    • RE: John Brown's 96x48 Global 1940 Waterproof Metal Map

      @CWO:

      @John:

      It is not letting me put any more pictures. It says the file is too large. How do you put more pictures? Do you have to wait for someone else to post? Any help would be appreciated.

      Great-looking map!

      The maximum number of pictures you can attach is two per post, and the maximum allowable size of each attachment is 1,563 KB.  If any if your pictures are over this limit, try pasting them into Microsoft Paint, shrinking them, then re-saving them under a new name.

      This will also make it easier to see the entire image without having to scroll from left to right and up and down.

      Very nice map! I was not aware that this was in the works. I’m excited to see it with some pieces.

    • RE: Future Painting Tutorial: Requests on Content and Format?

      @John:

      I don’t know what everyone else likes, but I like videos. For example, you showing everyone how to put these I 94 decals on or how you do those awesome dry brush techniques, you are always talking about, or the whole process of a painted piece, from the time you prime it to the finishing coat, including how to place the decals on.

      Any of those would be cool videos! :-D

      Good to know! I have never tried videos, as I don’t have the camera skills (or the camera, for that matter) to film close up like that. I have friends around who have the equipment though, so I might give it a shot.

      @jwo1984:

      Hey spitfire… I liked the layout of yor original painting tutorial… With stages photos befores and afters with descriptions under each photo and stage.  I would like too see some face washes you use on infantry men. And some washes you use for a variety of infantry moulds. Even a gallery too showcase some of your personal playing pieces would be cool!

      I will definitely do a tutorial on washes! I’m planning on doing another in depth infantry tutorial, so that will feature the face washes you’re talking about.

    • Future Painting Tutorial: Requests on Content and Format?

      As the title suggests, I am looking for suggestions or requests for specific elements to include in an upcoming tutorial article(s) for this site. Also, if you want a particular kind of photo angle, or want to see a specific format (i.e. video, photo tutorial, more text instructions, etc.), please let me know. I have a few topics in mind, but I want to hear from you guys what you would be interested in. All input is appreciated!

    • RE: John Brown's Painted G1940 Set - by Spitfire38

      @jwo1984:

      awesome work spitfire! love the camo colors! did they come out of your head or was that a actual scheme used in war you referenced? The black lines really add that contrast making the pieces stand out nicely.

      The stripes bordered with the black are an idea from Allworkandnoclay that John Brown liked, but the specific color mixes are my own spin on it. If I can find the photo of the colors, I’ll post it. The lines are essentially a light bluish-green, so that when I use the brown ink wash, it will come out as a darker green. The lines are a very dark brown, rather than a black, to give it a bit more of a natural jungle camo color scheme.

      I’m glad you guys like them!

      The Japanese ground forces have been posted! The photos are in a yellow light, rather than natural light, which changes the colors a bit, so they look a bit different than in reality. Maybe John Brown can post some when he gets them in the mail.

      Japanese: Completed.

      Weather update: I’m waiting for a warmer day to spray the pieces, at which point I will photograph and upload them as well! I’ve attached a photo of what it looks like outside - a bit too cold for spraying :) I will be headed down South in the next few days though, where I should be able to spray the pieces and bring them back with me.

      @jwo1984:

      Great spitefire thanks! If you could really focus in on your washes…that would be great for myself personally. All the pieces I have painted have all been mixed color and dry brushed. Your style seems too implement washes even with ships planes and tanks? It looks like on John Browns japanese naval units there could be some washes over some of the ships?

      Yes, I have started washing every single unit that I paint except for some planes. I only wash planes that are painted dark and have good details to be brought out. (Look at the FW-190s from HBG to see what I mean.) It is my version of “weathering” or battle hardening it. It makes it look like it’s got a coat of dirt, dust, and grime on it.

    • RE: HBG's British supplement set

      @LHoffman:

      I don’t remember if this is the one I asked you for or your response to one of my questions, but it was excellent. I don’t have much time to devote to making tutorials and I mostly just experiment with what I think will work well. But having a proven method explained (with pictures) can be invaluable. Nice work.

      An infantry tutorial would be most helpful for me I think. I have only made one attempt at infantry, which went pretty well. But I need to refine my technique and get the wash process down, instead of just drybrushing over layers. And I am considering not even attempting to draw out details of faces in the future. Easier just to do some sort of matte color on them. Plus they won’t turn out looking like something from Freddy vs Jason. Wow this photo lighting is poor.

      Like you say LHoffman, experimentation is the best way to figure out what works. I haven’t painted a single piece where I was entirely sure of how I was going to do it. It’s always some uncertainty in color mixing and how the colors will change once washed, or uncertainty in how the camo will turn out, or if the drybrushing will be too much… you get the picture. I see what you mean by “Freddy vs. Jason”. He’s a rather terrifying GI  :-o

      Ok, I will post an infantry tutorial next time that I paint infantry. Either the Chinese or ANZAC infantry will be next.

    • RE: HBG's British supplement set

      @jwo1984:

      hope this can give some ideas! I will say I tend too be more particular with details and extras on the pieces but that’s cause I am only painting 2-4 of the unit types. I have mad admiration to the volume guys who are turning out quality units in variety of colors squadrons and shear numbers! wow guys!

      Spitefire38, any chance you could do a few stage shots of your infantry men? I m curious too see your process and how you get your colors and details on the men? if you get a chance of course  :-D

      This was actually really helpful. I think I like minimal weathering, so I would probably just use your small brush technique and your dry-brushing, but the nice part about weathering is that you can apply as much as you want. Your rust on your KV-1s looks really nice as well - I add rust, but I don’t mix in the silver with it; I think I will start doing that on my personal pieces from now on. Thanks for the tutorial! And I’m glad to hear that my tutorial thread helped out a little bit. I want to get back to doing tutorials, but I don’t know what people want to see.

      Once I start the next pieces for John, I’ll do some staging shots and tutorials. So you want to see how I choose/mix colors and how I get the details? In the face, uniform, gun…? I’ll hopefully have time for some more painting this weekend, where I’ll do John Brown’s Japanese ground forces.

      Great work! They look fantastic. I had never thought about doing that weathering. Can you go into a little more detail on how you applied that silver paint? (i.e. how you decided where to put it, how you brushed it on, etc.)

      @jwo1984:

      Looks like Christmas came early for John brown! Wow spitefire those infantry are some of the best I’ve seen on here! I love the Browns you used for their uniforms and the accented details and dark washes. The bases of the men too are superb! There must be 40 some units you painted?! I’m inspired great work!

      @LHoffman:

      Seconded! Very impressive.

      Thanks guys! I’m really glad that you enjoy them. jwo1984, you are correct in saying that there are 40 standard infantrymen and 4 paratroopers. John will need legions of Japanese soldiers if he is to conquer the Pacific! I’d recommend that he gets some Allied pieces painted soon, or else there will be nobody to stand in their way ;)
