    • RE: Can Russia survive? (Alpha +3)

      @Cmdr:

      I’d be in favor of changing the Russian NOs to something more historic anyway - not that Larry ever agreed with me.

      Russian NO 1:  SZ 125/Arkhangelsk - 5 IPC - Lend Lease
      Russian NO 2:  Leningrad - 5 IPC - retainership of Russias only real European style city, a major port for Russia and Russian pride
      Russian NO 3:  Stalingrad - 5 IPC - maintenance of industrial capacity, Named after leader of Russia (Russian Pride)
      Russian NO 4:  Finland + Norway - 5 IPC (has to be owned by Russia, not an allied nation!) - conquering of historical enemy nations
      Russian NO 5:  Poland + East Poland + Baltic States - 5 IPC (has to be owned by Russia, not an allied nation!) - conquering of historical enemy nations

      game effects?  who’s going to try and tell me that Russia does not need 10 IPC it can count on for the first few rounds of the game just to keep Germany from taking Moscow in the first 5-9 rounds?  I’d say with the changes limit it so that American, British, French and Anzac forces cannot enter any red territory or Russian controlled territory unless Stalingrad OR Leningrad OR Moscow are controlled by the Axis.

      i like these NO’s quite a lot!

      Darn, just when i step back on the forum after a long pause, i arrive in a ghost town? :P

      By the way, played the game twice (as Allies) and painfully defeated my opponents who are claiming that the game is not balanced. Are they correct?

    • RE: Lance Armstrong…

      @Gargantua:

      Can you blame someone for making his millions, and enjoying life (one he didn’t think he’d get to live)?  No.

      Well, since he took money from other people (by cheating), technically those people can blame him. Of course those other ones could have been cheaters as well, so it gets complicated…

      Personally i am not a fan, the Armstrong years provided for fairly boring Tour De Frances (except for the 2 first ones).

      About the life-changing books…

      I think there was one that had a huge impact on me and that was “Het boek der kampen”, roughly translated as “the book of concentration camps”.

      It was a highly illustrated book (photos, some documents, floor plans, etc) kinda like the Taschen books), and i have read it when i was 14 (for a school project).  It was full of very disturbing photos and anecdotes, and i can tell you that the book went into detail… (also that was, i think, the first time i was really exposed to the whole thing around concentration camps, i didn’t sleep well that week).

      I found out later that, in our library, that book had been removed from the collection. Too controversial perhaps?

    • RE: After first 3 rds (w/pics) *I'm Allies and Bro/Uncle are axis… HELP NEEDED

      It’s too late for it in this game, but as UK i like to take out Tobruk instead of a Taranto (Which feels like suicide to me, esp. with the extra german scrambler). Tobruk can be wiped out and it will cost most of your Suez fleet (CRU to SZ96, might cost the GIB fig as casualty) to Malta and DD to block in SZ99 keeping Cairo relatively safe in turn 1),  the AC can retreat to SZ80 to be joined by ships and air from India (which can strike turn 2), if India also sends 1 TRP and takes Persia, UK has a good set up to take Iraq turn 2 and secure the Middle East and Africa for a while.

      result: (relatively) secured Africa and Mid East
      downside: 1 less fighter to London, italian fleet can survive and join, a weaker Calcutta and less 1 money island

      Also, when germany goes Sealion, it can pay off to buy offensive with Russia instead of retreating and buying infantry.

      Is it Germany’s turn now?

      @MEGAEINSTEIN:

      It says there that combat move is simultaneous with one exceptio that is amphibious assault.

      It should say with two exceptios the other is tank blitzing

      I don’t see why that should also be an exception.
      Amph. assault takes place after sea-battle has taken place. After (or before) what does blitzing happen?

      YG,

      I take your comments to heart. Coward probably is the wrong word. I apologize for using it.

      I don’t know that selfish is the right word either though…?  I’m going to need to think on it.

      Maybe desperate is the word?

      @Canuck12:

      Yep, bored to . 3 people predictably throw away their lives.

      Whoo hoo!

      Though, if you make it all they way to the end without loosing interest, I think there is a scene where Jennifer Connelly gets all kinky with another girl…

      Got a few more to toss out there:

      Kill Bill 1
      Kill Bill 2

      And perhaps the most overrated movie of all time (IMHO):

      Fargo

      Could not really find anything enjoyable about that film, yet somehow it won 2 Oscars and is still revered as a masterpiece. Actually, a lot of the Cohen Brothers films are overrated, and some of Tarantino’s too. It seems like sometimes a director gets recognised as brilliant and then people cant seem to tell when something is crap.

      Coen, not Cohen.

      You didn’t even like the woodshredder scene? :D

      (now Fargo certainly isn’t their best)

      Also i disagree on Tarantino, i know it’s ‘bon ton’ to talk down on successful directors, but his stories, dialogues and set ups always entertain me.

      To be fair, i don’t listen to the voices out there, so i don’t really know what is hyped and what is not, i just like what i like (and dislike what i don’t)

    • RE: Basic Allies Strategy? I appreciated the info for Axis last time.

      What Gargantua says.

      Also:
      clear the Atlantic of Axis ships and don’t lose London.

      Let India help to take down Italy fast and secure Africa / Cairo (part of neutering italy).

      Cooperation (for ex. Australia can be useful teaming up with USA, even French units can be useful this way, finishing an action, opening a territory for an ally), think for all Allies combined.

      Edit: and be sure to spot every Axis mistake and take advantage of it.

      A better quesiton to ask, is did the Nazi`s experiment on trying to raise the dead and make re-animated soldiers…

      Wouldn’t surprised me if they had. Didn’t some also experiment with occultism?

      Maybe i’ve read too much Mignola comics :D

      But i suppose you mean ‘typical’ Jen Lopez films.

    • RE: U.S.A. strategy in the pacific

      1 (and 2). I find that ignoring Africa is a bad idea. You need a minimum of forces there, unless UK is doing so well it’s completely covered.

      If you send US infantry you can send along some air force that can help in some offensive moves, and in the long run they can still fly ahead to help in the Pacific. (a bomber can reach Congo in 1 turn, and it can even reach Australia in the next turn. That gives many options, and chances are that Japan doesn’t see that coming. I’ve had a succesful attack on SZ38 once (to take East Indies) where Japan didn’t realize my 2 or 3 bombers in Congo could make the difference.

      An Australian IC can help here too: US helps out in Africa, UK helps with the US fleet (but, Uus IC can be pretty risky).
      Anyhow, i think UK-USA cooperation is important here.

      3. Indeed, a Japan that knows how to manouver their fleet can be a pain…

      Well, it can get a pay off if it helps to obtain the money islands for UK (but that’s easier said than done usually)

    • RE: 1941 Factory in Australia.

      Can’t remember if it was 41 or 42 (i think 42) but i had some good experiences with an Australia IC one time that USA went after Japan (after Japan went all out for india), combining UK and US forces made it an interesting Pacific battle (with a.o. a UK AC filled with US figs). It was a long and mean battke and Allies still could not afford 1 mistake.

      I should add that i had built it turn 2 or 3 or so, not sure if it is smart to buy it right away, especially if Japan has many transport ships closeby…
