ability to spend their money on whichever side they please). That is why I think my modified conditions (see my previous comment) make the game more fair.

      Quick question…

      Here is a situation that is confusing: Britain lands a mech inf in French West Africa, can it “blitz” through French Central Africa and French Equatorial Africa and take ownership of both? Assuming France is Axis controlled? I know that mechs can move 2 spaces through friendly territories but may not blitz through enemy terrs and take them over. Can they blitz through friendly terrs and take them over?

    • RE: Lessons Learned Global 1940

      Thanks all for the above tips…
      Being quiet is a HUGE thing. Yes, when introducing someone to the game it’s helpful to point out undefended transports. But shut up in a game with others your level. I can’t tell you how many things I’ve messed up from just saying “wow” or “oh boy” and then they look harder and see what it is. But the flip side is that you can sometimes make people switch their minds about certain moves by acting surprised and happy as if they’re making a big blunder (don’t over do it). Just wear your game face and don’t let opponents see you react.

    • RE: Question about Victory Conditions

      Here are my thoughts on what could make victory conditions a bit better…

      As said earlier, Axis must win one of two ways,

      Either take 8 VCs on the Europe map and control at least 4 (more than half) on the pacific board, or…

      Take 6 VCs on the pacific map and control at least 5 (more than half) on the europe board.

      The Allies must win one of two ways,

      Either take Berlin and Rome on the Europe map and limit the pacific Axis to no more than 3 (half of what they need) VCs, or…

      Take Tokyo on the pacific map and limit the Europe Axis to no more than 4 (half of what they need) VCs.

      So basically what this means is that to win you must completely rule one side and have the slight advantage on the other… Hope this helps!
