    • RE: AAG40 FAQ

      @Gamerman01:

      Actually, Cow, I bought a Soviet bomber on R2 the only 2 Alpha3 games I’ve played so far, and both times it got shot down immediately on the first mission, and without doing any damage!  (one SBR, another trying to fend off the Japs and hitting nothing)

      But Russia shouldn’t be doing bombing raids with that bomber at all!
      It’s needed for offensive power together with INF & ART (instead of tanks who usually get killed off after they have taken a territory), combined with the superior range, necessary in such a large country.
      For the price of 2 tanks you get a unit that (if used without too much risk) will last many turns.

      @Gargantua:

      I know I can get the average customer to take the beer off the shelf based off my strategy the first time they see it.  And we’ll be in business if they come back to get the beer off the shelf the second time, because it tasted so damn good.

      Is the answer “boobie-pictures” ? :D

      (i’d buy some)

    • RE: Best Movie Ever Saw in Theater?

      My top 3 would be:

      **Reservoir Dogs ** (i’m not a big cinema goer but i’ve seen most Tarantino’s in the cinema, and liked them. The first one is always the most special)
      **Blair Witch project ** (effective in its minimalism. I decided not to murder the idiot who said “is it finished?” at the end, as i had to pee)
      Avengers (even though i’m not really a superhero fan i went along with someone, because i like Josh Whedon, and hey… it was just very, very well done. scenario, acting, effects, i was entertained every second, it was a blast!)

      Seen all of these in a near-empty cinema (i hate crowds)

    • RE: Battleships

      Cruisers have their use for USA or UK (i mostly use them in low-luck, as 2 cruisers is a sure coastal hit)

      As for battleships, i agree with Make_it_round. Their price is fair (though not cheap, but they shouldn’t be, as they get too powerful once you have a few of them)

    • RE: UK rd 1 Taranto in the face of Sea Lion?

      Are we talking Alpha 3.9?

      Personally i like to attack Tobruk (and the italian ships around Malta) instead of a full on fleet attack (i need the Malta fighter for clearing sz96 though). Axis access to Egypt can be blocked and with some help from India (air force and ships) UK can assemble a decent force, while using all the money in protecting London.
      Does that fighter make the difference? I honestly don’t know.

      LOL Where can we see the LEAST respected member?

      That’s got to be Rodney Dangerfield.

      Why can’t i ever have the sex-genie!?

      on-topic: don’t know particular battles, but somwhere in a jungle defending against a wild japanese bayonetted attack would sound fine.
      (Waterloo would be interesting as well)

    • RE: Should you liberate France?

      @Cmdr:

      Spendo02/Yavid,

      Understood, but how can we fix that problem?  Churchill and Roosevelt would never avoid liberating Paris just because they’d magically lose control of cities they already liberated - right?

      So I was thinking, what if Allied nations could only liberate French territories, they can never take possession?  Makes sniping Madagascar kinda worth it - sometimes (like if you can retreat the transport later!), means taking the NO for N. Africa is no longer tantamount to giving America more money, etc.  Also helps Germany since the allies are not producing in Normandy/Vichy France.

      But this wouldn’t fix the problem of giving Germany the full French income again next turn.

      An alternative fix would be that the Allies can decide how much income they give back to the liberated nation (be it france, UK or whoever, with the minimum of the IPC of the liberated capital), the total amount of money on a side will remain the same.

    • RE: Explaining abbreviations please?

      Good idea to make an abrv. list.  :)
      Here some additions:

      CM (combat move)
      NCM (non combat move)
      ATL (atlantic)
      PAC (pacific)
      FIC (french indo china)
      TRUC (the carolines, took me a while to figure this one out)

      BMB (is what i use for bombers)
      FIG (fighter)
      TAC (tactical bomber, i’ve seen TB too)
      AC (aircraft carrier, some people use CV too)
      CRU (cruiser, some use something else which i can’t remember)
      BB (Battleship)
      SUB (some use SS)
      TRP (i think some use TT)

    • RE: Confused with submarines

      @tomojaco:

      thanks!

      one more:
      but if an enemy ships (with no destroyer) are attacking my ships and i also have a sub in this see zone with which i make a surprise attack (as a defender) and later an enemy hits me, can he/she hit the sub, or is it still invisible to them?

      those rules are killing me  :lol:

      From what i know, if you attack a sub with (for example) a cruiser, it can chose to either submerge (before the cruiser gets a chance to attack) or defend (if it defends it gets to shoot before the cruiser, so if it hits, the cruiser would sink before it can attack).

