Agree…52 to 80 IPCs, buys a lot of navy. Japan cannot keep up.

Can the Russian fleet move to SZ99? Can other nations’ ships move into 100?
Any Vichy rules/options/rolling of dice to determine outcome?
Thanks…have it set up and ready to play.

As mentioned it isn’t difficult to starve the Japanese with convoy/sub every turn. The Japanese have to build destroyer(s) counter sucking up valuable IPCs. The US can start build 52 worth of subs until turn 3. Once it hits 72+, game over. The Japanese cannot hold high IPC islands, control the Chinese, take India and prevent an ANZAC build up. If Russia attacks even a little forget it. The Mongolian pact is not that important or much of a deterrent for either side. There needs to be some lessening of the American IPCs pre-war. 52 is too much.

RE: A simple fix for China…posted in House Rules
In 20+ games played the Chinese have yet to be 100% crushed. Once FEC joins and help keep Burma open, it is all over for the Japanese. The Japanese already get bogged down in China and have to keep all or most of their airforce there. It can take perhaps 5 turns to chase China to the edge of Russia.

RE: Axis vs Allies Win Ratiosposted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
If the Japanese don’t attack before 3 turns to keep the Americans out, then they cannot take the islands, India, etc. They are relegated to the Chinese endless whack-a-mole scenario that just burns up ground forces and does not really gain much IPC$ or ground. If they attack before turn 3 then they unleash 72+ IPCS while they are at 40ish? The Japanese can’t really build any airbases or ports early on…cannot afford it.
The Germans can’t do Sea Lion or much of anything, fend off the Russians, help the Italians, etc. One game I convoy robbed USA with constant subs but once learned that is easily defeated.
I think we are pretty experienced gamers. Played just about every Avalon Hill wargame there was when younger (more complicated than A&A), played original A&A, etc., 1942, now this. Person I play with is WW2 junkie, had a museum, can tell you what happened at every battle, knows the different piping on uniforms…you name it.
We both struggle as Axis…just don’t see it. American IPC is too much.

RE: 6.1 setup chartsposted in Global War
I would like to get the underlying Excel spreadsheet because this is well put together and I would like to make a 1936 setup with this as the basis. Unless there is already a 1936 in this format.
It looks like these are the base setups, in that there are no expansions, house rules, etc. These are out-of-box, yes?
Thank you.

RE: Axis vs Allies Win Ratiosposted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
America is overpowered. Axis almost always loose unless the Allies make a blunder (leave Hawaii open, forget to move, etc.). The game is much more forgiving for the Allies. Once America is at the war, the nearly 80 income per turn is unbeatable.
German cannot attack Russia, hold Norway, take out the British fleet (if they don’t sink it even worse), help Italy and potentially defend Normandy, Denmark, Belgium, etc from constant American/British landings (have to hold units in Europe vs Russian front).
The Japanese cannot take out China (whole game effort), take India and/or the islands, prevent ANZAC from building navy or re-enforcing Java, potentially defend against Russia in Manchuria/Korea, defend against convoy robbing, take Philippines.
Once America is in, it can wreak havoc in both maps or totally dominate in one.
If anything, the Axis need a bid. This is based on probably 20+ games, 2-player.

RE: Air Base & Naval Bases (HBG, Shapeways?)posted in Marketplace
I’m looking for something with a smaller footprint for naval bases/ports.
This could work. Little pricey but have requested perhaps more to an order to get the per unit price down.
If this was paired with an fuel tank, it could make for a good shipyard.

Yeah…cool alternative to the standard. Airbases, Factories and Ports on the map is pretty darn nice to have, however. Even if using pieces for them, it aids in the setup and if you miss one, it is easy to see. Maybe you could put some cool looking image for them.
Hope you will do one for HBG Global War?..

Which rules would you apply to this map? A&A Global 1940? HBG Global 1936?

RE: [1936] New player quick index project.posted in Global War
Yes, seems like everything is put together a bit haphazard/piecemeal from the documentation to the purchase of pieces. The website could use some revamping and organizing as well. It takes General Hand grenade posting videos on how to even build an army. I actually have been holding off on 1936 due to all this.

