    • RE: Axis & Allies and Zombies Q+A

@RogerCooper Ok, sorry for such a long delay but here are the answers to your questions.

      1. First you must understand what Blitzing is. Blitzing is when you, pass through an unoccupied enemy controlled territory on your way to a second combat as part of your 2nd combat move as a tank. So in short, no. If it is zombie controlled, no you have to stop and fight. If it is friendly units with zombies in the territory, then you can move through but it is not a Blitz.

      2. Yes, what a bonus!

      3. No, because the rule states that if you attack a zombie territory with only planes is for only 1 round.

I disagree on you regarding AA50 42 scenario’s balance, but that’s pretty far off topic and we can both agree that AA50 42 is more balanced than the likes of 42SE and G40, so I’m willing to drop the issue.

If you disagree with AA50 not being the most balanced of the games, please enlighten us why?

I am complete agreement with Squirecam…there is no OTB AA game that is more balanced…

      @robert:

I believe once a zombie territory is formed, the IPCs are dead. It now falls on you to clear the territory so as to collect those IPCs.
This is another way to keep forces fighting both each other and the zombies.

No if Zombies take a territory where there is nothing but Zombies it retains its IPC value and when the zombies have 25 IPC’s of territories, it is considered a Zombie Apocolypse and they win.

Also there are dice with a Zombie head on it as a 1 then there are the zombie dice when they attack.  They are special die with 2 attacker symbols and 1 defender symbol and then 3 blank sides.  the Zombies attack first each round in territories they are present with enemy units.

You purchase units at the end of the Turn ? What is the reason for that ?

You need to ask the game designer that one…

      @squirecam:

I’m not sure how balanced the game is. Taking out the zombies might make things worse.

You seem as upset that people might take out the zombies as others have been about putting in zombies. Let folks play with it as they see fit!  :-D

I am not upset about anything regarding the game.  Players can do what they want.  I am just offering my thoughts on my play of the game and what I experienced at ORIGINS.

      Guys,

I see your point about a game that needs to be introduced between 41 and 42…I will pass the word along.

And IMO, there is no game as balanced as AA50…!

And after playing 2 more games than Squirecam, I am not so sure the Axis are favored.  Here again, it all comes down to the level of players you are playing against.  Once we get enough games in, we will know more about the game balance…

As for the board, playing AA on the Zombie board might be the answer you guys are looking for, for a version between 41 and 42, and playing without the Zombies?  But need to look at that as well… :?

I am reading through the questions…interesting.  Are the Zombies optional?  Why would you buy it if they were?  Just play '42 and call it a day…

There’s no way this AAZ map would ever be confused for 1942’s map.

Ok, not sure if Squire mentioned this but the game comes with a way to add zombies to 1942 2nd Ed. if you like…?  I don’t believe there ever was an intention to confuse the AAZ map with '42…

      Well,

Not even two days later and you got a jump on it Squirecam!

I am reading through the questions…interesting.  Are the Zombies optional?  Why would you buy it if they were?  Just play '42 and call it a day…

I got 3 games in myself and had the chance to talk to the designer at length as well as others that played the game.

I am not sure how detailed Squirecam got, but it is simple.  The game is a normal AA game, somewhere between '41 and '42…at the start of each countries turn they turn over a Zombie card that directs them to do 2 things, one good and one in favor of the Zombies…then the Zombies attack where ever on the board, the turn continues on normally except for purchase units and placing units are at the end of the turn instead of the beginning…

Victory conditions for the game are the same for the Axis and Allies but the zombies are an independent entity and can win if they gain 25 IPC of controlled countries.

      That is it…

This is the closest I was able to get…

    • Axis & Allies at ORIGINS & GEN CON 2018

      To ALL,

Origins is just a week and half away, while GEN CON is 59 days away!

At this time, I am getting quite a few questions, mainly from first time convention goers regarding event registration.

The most important one is, You can not register for an event unless you or someone you know has purchased a badge in advance.  You may also purchase badges and tickets for friends and family members as long as they are part of your friends list through the registration process.

Origins: No need to worry about events selling out.  The only 2 events that have sold out are Black Orchestra and War Room.  The rest still have plenty of event tickets available for you to purchase.

