Then you could buy all your infantry at least the first round to be safe, and now you have the following for defense of London.

      6 fighters
1 tac bomber (unless you want to keep this in the African/Middle East theatre for a little punch.)
4 infantry + Malta infantry & tank from Alexandria, unless once again you want these in Africa
Possibly 1 infantry and 1 tank from Quebec
      9 infantry turn 1 buy

Thats going to make London really hard to take!

Another option is send carrier and cruiser up to SZ 106 as a consolidation point. If your transport and destroyer survived, you already have a little fleet in the Atlantic!

Perhaps you should just get the carrier and cruiser over to SZ 91, then move all aircraft to London, then move the carrier and cruiser to a safer place, possibly towards South Africa.

I guess it depends on where the German transports are. In our games they are usually in 113, so they would have to go through 110 to land that turn. If they are in 112 then yes you have to roadblock. If your destroyer from 106 is not attacked turn one, then you could use it.

One, the Italians would have to control Gibraltar at the beginning of their turn. I also think the UK could possibly roadblock the Italians in SZ 104, though theoretically German aircraft could take care of a lone destroyer. If Italy comes out I feel like they are kind of taking their eye off the ball in Africa, which as the UK I would welcome. It is only worth it to me if it helps guarantee a successful Sea-Lion.

Using your strategy, I am actually considering next game turn 1 buy for the UK: 1 carrier, 1 destroyer, and an infantry. (It kind of depends on what Germany buys)

This will give London the following units to defend for possible turn 2 Sea Lion: 6 infantry, 1 tank, 1 tac bomber (french) plus possibly 1 infantry and 1 tank from Quebec.

To assault London turn 2 Germany will have to go through the following: 2 carriers, 6 fighters, 1 destroyer, 1 cruiser (possibly a second depending on battle in SZ 91). On top of that, depending on the dice roll, I oftentimes have a battleship or cruiser or destroyer that survives his assault in the Atlantic.

This strategy depends largely on the following:
      1. What Germany builds turn 1
      2. Where Germany positions their aircraft at the end of turn 1
      3. How much of my fleet, if any, survives the German turn 1 assault

Yes good point. So infantry from Malta and possibly tank from Alexandria. I was thinking, even if your fleet is sunk by German subs, it definitely worth getting up 3 extra aircraft to London, as usually I only flew up the one from Gibraltar. British airpower based out of London always comes in handy later in the game! I typically buy infantry in London b/c I am expecting Sea-Lion. However once I see the threat is gone I save for a couple turns, then BAM drop a big fleet in the Atlantic, which immediately demand his attention in the west, giving Russia breathing room. With all of those aircraft your in a similar situation as Japan in that all you have to do is drop the carriers. I like the carriers b/c then you can threaten Norway, West Germany, etc. I think you may have just secured Allied victory even more lol. The Axis already had an uphill battle but now I see it as even harder to take London.

I guess you could always just build a destroyer turn 1  :-P I am a little hesitant though to be putting ships in the water instead of infantry in London, though for your scenario it might just be worth it. Also, not sure if you mentioned it but what about brining a tank and infantry from Africa as well to bolster your defense of London? I know its leaving Africa scarce but I think the game is already essentially won if Germany fails at Sea-Lion, especially if they lose though aircraft, which they will likely do if they go all out.

      I like this!

The only potential weakness I see to this is if Germany, as they did when I played them, drops 5 subs turn 1. Those subs, along with around 1-3 more depending on how turn one battles went, could go after your fleet, which I believe would likely not have a destroyer present if you use the one in the Atlantic to screen. This would mean a lot of sneak shots plus no aircraft could defend. So if I am not mistaken (once again depending on how much of your fleet survives turn 1) it could be about 5 or so subs against 1 carrier and 1 cruiser.

However, I think most German players are unlikely to drop the subs turn 1.

    • What to do with Japan

There seems to be somewhat of a general consensus on what to do with Germany (Sea-Lion or at the very least feint it) and Italy (Africa, Middle East, Southern Russia).

However, I was wondering what you guys think Japans primary focus should be, along with any secondary objectives. It seems to me that Japan is the hardest to play, given that a 100% Pacific strategy by the US is nearly impossible to overcome. With that being said, should the Japs simply try to hold on as long as possible, taking as much land in the meantime as they possibly can? Should they go for a knockout blow in Calcutta or NSW? Should they try to assist Germany by keeping the heat on the Russians in the east? Etc.

    • RE: Russia Turn 2

      German troops positions:
      E Poland: 21 infantry, 4 mech, 6 tanks, 5 artillery, AA
      Poland: 5 artillery, 5 infantry, 1 tank
      Germany: 9 tanks, 5 tacs, 5 fighters, 1 bomber
      Romania: 5 infantry
      Karelia: 4 infantry

If he moves his E Poland army forward to Belarus, I could hit them with about:
      31 infantry, 2 mech, 6 tanks, 8 artillery, 1 tac, 2 fighters

In reserve I would have about 9 infantry and 1 tank, minus purchases for the round. Obviously my advantage is my troops would be right on the front. I also have all (18) of my eastern forces, but will probably make a stand this round against Japan since he vacated the Jap supporting aircraft out of Siberia. My 18 would face 10 infantry and 1 tank. If worse comes to worse I could throw a few British aircraft out of Persia into Moscow for the defense

      Worth it??