So all of these units are OOB or Expansions? Like Italy Amphib Lt. Armor….is that a house rule or a rule from HBG?
How will anyone ever keep that level of units straight.
Thanks…SJ

RE: Reference Sheet Income vs. Map Printed Territory Valueposted in Global War
I am holding off on buying. It just seems like it is too Beta. Also the map 1) it needs bases, factories, etc printed on the map (like Grasshopper 1940), 2) the IPC territory #s look way to small. I can imagine them getting covered very easily. Sounds like there might be another map released in 2019 (kinda far off).

RE: USA Sub Spam Counter?posted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
Bomber Harris - exactly…there isn’t enough Japanese IPC to build enough destroyers every turn to counter. The US simply can out produce. Even if it is just few turns it bogs Japan down and gives China, India and the ANZACs to build up a little defense or offense. The US is versatile enough that it can very quickly shift to the Atlantic if necessary.

RE: USA Sub Spam Counter?posted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
All good considerations. However, 80 IPC is after Japan has secured Asia, more like 40 or less early game. Massive USA sub spam (12 per turn) begins turn 4. By turn 4 (pre-war) there can already be 26 US subs spread across the Pacific then an additional 12 per turn (72 IPC/6) after that. The USA can outspend Japan on subs vs destroyers and drag Japan down into just buying destroyers early game or for most of the game. Not sure how Japan can get to 80 IPCs through conquest if they are buying destroyers every turn to make up for the losses. And if they don’t buy destroyers then their fleet and convoy IPCs will suffer. Also, to counter the subs Japan has to keep their aircraft on airbases/islands/etc. That prevents much action in China/India. Japan also has to keep the fleet in ports to rebuild BB and CVs or suffer true losses from sub attacks every turn. If the ANAZACs build subs too then it is relentless and paralyzing.

RE: USA Sub Spam Counter?posted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
China chews through that Japanese 11 or 12 IPCs every turn with a few Japanese causalities and keeps all or a good portion of the planes occupied in China. India can bounce their planes back and forth from China to SE Asia to assist the Chinese for defense (good portion of the critical parts of China 4 spaces away) and perhaps throw some troops in to boot. It is just a meat grinder and bottomless pit for the Japanese. Take French Indo, India, the islands…make up for that 11/12 $. Keep the ANZACs at bay and maybe mop up the 5pt bonus islands (Solomans, etc.). Keeping the US at bay, reducing threat from ANZACs and helping in Europe/Africa/Russia is better than endlessly feeding the Chinese whack-a-mole machine. Trying to hold Hong Kong and Shanghai…will expend every penny there is.
Right, focus on the Europe side, push into Russia, Africa, Middle East. Open to ideas on China though…just seems like it takes turn, after turn, after…to subdue them. One can churn through a lot of IPCs and at the expense of much else. By that time the Java, India, etc are reinforced, the ANZACs are on their way to a carrier or two, BB, etc. I propose, perhaps, hold the high value coastal territories a long as possible with some infantry and a fighter or two but don’t push inland. Control but do not try to eliminate the Chinese.

RE: USA Sub Spam Counter?posted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
With just $30 to $40 IPCs, Japan has to defeat USA sub-spam, take and hold large IPC islands, perhaps take Hawaii, Philippines, etc. and try to keep the Chinese and Burma road under control. Japan can buy a few destroyers (3 about consumes all $) but that means no factory in China for a while, fewer troops to combat the Chinese (god forbid they start building cannons), etc, etc. If the Russians keep a large infantry force near Korea then troops have to be dedicated there too just in case. The Mongolia factor is not much of a deterrent for the Russians. In the mean time, the AZNACs are massing, India is supporting the Chinese or re-taking South East Asia.
I think the best approach is to forget about China, let the Chinese have it, they cannot go anywhere. Hold the larger territories (3/4 IPC) for as long as possible but do not pump infantry in…just a money pit. Concentrate on the islands, India, ANZAC…maybe even East Africa/Middle East. Control sub-spam as best as possible.
