    • SBR on air bases / naval bases

      I was wondering, does anyone bother to ever do strategic bombing raids on a AB/NB?

      If i understand the rules correctly, it is a high risk operation with very low gain: you risk losing a 12 IPC bomber (instant AA)  to do a maximum of 3 IPC damage (since the first 3 doesn’t really needs to be paid off to have the AB/NB operational again…)
      And the enemy can repair all damage in the beginning of its turn, before any movement is made, so any AB/NB of importance won’t ever be taken down for even 1 turn.

      Unless i have read the rules wrong, i really don’t see the point of such SBR’s, unless maybe at the very end of a game…
      (if they got repaired at the end of the victim’s turn, then i would see some use for it)

    • RE: How to counter J3 India Crush?

      @Lord:

      In my limited experince there are two decent counter strategies for the Brittish.

      One is to move everything to Burma Turn 1 in order to trade your units for japanese air units. This also requires you to use your navy to screen Burma from the japanese transports. The japanese player will propably attack you with only air, because if he doesnt you will likely be able to hold India to turn 4. With good rolls this move can be expensive for the japanese player, and perhaps help the US hold Caroline islands later on.

      It’s very helpful to move your India AA with the troops to Burma (and buy a fresh one for India, although that can even wait a little bit, depending on the threat).

      There’s (obviously) a lot of history, and all is in a way connected, so i’d recommend plundering the history section of your local library.

      There’s even a History For Dummies book, which is in fact not that bad at all, maybe a good start to get a good overview of everything.

    • RE: How useful are cruisers??

      @MrMalachiCrunch:

      It’s an interesting point about Germany feeling the restrictions on ability to build large numbers of Inf and having amphibious assult attrition cut into Germanys ability to produce large walls of infantry?  In spring 42 its pretty easy for germany to build 16 INF per turn so I would guess in over versions its not as easy for germany to produce lots of infantry?

      Buying them will be easy, but placing them won’t be, unless they have extra IC’s, of course.
      Then again even 10 unites per turn is quite a lot.

      Edit: about cruisers: sometimes i buy one for USA to help out in the Pacific when i want to take back islands. Every extra hit (coastal) there is valuable, since those japanese soldiers often manage to defend pretty good, taking away a unit each time. Far away from home a shrinking ground force is a problem.

      I know a bomber can do that work too, but, depending on the fleet, that cruiser can help in defense.

      Another situation can be when i start building a fleet at a 3 IPC factory (for ex. Brazil or India) i choose for a cruiser + some other units (for abit extra initial defence)… but if i can easily afford a BB i would buy that instead.

    • RE: Need Some Help Understanding the J3 India Crush

      @Xayd74:

      So you’re right. Scrambling is for islands only.

      I don’t know the acronym VC. I see on the acronym thread there’s a CV for Cruisers. If memory serves, I had 4 cruisers and 2 BS for bombardment options. By Japan’s R3, the US and ANZAC fleets were, together, noteworthy, but not yet in position.

      VC = Victory City

      And yeah, their technology did suck; I once heard that a bullet from a pistol would punch through the armor of an WWII Italian tank. Not sure if it’s true, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was.

      The Japanese were quite similar. It was like their tanks were made of bamboo or something. Not very well protectd. Then again, they did not need tanks the way everyone else did…

      Does anyone know how many gears an Italian tank has?

      5… 4 speeds in Reverse and 1 Drive, incase the enemay attacks from behind.

      the enema always attacks from behind  :-D

      @MrMalachiCrunch:

      Europe is pretty amazing, most young people speak english.  I spent 2 weeks in Holland for work.  I was amazed at how well everyone under the age of 50 spoke english.  Some dutch speak english so well from watching tv from england its almost as if they have an english accent.  Holland might not be bad, you are too young to really enjoy say Amsterdam but the dutch are still really fond of Canucks due to our part in the liberation of Holland.  But again, what do you want to see?  If you can rent an apartment for a month that would be ‘da bomb’!  Sounds much much cheaper than hotels.

      In countries as belgium (the dutch part) and Holland we always had subtitles on our own channels, so most younger people automatically learned english by watching TV and movies.

      If you love good beer: visit Belgium  :-D

      I am under legal drinking age  :-D

      Oops yeah, i forgot that  :lol:

      @idk_iam_swiss:

      They way to do it is rent an apartment for a month its only about 300 eruos compared to staying in a 2 star hostel ( about 700 for one WEEK) Thats how we did it. Europe is amazing as long as you go with freinds that arent older than 25. Old people make a trip to Europe old and borng.

      Where would be the best place, like UK, France, Low Countries, Spain/Portugal, Germany, Countries in between Germany and Italy, Italy, Greece, Old Yugoslavian places, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Baltic States, Belarus, or the Ukraine.

      As a rule of thumb: the more south you go in (the western parts of) Europe, the cheaper life is.

      But, the more northern you go, the more people will know english ;)

      If you want really cheap prices i can also recommend Asia (Vietnam for example, has gone up in price a lot the last few years, but is still very cheap. In food, and in accomodation. The flight might be more expensive though…

      Edit: you can also consider doing several countries, of course

    • RE: German strategy for the world game

      @Dylan:

      @brettstarr4:

      I don’t like that tanks are 6 IPC’s in this edition of hte game.  I liked them better at 5, because they were a reasonable buy.  Tanks were still the less efficient buy according to precise mathematical calculations, but reasonable.  Now are we going back to the earlier editions of AA where everyone just builds infanry every turn and the person who gets sick of building infantry and goes with tanks eventually loses??

      One might argue tanks should be 7. Because tanks can move farther are 3 and 3 in combat, but yet Mech Infantry are 4 just because they can move a bit faster, so yeah.

      But then again mechs can’t blitz.

      Personally, I think tanks at 6 ipc is a good thing for the game.

    • RE: AA Europe '40 Box Art

      @LHoffman:

      I would agree with Lozmoid also. I guess it would have been fine by me if they had left off the flags… if they had done that in the first place we wouldn’t have had our previous discussion. I would agree that this new one looks more or less ‘boring’ in comparison to others I have seen. It also seems somewhat less creative. But hey… it is what it is, and I am still excited for it.

      I don’t have a problem with the flags, nor the choice of a french flag there; there’s logical reasoning behind it.

      Flags, because Pacific 40 box has flags in the center as well, and since the 2 games are supposed to be playable as a whole, the box art should reflect this to some degree.

      A french flag, not because French was the prima donna of the war, but because France will be the main newly added aspect in the new game (and possible the center of the action).

      So, about content, i think art director & illustrator did a decent job. Visually, well… it fits the series.
      And yes, it’s what’s inside the box that counts!
