But 1 DD stops you from doing that.

RE: USA Prioritiesposted in Axis & Allies 1942 2nd Edition
As I have seen many times now and which workes for me is an IC in China to help fighting the japanese on the mainland.
100% agree - in Sinkiang. Can use a few Soviet troops to help hold it particularly for the first turns. I also fly some fighters Alaska-Yakut-Sinkiang and retreat the Soviet soldier in the far east to Yakut - the combined arms force is not easy to take down.
I also reckon the US needs to make taking down the money islands (East Indies, Philippines and Borneo) a pretty high priority.
An Atlantic buy of a Carrier - even if it holds UK fighters is also pretty much a must US1.
I normally use the cruiser in the Pacific. So I’d say I tend to recommend about 80% Pacific. UK doesn’t have much money and a carrier makes a pretty big difference. Add a DD and some transports (for Africa and/or Norway) are also tactics that I like, but be careful to execute them properly. I find it doesn’t take much for the Axis to grab the advantage on this map.

@SS:
I don’t agree with any kind of charts or battle calculators being used for any of the games. :wink:
My usual opponent thinks like this but all it does is causes a lot of time to be wasted. Pretty annoying.

RE: Speed of Playposted in House Rules
We have one move we reckon speeds things up a fair bit (and makes it more enjoyable): Purchase & repair units doesn’t need to be finalised until the end of Combat Movement.
Often, you need to put the combat movement on the board to visualise it. This makes less and less difference the more I play but I would call it invaluable in my early days of A&A. Certainly less radical than some of the other suggestions here.
We only have 3 colours of dice and red is always the highest number. Although I can certainly see the merit in 4 colours with 15+ of each - and never deviating the number a given colour is rolling is also a plus. Two trays to allow offensive and defensive rolling simultaneously is pretty good too.
Another point is that combat movement which doesn’t involve rolling dice is generally allowed to be retrospective if forgotten (not if affected by something which has happened though). NCM can be allowed too if not affected by a declared combat move. This is open to interpretation. When I’ve played Triple-A, not being able to go back (without invoking edit mode) was a different experience.

RE: Attacking and Defending SZ6 (Surrounding Japan)posted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
There has to be a combat or an amphibious assault from that sea zone. The capital ships can remain outside the sea zone and move on the non combat if they didn’t start in the SZ, but that doesn’t work so well if there’s a big naval combat involved.

@Marshmallow:
You can’t take New Zealand on a J2 dow unless the sea zone off Queensland is empty
I guess the solution to this is to make it empty, you just can’t do it by J2. With peace, you can move a sizeable fleet in and a UK2 DOW requires them to run away or fight. The problem remains with the blocking which can still be achieved by running to SZ46.
I guess the question is what would you otherwise be doing with the Japanese fleet, assuming peace?

RE: Early take down of Sydneyposted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
I was thinking of hitting it J3. I guess the limitation with that is you only start bombing the IC J5.
wrt the IC in Qld, I would say that they might as well invest the extra 4 IPC and build a carrier.
I don’t know, I guess I’m just not a fan of using a transport’s time on New Guinea for no production and no NO, and without a base that can strat bomb Sydney. If you’re still keen on this idea, why not the Solomon’s? At least that is 1/4 of an NO for Japan and also blocks both NOs for ANZAC.
Without a DOW you can get to New Hebridies, but that seems to have all the same limitations except for being able to land J2 and keep peace.
-
RE: Early take down of Sydneyposted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
You know what’s a good place? New Zealand. A couple of bombers hitting their bases and IC would keep them on the ropes for a while. They’re also losing 2 production and one of the NOs.
-
RE: Early take down of Sydneyposted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
True, but I am assuming that Malaya will fall pretty quickly. And if you can take down the capital, who cares about NOs that they can’t collect or collect for one turn only?

@Young:
@Shin:
Has this ever worked for anyone? Not the specific strat MoW proposed - though I agree that’s the best way to go - but any taking of ANZAC before India. I’ve done it a few times, but I’ve lost the game every time.
I think it’s a lot like Sealion. Even when you win, you lose.
It’s the lack of progressive income that hurts Japan whether it’s a Sydney crush, or Calcutta crush. Any strategy that ignores the money islands for a quick capital is an unnecessary risk IMO. Even if you get a capital J3 or J4, all your initial resources have been spent taking it and your weak economy can’t bounce back, meanwhile your newly taken capital is extremely vulnerable to liberation.
I agree, ignoring the money islands is a fatal flaw. You can’t take the money islands without a DOW though. With a China crush and no Japanese DOW, I expect the UK to DOW UK2. Otherwise Yunnan is toast. That means you can attack the UK BB and ANZAC DD & Cruiser in SZ54 without involving the US ships if they are all there. So long as you position shipping to block the take down of Dutch New Guinea, I don’t see the need to spend a transport on that one. So I don’t like MMoW’s idea of sending a transport via Palau to take that.
I also think without a DOW J1, you need to buy an IC on China - Shantung J1. That doesn’t leave enough cash to buy two transport with loads. Assuming a UK2 DOW, you can’t take the money islands until J3 so you can buy probably two transports J2 for that goal.
Could a feint for this move be better than the actual move? I like the idea of blocking the take down of Dutch New Guinea with warships though. That normally isn’t done until at war because it’s better to claim the money islands. You could also block the UK from taking down Celebes UK2 if they declare war that turn.