      Origins Event Notes:
War at Sea League Tournament (all listings): these were listed incorrectly and there will be a slight change in event rules at the CON.  IKUSA 4955 event on Saturday is a Tournament and not listed as such.

Also at ORIGINS, I have been informed that the gaming Hall has moved since the renovation of the Convention Center.  Soon as I find out more details of where we will be located, I will pass it along…

GEN CON: This is not the case for GEN CON.  ALL, the Black Orchestra and War Room events sold out in day 1 of registration.  And there are a number of other events Sold Out as well such as: IKUSA, 1914, 1941, G42 and more… And many others are on the verge of selling out.  So, don’t delay in registering for events and check back on the GEN CON website for updates on specific events.

That is it for now.  Let me know if you have any questions. :?

    • RE: 2018 Axis & Allies Events

      Joe,

Sorry for such a long delay in responding and hope it is not too late.

In short, in both events, only 2 players teams…you can not have 3 to a side.  The only game where 3 is permitted is Global.

Please see Origins schedule on events times and any tournament info you may need.

Yes, unfortunately, that is what single elimination means.  However, many times in my events, if there is an odd number of player/teams, I will advance losers in rd. 1 to make the round 2 bracket event.  This is done randomly and players usually like it…

go to: headlesshorseman2.com for all the details

      Hope this helps.

    • 2018 Axis & Allies Events

      Greeting AA Gamer’s,

I know it has been awhile but now that the holidays are behind us, and a new year in full swing, I have begun to plan for this years AA events and need your feedback.

We will go in reverse order since, GEN CON event registration began yesterday and I am in the process of planning, as we speak for all things Axis & Allies and more.  At GEN CON in 2018, I would very much like to bring back the Master Invitational Tournament (AA50) and would also like to try and add a few more new events into the mix, like IKUSA and Black Orchestra by Game Salute(a Philip DuBarry game), while a few will go away due to lack of interest over the past few years.  So, please, let me know what you are interested in playing, what versions, and I will do my best to get that listed as events in the SmoreySwamp HQ.

As for Origins, I will be back at Origins as well, but Event Registration is not up for this CON.  Soon as I get something back I will start plugging away at the event schedule as well.

The Spring Gathering will happen again for its 16th year.  It will be held April 6 & 7.  Unfortunately, we still have not determined whether or not it will be held  in Northern KY or Toledo, Ohio.  I am still working on details on location and hope to have an answer by weeks end.

So, in short, let me know if you have any thoughts on anything AA or any other games you would like to see at any of the three events I run.

Hope all is well with everyone and hope to hear from you soon.

      Peace,

    • RE: GenCon 2013

      Greetings AA Gamers (latest Update!),

Three weeks, 23 days to GEN CON. I have received quite a lot of questions regarding events and specifics for tournament play.  Keep them coming if need be.

A few items of note: for first timers, any tournament is listed as a team tournament but in most cases, you may play solo if the numbers lend themselves to playing solo.  What that means is that I allocate spaces enough for everyone to play as a team if they like.  So, if there is a sell out and you want to play solo, you most likely will not be able to.  This scenario rarely happens so there is a good chance you will be able to play solo if you like.  I will do everything possible to accommodate anyone wanting to play solo.

Also on the event front.  Most if not ALL of my Tournament events are listed in the book/online as 2 hours events.  Please make note:  Almost ALL of the events I run last longer than 2 hours.  What is required of me from GEN CON is that I must list the minimum amount of time a player has to play the game before, either being eliminated or just gets up and goes to another event.  It is basically a guarantee of time that you may play a game if you like.  So, and in most cases, tournament events will run anywhere from 2 hours up to: 4, 5, 6 or even 8 hours.  ALL events do have a time limit.  You can go to the Swamp and see the event rules to get the exact maximum amount of time for each event.  (Ex. AA50 = 6 hours max. 1942 2nd Ed. = 5 hours max. 1914 = 6 hours max.)

Also, there has been a request for me to send out a request for hotel room space.  If you know of anyone that would know of a place that has room availability or if anyone has a room they wouldn’t mind sharing (cost as well), let me know and i will pass along the info to the people still looking for rooms.