      Simply said: in a battle (without destroyers) first the attacking subs fire and defending subs fire, then casualties are removed (so a hit sub can shoot back but a hit cruiser or carrier cannot), and then the remaining (attacking and defending) surface war ships (and air) can fire.

      I think “first strike” would be less confusing than “surprise strike”

      edit: i hope i’m correct here :D

    • RE: Russian Strategy in 1940 Global

      It’s tricky: as Russia you have to double the amount you would offer the Germans for your fleet to pass (x IPC less for Russia to build + x IPC more for germany), not so sure it’s a good deal if they agreed…

      Still, i might try it next time i play (they’ll decline anyway)

    • RE: Questions on how to play Japan

      @Noll:

      @Cow:

      I am more of a carrier fighter guy. best bang for the buck in defense… in fact it costs more to kill it than it does to produce it.

      Carrier 16 fighters 20 = 36

      2 ss 12 and 2bmb 24 = 36

      and 2@2 is better than 1@2 and 2 hits

      He said defense.

      so technically it is 1/1/1/1 vs 4/4/2 +soaker

      (even though in reality that wouldn’t make sense, i know that)

      About the cost to kill it, you have a point though

    • RE: Japan

      @vonLettowVorbeck1914:

      (…) as well as using Kamikazes. The possibility that the USA player can be forced to take hits on his carriers, meaning planes will crash if there is not enough space freed up, can mean that you have more defending Japan than it actually looks.

      About kamikazes, if i understand the latest rules correctly, USA can avoid kami’s on their AC’s by sending their planes and other ships into the SZ in the combat move (taking kamikazes and scramblers on those), then moving their aircraft carriers into the SZ in the non-combat move (and landing the planes on them).

    • RE: Russian Alpha 3 NO a Mistake?

      @vonLettowVorbeck1914:

      “Also, when Russia falls (unavoidable since Germany goes Russia each time anyway),”

      To me, the above quote is the problem (not the person that said it, just the fact that it is probably true). I just don’t think this NO was thought out very well. Sealion was dead enough with all the other changes, this was not necessary and can make for some pretty absurd situations (my opponent went sealion and I am making 19 IPC from 4 IPC worth of territory, and if USA were interested in comitting more to defend transports in the med, I would have 6 more with Sardinia and Sicily.)

      Did every axis/pro-axis give bonus? Not only the ones with an IPC value?, i kinda forgot that.

    • RE: Russian Alpha 3 NO a Mistake?

      Every game i have considered taking Mid-East territories with Russia, and every game i took it withe UK, who can use it much better.
      Also, when Russia falls (unavoidable since Germany goes Russia each time anyway), the income of those territories won’t be lost after Moscow is lost.

      Also, Russia can only got here once it’s at war, right? So even in case of a sea-lion (where Germany would probably wait to attack Stalin) they can’t leave Russian soil…

      Would those IPC’s make the difference for Moscow? I don’t know. But i’m not too convinced.

      As for Iraq, whenever possible i like to leave it for USA (only happened once, in a Europe OOB)

    • RE: First turn rules: can you buy units?

      Each nation starts with the IPC’s mentioned on their set-up chart, and can buy in the beginning of their first turn.
      So yes, you can.

      Edit: i forgot if the Spring 42 has paper money included or not. If not, it’s best to take money from another game, it is much clearer to play that way - without paper money income and cash easily get confused.
      Anyway, every nation gets their starting money before the game begins, so changes in income along the way only affects the next turn’s income.

    • RE: Would you date a woman in the Navy?

      @Mallery29:

      @LHoffman:

      @special:

      I wouldn’t want to be married to someone with a dangerous job. I can see myself worrying all the time and being victim to my overly vivid imagination.

      Not to diminish the navy, but I don’t think either the US or Canadian Navies are exactly hazardous occupations. I am sure many more women construction workers or athletes get seriously injured each year than those in the navy. Barring working on a flight deck or being a Marine… or perhaps a pilot… US Navy ships are comparably much safer to be on in the current state of world affairs than to be in land combat; either now in “peacetime” or in a full out war.

      I got a papercut this one time….got a Purple Heart for it  :wink:

      Purple heart shaped sticker to cover the cut :)

      edit: can’t find the correct english word, my english is really failing today, ugh)

      edit 2: band aid, of course!
