I have a expansion set in my closet that I bought in probably '94-'96 that starts around '40 and has rules for how and when Russia and US enter the war. When Germany takes France, you roll a die to determine whether French territories + troops are either Vichy or Free French, and whether the French Navy is Vichy, Free or scuttled. ( I think the Free French are played by the UK). Haven’t played it in years. I think it was by Xeno Games and called “The World at War”. Also had destroyers and some other cool changes.

RE: USSR First Move
The odds don’t favor Russia:
-
6 hit die vs. 6 hit die (4 units vs. 3) in Belo
-
18 hit die vs. 15 hit die (8 units vs. 6 units: but it should be 6 units for Russia as if you lose the ftrs it’s game over) in Ukr
-
13 hit die vs. 11 hit die (8 unit vs. 5 units) in W Rus
Instead of doing too much, it might be advisable to hit W Rus hard with 10 inf, 2 art, 3 arm, 2 ftr, and create deadzones all around and trade territories with Germany until the reinforcements arrive.
It’s a game 1 concession for Allies if 2 out 3 turn out bad. For allies, time favors them so draw out the game and let Germany rush you.
I agree. I offered it as an option instead of hitting Norway (High Risk, Little Reward) This at least is High Risk, High Reward. I actually prefer to hit WR and Ukraine.

RE: USSR First Move
I agree that Norway is an unexceptable risk and that leaving infantry in the East is a waste. Move them west asap. If you want a real agressive Russian open, do the triple:
3 inf, 1 tank to Belo
3 inf, 1 art, 2 tank, 2 figs to Ukarine
6 inf, 1 art, 1 tank to WRYou have a chance of one of these going real bad. I normally start with the WR, then Ukraine, then Belo, so I can better determine whether a retreat is necessary. So long as you take all 3, Germany will be on its heels. I would immediatly land UK forces in (forget the name, between karelia and moscow) and gear up to start landing significant forces in Norway on T2. US to Algeria on T2, and probably use Indian forces to retake Egypt if 2 units there or less.

RE: German force in BAL blocks UK transports?
This is the FAQ cited:
Can a transport move out of a potential combat situation in one sea zone into a friendly sea zone, load a unit, move to a third (also friendly) sea zone, and offload the land unit into hostile territory for an amphibious assault?
This move is legal. All of the transport’s activity takes place in the combat move. At the moment it moves out of the first sea zone, it’s not yet in combat (this is in fact what allows it to move at all), so it can load in another sea zone, then come back and assault. -
RE: German force in BAL blocks UK transports?
gnasape,
I think you missed the point of the question. UK doesnt want to assault WE, Germ, or EE and already has Norway & Karelia. Unloading to Norway and Karelia would be NC, so the movement out of SZ5 would not result in combat, and should not happen until NCM, after the transports participated in battle, meaning they cannot move again. That question is not answered by the FAQ you posted.

RE: Need HELP with J1 again, when UK/Russia is a pain.
What I would love to do if I was convinced that US was going pacific would be to hit China, Pearl, one fig to 47, BB and AC to 36 and Midway with Arm/Inf. Buy 2 bombers and sink whatever he puts in the water. You could feasibly bring 3 Bom, 4 figs, BB, AC, DD (maybe sub, but not in BB’s scenario). If US buys 2 AC, Fig (max defense), on LL you likely would still have BB, AC, 1/2 Figs to survive and retreat with on next turn as US only has one Bom that could get there.
IF US retakes Midway, he weakens his stack. And you can pick off his BB, possibly everything else on the West Coast.
UK Fleet has few places to run that are safe. If all he has is AC,DD and Sub - could attack with BB, AC, 2 Figs or wait one round and use the Figs in Asia.
I normally play dice, so I would probably opt for a safer strat, but this would be fun.

RE: Transport overbuilding: what, why, when, and how
I had a game a while back where I realized that if I had purchased 3 UK transports instead of the normal 8 land units, I could have hit Germ with 14 land units, BB and A/F and likely taken it.
Actually, the purchase would have probably prevented a push by Germany into the Caucases that turn unless he didn’t believe I was planning on hitting has capital

RE: KJF strategy US
How does USSR get FIC? UK can get it, but USSR?

