    • RE: When to Attack the US with Japan…......

Yes the J2 attack may be great for Japan……but what about your allies?

In the game Germany and Italy are more effected by the USA than Japan. For the Axis as a whole it seems like the J3 attack is a better idea.

Italy and Germany need more time to secure Africa and Russia before the USA is landing 6 transports a turn in Europe or Africa.

Especially if Germany builds enough infantry to take Russia they may not attack until G3 or even G4. If Japan attacks early it may force Germany to either attack Russia before it is ready, or to wait and then not have enough time to hurt Russia before the USA gets involved with multiple landings.

    • RE: When to Attack the US with Japan…......

That is my preferred timing as well. J3 seems to be the best turn to begin the attack on the USA and UK/ANZAC. If for some reason the UK attacks before the USA is at war……all the better for Japan to begin its move to the money islands and India.

On R1 if they leave the stack of 18 infantry exposed it is a fatal mistake to not attack. Later in the game if the stack lives to retreat most of your ground forces and air force will be focused on the UK, USA and China…not the Russians. So by taking them out early you can force them to slip their forces…even if you are not driving to Moscow it still distracts them from focusing entirely on Germany.

Delaying an extra round also gives you another turn to take out China. I saw Japan ignore them in a previous game (J2 attack) and they took back almost all of China by round 6…it was not pretty, only a major IC held them back and by then the USA was knocking on Paris’s door. Germany was 2 rounds from taking Moscow…but that was too long as the USA got involved too early with the J2 attack.

J3 delays Japan in getting the extra cash, but it helps to position your fleets and troops for well focused and sustainable attacks on the allies. Plus Germany and Italy benifit greatly from that extra turn of breathing space…especially as the US tends to focus more cash on Europe.

    • RE: Waiting for 1941?

Yeah the eralier Japan attacks the worse off Italy and Germany are. It makes it tough to take Russia when you have to immediately worry about the US taking out Italy, and or going for Europe.

      Not fun at all.

    • RE: Yugoslavia Exploit?

No. It is not a problem. It is part of the rules, and has been for some time now.

Any side can do it, so I don’t see how it would be unfair.

    • RE: German Push into USSR

Yes the push into Russia will be intersting. Even if Russia has more units Germany can win by not overextending, and picking its targets well.

France will be easy to defend with all those IC’s in the area to dump units into. So when attacking Russia you will have several advantages as Germany, depending on the dice gods as always……

      1. Russia can only guess where you will actually attack. You can focus on one city or all three…if they place units wrong in defense you can make them pay dearly.

      2. Russia is huge…hard to defend all that territory effectively. Even if Japan only makes small gains, it will help keep the defense divided.

      3. Do not rush!!! Do not expend all your infantry fodder. If you do wait for it to catch up with your mech and armor. Artillery is not to be underestimated. Its pays in spades to have those units attacking at a 2and not a 1.

      4. The deeper you get the longer you supply chain is…but reinforcing by the Baltic will work wonders. And the deeper you get the less cash Russia has. When you get close to Moscow the Russian player will tend to make bad moves the more nervous they get.

      Just some thoughts and comments.

    • RE: Pieces count

Yeah, not enough subs for Germany….same thing with carriers for the UK.

I have raided all my old sets to bring extra pieces in. All my factories and AA guns as well. 2 factories for a major, 1 for a minor.

      I hate those cardboard pieces.

    • RE: Italy a bad design

Hmmmm, well in case the UK does not want to do the Italy attack, or sit in Gibralter and chance a German or Itailian attack they could take the carrier up to Canada….

This obviously depends on the German sub placement, but you could build Infantry in the UK to deter the Sealion threat, and have a safe harbor in Canada to rebuild your navy.

      Just a thought.

    • RE: Russian Fleet

I could see a Russian naval purchace once the German navy is sunk, and the majority of its air assets are destroyed. So maybe later in the game.

Subs would be usefull in the North for convoy raiding.

I would only buy a destroyer to block naval bombardment of Lenningrad……on truns after the orgional BB is sunk.

Other than that Germany will rape your fleet with air, subs and or its fleet.

You need as many boots on the ground as possible, even more so than Germany.

    • RE: Italy a bad design

      @Uncle_Joe:

Whereas I have not been able to look at this issue in-depth yet, I would just caution people from jumping down the throats of people who make early balance claims. :)
The point being that yes, many claims about balance will obviously be premature at this point, but it’s certainly possible to see various trends even this early in the game’s life cycle.  :)

Well said!! It does look like Italy will get the short end of the stick without help from Germany. It also looks like threatening Sealion may help to save the Italian fleet……only time will tell. Also many people on these forums will attack Italy’s fleet UK1, but how many average Joe gamers who do not venture on the forums will actually do it?