There has also been a request of players wanting to find games on Wednesday night.  At this time, I am still not 100% sure of my plans but if you go to one of the forums, let others know what is going on for Wednesday.

Last, an update on events listings.  More 1941 Beginners Events have SOLD OUT.  Also, 1914 Games have now sold out as well as one of the War At Sea Battlefests.  And last, one of the 2 sessions for Commanders & Tactics is SOLD OUT.  This is my WWII low-luck designed game with no dice.  Check online for event listings…

If there are any questions regarding these or any other questions, feel free to give me a shout.

      Peace,

As promised, I have updated the Swamp with a brief listing of the Axis & Allies events that will run at GEN CON from my HQ.  Not all are listed but most of the important ones with Event # and times.

I will hopefully posting any event rules changes to any of the events within weeks end.

      @tacojohn:

I’m curious whether there are any A&A Miniatures retailers, sellers or dealers that are regular (frequent, recurring) exhibitors at GenCon?  There are a few individual capital ships i would like to pick up, but i don’t know whether any GC exhibitors sell individual, selected pieces.

There is one or two venders that still sale individual units.  Also, you can come to the AA HQ and I can guarntee that guys will have what you are looking for and be willing to trade or sell…

Well, unfortunately, G40 does not lend itself to tournament play.  We are finding out G42 doesn’t as well but is it the best alternative.

      1917 scenario?

Then you can forget RR and American entry rules.

America starts at war, but with a small army all still at home.

I like this rule that just lets America in the war, but then, there are others that are fighting it…

Heck, I propose that America should be able to land in Europe on Friendly territory and then force the Germans to attack them…

Greg, consider using the +1 to Naval Movement when begining the turn in a sea zone with a friendly naval base (ala 1940). This gets the Americans to France on turn 4 instead of turn 5.

      Kim

That is one of the rules changes so, all naval units will be moving at 3 and cruisers 4…

    • RE: Face-to-Face tournament rules

      @djensen:

This thread is only for those of you who have played at least 3 face-to-face games for at least 6 hours each. You’re certainly willing to chime in otherwise but I would like to keep the signal to noise ratio high, meaning lot’s of signal, no noise.

What are your thoughts on face-to-face tournament rules?

      Keep in mind the following:

      • You only have 6 hours to play.
      • Play starts with the game already set up and ready to go.
      • Just because the Central Powers take Moscow doesn’t mean the game is over.
      • What are the victory conditions at the end of 6 hours?
      • Face to face tournament play is very different. You’re playing to win in a condensed period of time with different or additional victory conditions. You do not have all day to compete a game.
      • Except for victory conditions, the rest of the rules and setup should remain the same.

      Dave,

Thanks for posting this.  With a new game there is always a challenge to come up with something in the way of a FTF tournament event at the CON’s  People will want to play and compete, Hence the reason for coming up with something.

And Yes, I have gone to Larry with this one.  The last time he hit a home run with the IPC victory chart for Revised.  He is currently working on something similar.

The only things I know for sure are that: Yes, 6 hours or less time frame.  Combat will NOT be changed in any way.  Meaning still only one round for land units.  No Russian Revolution will be used.  Also we are trying to find a way to get US into the game sooner.  This might help combat the longer game?

      Thanks again.
      Sincerely,
      Greg Smorey

      @TheVenocWarlord:

I’m going up to GenCon 2013. Before, I have always gone up to play in the Heroscape tournaments all 4 days.

This year, I am considering to play in an A&A tournament. However, unlike in Heroscape, I’m not a very good A& player. (25% win rate in A&A, as compared to 55% in Heroscape.)

So, any suggestions for me? I’m not familiar with how the A&A tournaments work up there. I’m considering playing the AA 1914 WWI or 1941, as they are newer and less complicated, respectively, which may help me out. I don’t know.

      Thanks for the help.

Suggestions for GEN CON events/Tournaments.  We will be running tournament events for: 1942 SE, AA50, 1914, 1941 & G42.  1941 might sound just right for you if you aren’t confident in your AA play… :?