RE: A new (maybe not) strategy KJF
SeaLion also open on G2 or G3 - both with no hope of liberation

RE: A new (maybe not) strategy KJF
Don’t like it
On J1, I purchase 3 trans, 1 arm.
Assuming LL,
Attack:
China, 2 inf, 1 fig with 5 inf, 1 fig - assuming i hit only once on first turn (1 hit, 1 die roll 2 or less) and US hits twice (same odds) - this degrades down to Japan with 2 inf and fig against a US fig (5/6 vs 4/6) - I dont care how this is resolved as long as I get the us fig. If Japan hits twice on first turn, takes 2-3 inf. left.
Bury, 6 inf. with BB support, 3 inf, arm, 3 figs - assuming Jap hits 3 first round (2 hits guaranteed, get either BB or 3/6 role hits), will loose no more than three inf first two rounds and if lone russian hits round 3, can decide whether to loose armor or fig.
Pearl (light)
AC, sub, Fig attacked with DD, sub, 2 figs, bom - AC at Wake - if taken with 2 losses, lose bom and leave DD or sub in Hawaii SZ, figs to carrier to prevent BB attacking in counter.
If you go through with Alaska - without naval defense - can hit J2 with BB, 3 inf, art, 2 tank, 2 figs and probably take with 2 armor, and may keep my figs. US could counter with 4 inf, bom, BB - but japan could set up counters against the exposed US navy and Alaska.
While brit fleet becomes a nuisance, lack of any real resistance in Africa/Med, probably leaves Germany free reign there (DD, 2 trans - taken on G2, Algeria retaken on G2 or G3 - rest of Africa taken on G3 - G4-5 - moving in to T-J, persia) On G3 - Figs/Bom can take out UK BB and trans. By G4 - push load of inf/tanks to Ukraine, with little worry about US/UK attacks into Western.

RE: German 1 purchase
in searching some old threads I came across a sold strategy to use your a/f purchase, though i think more than 2 figs is excessive. The corresponding combat move is to move the baltic fleet and the sz 8 sub to sz 7, SE BB/trans + 2 figs to Gibralter BB, fig + bom, libya w/bid units to egypt. Normal non-com of fig + bom in Libya, 2/3 figs in WE, one in EE, placement in germany. If UK comes after the baltic fleet, try to submerge subs (depending on number of UK hits) Germ has the advantage of knowing how many sub hits inflicted before it needs to declare causulties. Sub hits only go to ships, so if UK hits with BB, 2 tran, 2 figs, Bom, and the subs hit twice, those go to BB and a trans, if UK gets only 2 hits, you can keep all three subs for a chance to knock out the BB on second round of combat, or submerge (vulnerable to US BOm, fig if UK bought AC, and russian sub attack) and hit sz 7 with up to 8 figs, bom, subs, possible BB/tran)

RE: German 1 purchase
i understand your though process on this. I wonder if buying a bomber on G1 (can hit all important zones on G2 when the fighters can’t) and buying a fig on G2 and G3/G4 might accomplish your goals better?

RE: German 1 purchase
I think the big problem with the J1 IC (and there are plenty of threads about it on here) is that Japan needs to get to 6 transports as soon as possible to transport troops off of mainland and attack islands. If japan is left alone, those islands needs to fall to balance the ipc count and get Japan up to 50 ipcs to pump tanks to Russia.
I like to buy 3 on J1, and one each the next two rounds. thats 7 units plus a trans. J4 and J5 come the ics, and should be in the upper 40s by then, so u can get 4 inf, 4 tanks, ic (47ipc) on J4, ic, aa gun, mix of inf, art, tanks on J5. J6 and beyond, I like to concentrate on 10 armor, saving any extra ipcs for planes as they accumulate, as inf that are transported are 4 turns from the front.
Sail the fleets around the capes after taking Madacaskar/Afr. and NZ respectively, to merge and obstruct US Shuck.
-
RE: German Norweigian Stack
As my own follow-up, this assumes a fairly standard KGF game, and Japan co-ordinated moves to take islands, reinforce Africa and move its 2 BB groups around the capes and into the Atlantic around J7. So as pressure comes to bare in Moscow, the American fleet has another issue to deal with - any transport loss makes Europe much easier to hold.