I am guessing it will be roughly a 50/50 split, and will depend on the player. So at this point at least global is dependent on player moves, and not only the setup like revised. There seem to be many more options in AA40 than revised and limits the ammount of set opening moves. Many of these theories depend heavily on the G1 turn, and how the UK responds. So in my book that is a step forward from previous versions of the game.

    • RE: G1 Barbarossa

      @Napoleon:

G3 seems optimal for me, massing the right troops in the right place.

I like the G3, or even G4 attack depending on how the battles are going, unit placements etc. The more ground units Germany gets on the ground the better in the frist few turns. Once the US gets involved it will be harder to send men to the East front. Tacs and fighters and bombers will be invaluable for their ability to be used in destroying fleets, and Russians with little to no trunaround. In the later rounds I can see alot of tank, and mech purchases to rush units to hot zones.

I think a G1 Barbarose helps the Allies and spells the end of the game for the Axis, unless they get amazing rolls.

    • RE: G1 options

I have not played a full game yet, but on G1 there is no way I would attack Russia.

Need to kill Uk navy, France and Yugoslavia. That way on G2 you can place an IC there and get subs, or a carrier into the med to help out Italy from G3 moving on.

I can see a G3 or even G4 attack on Russia as working well. Russia goes to war on turn 4 if it wants, but Germany still get to move first and gain the initiative on the Eastern front.

I would give southern France to Italy, and let them take Greece when they are able to. And hope the Uk does not sink Italy’s fleet. The Uk can lose a lot of ships round 1, but also has the income to rebuild a fleet over time. Italy is much more strapped for cash.

From seeing posts it seems many people favor an early attach on Russia. And they all run out of steam before getting to Moscow.

Here are the main points for delaying the offensive:

Germany needs a lot of boots on the ground to sustain a drive to the East. Rounds 2-4 are great for this. After that you most likely have to watch out for the US/UK and save Italy. If you attack Russia to early you lose out on having a well prepared assault with reinforcemnts.

    • RE: Any players in New York City?

I’m in NJ but would be up for a Game of Global when it comes out. I’ll be in NYC the 27th-29th for a friends birthday party.

I could squeeze in a game on the 29th if anyone is playing then.

    • RE: AAE40 setup ( now verified)

How will the land units be represented? Historically the Russian troops outnumbered the Germans, but had equipment spread out all over the front when Barbarossa began in 1941. The Germans were able to punch holes in the lines and creat massive encirclements of the Russian troops……that is tough to accomplish with the current game mechanics.

Going purely off the numbers how will the axis even have a shot at victory?

I understand that unit quality, troop experience etc. will need to be accounted for…but how can that be quantified?

    • RE: WOTC listened

Well I received my battle strip and six Jap bombers……good thing they had already sent me six before. It was sent in an envelope and half the tac bombers are twisted and mangled.

Go figure. I hope everyone else who receives the extras gets them in better shape. Although I am just going to give the second set of six to a buddy.

    • RE: Getting extra pieces?

      Hi all,

Only 2 have received extra tac bombers? Wow.

I can only hope that if enough people are sending in letters, emails etc. that WOTC will finally try to fine tune these products more before release. And not skimp on the plastic parts as they always do.

Having enough plastic chips and spare pieces is usually not an issue for most of us who own every AA game out there. I have combined most of my old pacific pieces with AAP40, and will do the same with Europe when it arrives……except for these tac bombers. I hope for Europe they give more than 6 of the tac bombers and mec infantry, because Germany and Russia will be using those heavily I think.

I know WOTC does not have a good track record for listening to us, but hopefully some of this will sink in.

And good luck to everyone else trying to get extra pieces!!! Post if you get 'em.

    • RE: Getting extra pieces?

      Hi,

I received my 6 Japanese  Tac Bombers this Monday in the mail.

I had to send about six essays to WOTC to get them, but it was worth it.

I tried to be as nice as possible……while pointing out every mistake included in the game. I basically said they never listen to their fan base and ignore the requests from their biggest customers.

I wrote a 3 page long letter to this effect. And mentioned that Europe had better come with the right number of pieces and have some one run spell check on the box.

I think I just got the peices because I was sending them at least one email a day.

Bug them enough and they may just listen…if you are lucky, maybe…