@strategic:
Perhaps you could summarise it for us? Regarding Allies Strategy, I’ve got a few thoughts here: http://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?topic=37400.0
As for Axis strategy, pretty much the collective wisdom is J1 DOW, weaken then take down India via sea, G2/G3 DOW etc. Do those things not work for you?
Is there a reason why J1 is wisdom? I did 2 G4J4s (iirc) and 2 G1J1s. I built factories as japan including one in korea. I even lost japan in one of the games.
My eaatern front game is pitiful. I think i bought too many trans and land units as the us as opposed to pure naval buys.
Reflecting on my own games and what I’ve seen of others, I would say that a J1 DOW would work much better with an abandon China strategy. Otherwise it is probably better to weaken China first. Not sure if that’s the conventional wisdom though. Although I couldn’t bring myself to abandon China on J1.

Early take down of Sydneyposted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
Has anyone ever tried a strategy involving a J3 or later DOW and early (e.g. J3/J4/J5) attack on Sydney? You might be able to get into the capital with as little as 2-3 transports. I guess a totally turtling ANZAC could have 10 inf 1 art 2 AAA 3 ftr to defend and the ships could stop a bombardment, but in all probability some of those troops will have left the mainland on a transport, and the ships might not be present either.
ANZAC are a bit of a nuisance to Japan and it would be nice to get rid of them, but it is dubious that it is worth the investment.

Narvik believes that the Allies are not being played properly, Here is his comment in Reply #2… he goes on to explain himself in Reply #4.
He still hasn’t explained what moves it is that he believes make the Allies strong.

RE: USA 3rd turn DOW & factoriesposted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
Triple-A is wrong. The factories are upgraded with the DOW which occurs after mobilise units.

Had a look here: http://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?topic=37118.0;topicseen
Was there a reason Germany continued beyond the first round in SZ111? If you retreat, your battleship is repaired G2 when theirs is still damaged - you will retreat to a naval base but they don’t have one there.
DOW G1 is not normally advised. Those 3 tanks in Gr Sth Germany are better used assisting in France.

RE: Axis in Icelandposted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
How about Scotland as an unsinkable aircraft carrier for the Axis? At least it’s two turns away from the US Navy’s production. With Strategic bombing on London it’s difficult for the UK to produce too many units there.
I guess once you’re able to consolidate in Scotland, London is in a lot of danger anyway.

….and that explain why so many People claim that Axis is favored in this game …
What? I don’t understand the correlation between US NOs and game balance
I think he’s being sarcastic and saying that the claim that Axis are favoured isn’t true. If I’m understand him right, I’m curious to know what moves he thinks make Allies strong?

RE: Attacking and Defending SZ6 (Surrounding Japan)posted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
Good points. However if the US is already there and Korea has been reclaimed, then they would have to move their carriers out of SZ6 on the combat move to avoid the Kamikaze and then they wouldn’t be able to move back in on the non combat move, so the SZ would become considerably weaker. You can achieve a similar effect by buying a destroyer in SZ6 after the carrier(s) have moved in, provoking a combat with the carriers or forcing a withdrawal.
I knew there had to be some loophole which I was missing.
@wittmann:
You have another one in SZ16, blocking Subs getting there, naturally.
That only blocks the via Hawaii/Midway routes. You can also go via SZ15 or SZ8. Note the via Hawaii/Midway route can be threatened by a force in the Carolines.

Attacking and Defending SZ6 (Surrounding Japan)posted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
If SZ6 is attacked by the USN, such as with an amphibious assault, the Japanese can kamikaze strike on any loaded aircraft carriers. Doesn’t necessarily sink the planes unless they have nowhere else to land, but they probably won’t. If there are two, three strikes each is probably good enough but more can be wasteful. You only need to hit the carrier once to deny the landing field. Problem is that you have to decide whether to scramble before the kamikaze can be resolved.
Is the standard move to leave a destroyer in SZ6 with 3 fighters on the airbase in Japan? If the destroyer is attacked by no surface ships, just planes and subs, then that holds back the aircraft carriers and reduces the difficulty of dislodging the USN from SZ6 significantly. I’m thinking that a few subs with the destroyer would get a surprise strike but only at a one so it doesn’t seem a good investment to defend it more strongly than that.

RE: Strategic Bombing on Calcuttaposted in Axis & Allies Global 1940
Tried countering this move as axis with a J1 DOW and J1&J2 Strat bomber buy (+2TT J1). Turned out the Philippines assault failed and the fighter survived to be the 4th interceptor, but I still did the strat bombing raid J3 with 3 bombers, figuring the damage I would do would hurt the Allies more than losing a bomber. Turned out all got through and shot one interceptor down, but more importantly, instead of repairing the damage, the Allies built an extra IC on West India which I could only reach from Shan State, which I hadn’t claimed yet.
4th interceptor would normally come ANZAC2 via Malaya IMO, but I think the alternate IC is a pretty radical strategy. Not sure of the advantage of it to be honest.
Certainly had trouble containing China while focusing so much on India.
