I’m interested in a slightly different opener as Japan, just not like what you’re suggesting. When I’ve done a J3 DOW I really haven’t liked it. I don’t think I really understand the merit in the J3 DOW unless Germany gets into the Med. Which doesn’t seem that great. J2 just weakens the J1 IMO although it does reduce the risk.
If you’re saying that I should build more navy and less army, the only way I can see that would work out is if you don’t put an IC on Kiangsu, Shantung or Manchuria. Otherwise, you need to defend the IC if China rushes after it, quite obviously. JDOW had a strategy that he’d build on FIC & Malaya and avoid building in China, perhaps for the same reasons. China was a massive pain in my bum in this game. So perhaps there is merit in these ideas but then not having that IC makes fighting China a lot more difficult. Certainly, Malaya is far more useful than Kiangsu if Japan is going after Australia.
One thing I’ve noticed in my games lately is that sometimes I’ve been failing to take Calcutta J5 for no particularly obvious reason. Perhaps this is just less focus on India allowing the stand there to be taken.