    • RE: Russia Turn 2

      @Cmdr Jenn,

I read your Russian strategy somewhere on here and have followed it for the most part, although you say Russia can have 3 turns of 37 Ipcs and i didnt have the 3rd b/c Japs were taking my income in east, and I wanted to retreat away from his aircraft range, forcing him to commit to using it in Siberia or China/India/home defense.

I have a good balance of infantry, artillery, and tanks with Russia.

I am not sure what to do other than slowly retreat back to Moscow, as you recommend a strategy of picking off German infantry or going for stacks of tanks when exposed. However, he has massed everything together, and currently has 23 or so infantry plus about 8-10 tanks (with more coming from Germany) and artillery and mech, ALL massed in east Poland I believe (the one south of Leningrad and 2 turns out from Moscow)

I hesitate to attack that stack b/c I dont want to throw away units that are better on the defense. Or should I? Last game I did and had favorable rolls and wiped the German army, which pretty much secured the game, or at least bought Russia a lot more time. What I fear on the defensive though is German aircraft.

Thoughts on what I should do?

    • RE: Important question regarding Sea-Lion

Here is where our game stands as is:

      1. UK has about 24 or so infantry, with all original fighters plus the one from Gibraltar. I just dropped 2 destroyers in north convoy zone and moved my fighters to Scotland in an attempt to rid those German subs.

      2. Germany is two turns out from Sea-Lion, so at least I will see it coming if/when they move their transports. They could throw in 10 ground units plus all of their aircraft, which are also out of position (on russian front). Germany has a huge army in east poland, with about 22 infantry or so plus a lot of tanks (around 8-10) with some mech and artillery. They seem to be going with the traditional, huge army push towards moscow to deter a russian counterattack and force a Moscow turtle.

      • Germany is eating away at UKs money with 6 subs in convoy zone off London
      • they also have 2 subs in mid-atlantic which could be used to roadblock US fleet

      3. Italy has not broken through into sub-sahara africa, or past the coastline in the middle east. However they are sitting at Gibraltar with 3 transports which could mean a second wave (6 units) at Sea-lion, or to reinforce if Germany takes it.

*4. Here is where I have to make a decision……The US: I only have 2 destroyers, 1 cruiser, and 1 transport off east coast. I have been going ALL Pacific, and have a huge fleet at Hawaii. This has put the Japs on the defensive in the Sea of Japan. Japs are crushing China, and seem to be threatening India strike, but are 2 turns out for that unless they build a naval base. Would still be risky though IMO.

Those are the details of our game. Basically I am not sure what to do with the US. Drop a huge fleet in the Atlantic?? Let the UK be and keep pressing hard in Pacific?

    • Axis Europe Strategy (Sea-Lion)

It seems like there is a general consensus on here that in order for the Axis to win, German must conduct a successful Sea-Lion.

I was wondering if someone who has used this strategy could post exactly what they did, specifically with regard to Germany.
      1. What did you buy the first few turns
      2. What round did you conduct Sea-Lion on
      3. When did you invade the Soviet Union?
      4. What general strategy do you do with Germany after successfully completing Sea-Lion (What is the key to beating Russia etc.)
      5. What is the general strategy for Italy?
Your help would be much appreciated, and would probably be helpful to others as well.

    • Rules Question (Krieghund help!! lol)

Hey Krieghund (sp?) or anyone else out there, I need to questions answered for a game we are playing now.

      1. If the US is not yet at war with Japan, and flies their fighter from the Philipinnes to Burma or Kwangtung, if the Japanese then attack the British in either of those territories, does it provoke the US and bring them into the war? Or can this non-combat move even be made by the US

      2. Can Russia, when not yet at war, move ships into a seazone with UK ships, and can they move into a seazone with German ships?

      3. Can Russia, when not at war, move into NW Persia?

      Thank you!

Has anyone ever considered the following IF the Germans do not threaten SeaLion: UK positions their stack of fighters in Scotland. Once Germany goes for Russia, they move them all to Leningrad and make it a fortress.

      Imp. Leader,

While a new setup may be ideal, I simply don’t have that kind of time. My question for you is what would you change to the current setup to balance it out? I mean if your group you play with said they wanted to do this, but they asked you to propose a few changes to the original starting pieces, or house rules, etc., what would you propose?

It has been pointed out that Italy would be too strong (would ensure a fall of London) and Japan would be too weak (too many Allies in Pacific). Perhaps a few changes should be made to address these concerns? Thoughts…?