German Norweigian Stack
I am working on an opening German Strategy and would like some feedback from the collective wisdom of this board concerning when it would be best to use and responses.
So far I have looked at it with a 9 bid, allowing a Tank and Art in Libya so Egypt can be taken with 3 tanks, art & inf, bomber (fighter probably too), BB, trans & inf, sub and 2 figs take the UK BB and Gibralter.
Purchase carrier and 8 inf. Here is where it gets tricky. If Karelia empty (fairly often) I can take 2 armor from EE, Inf and armor from Germany, and land 2 figs in Norway (4 inf, 3 arm, 2 figs), carrier plus one fig, WE has 5 inf, 3 arm, art, fig with one inf a peice in Karelia, Belorus, Ukraine, rest pushed to EE.
Thought process is to threaten fleet unification and force US/UK to over purchase expensive naval units, and slow shuck, particularly directly to Karelia-Novobrisk.
G2 purchases - inf + art (with left over ipcs) possible with a second trans in med if UK moved DD to SE and Med fleet going to be sitting there end of G2. Shuck troops up to Norweigh, probably have 3 figs there at end G2 - depending on purchases - possible brought Baltic fleet out one SZ to increase attack range if safe from attack - very possible double US/UK attacks.
G3-G4 start mixing in tanks in prep for eventual EE-Norway merge in Karelia On one turn, back to EE to pick up inf art/purchased round before (heavy tank purchase this round + round before Karelian merge) then push all available ground units to UKR. By this time, Japan should be sending 10 tanks/turn to the Russian front and have about 20 inf already pushed up there.
From the Round you push to UKR and on its all defense in Europe, so long as tanks can come back to EE and SE those territories can be left empty as long as a double UK/US landing is not feasible. May also use Germ/ and a one Jap bomber on Brit around this time to reduce its ability to add troops to the front - Should be producing 20 or less ipcs.
Thanks for any feedback. I recognize that this probably cant/should not be done if there is an inf in Karelia or Ukraine was decimated R1. looking more on the situation of the WR super stack.
I think the main benefit is keeping UK/US troops out of Europe longer and making certain that UK and not Russia eventually takes Norway.

RE: German 1 purchase
i still think in the game situation that you showed, Germany would be best served with a tank heavy purchase on G1 & G2 and really pushing the issue of an infantry depleted Russia. Combine that with an aggressive Japan (hate J1 IC purchase) and I think by Turn 4-5 there should be a stack of 20 german tanks in caucuses and a load of inf protecting Germany, with Japan pushing 10 tanks a round toward Moscow, with some SBR’s against Russia starting on G3, there should be enough to take Moscow by T6-7. You could do a Jap-Germ-Jap attack where Japan hits with Inf, Art, Tanks, Planes, and retreats before loosing Planes, Germany hits with its Tanks, a few Inf, and planes if available - may need for defense (as UK-US may have stopped the shuck to Karelia Novobrisk to get more troops to Europe) and then hit with Japan again 10 more armor and about 10 planes.

RE: German 1 purchase
You lost your game. When have you had luck with this strategy?
In response to this purchase, I would be very aggressive in a KGF strat, particularly with Russia, making sure Russia got the Norway IPC’s and then push forward. UK1 would include a carrier and maybe more defense in subsequent rounds depending on how long u maintained all those planes. But by UK 4-5 i would be moved into the Baltic so i can land 8 units in Karelia, while Russia moves into Ukr the next round. Russia would be impossible to attack for Germany. If Germany turtles, UK attacks full force into Western if possible or lands again in EEwith US support landing(12 Units and fighters), to follow for defense, Russian and Karelian Brits take EE. Then its 1, 2, 3 assault on Germany either the next or following round. Russia stops sending more troops after initial lurch and focuses on eastern defense (producing about 30 ipcs) US protecting persia route.

Triple A Login Issues
I just bought a new computer with windows Vista and downloaded the latest stable version of triple a. I have been playing some the past week on my old computer. I can not login to the lobby. I get the message: Could not Connect to Lobby : Connection Refused : no further information
Any thoughts? I turned off all Norton security settings. I’m going to try to re-download it
