Awesome. Glad you have come around @gamerman01. So one league but 3 standings.

OOB is less popular so may need playoffs decided based on top 4? Perhaps a rider to allow that to be decided at the end of the year? Will it still be 8 game minimum in all games? Probably fine in BM and P2V. Should it be BM4 (14 IPC bombers) as standard? House rules can blur the lines but I guess it is pretty unlikely that it won’t be clear what the nearest game is.

Well, I don’t think that was intentional. You raise a valid issue in that if Rio de Oro should not connect to French West Africa it should be drawn to show that, although I would be very surprised if a connection was actually intended. There is no connection in G40 or BM.

Classic had the Sahara as being completely passable. G40 had it completely impassable. I don’t think anyone would argue for a middle ground of being able to go around it at the western end as well as the populated eastern end.

Regarding SZ38+SZ132, you raise some valid points here but the effect on gameplay is very dramatic and it was never discussed. Also later discussion fell on deaf ears. If such a dramatic change is contemplated I think Japan should be beefed in some other ways. I think it just makes Japan too weak and makes it a 3 turn sail from Tokyo to Calcutta when previously it could be done in two if a naval base were built.

    • RE: What are the pros and cons of no DOW on US by Japan

Claiming all the money islands J2 will likely require sacrificing transports, unless the USN are hanging out in Hawaii or north of there. I like Malaya & Celebes J2 because it puts UK_Pac’s income down sooner. I guess you can convoy it but ANZAC still gets NO income. Shan State generally needs to be hit because there’s a few troops to kill. Getting Celebes out of the way early means it doesn’t cause inconvenience later.

Maybe I’m more skilled as a tactic and not as a strategy?

I think the opposite is important. ie. Tactics trump strategy. Patton said something like: great tactics can make a mediocre strategy sing but without the right tactics an excellent strategy can fail.

So I guess you still need a decent strategy, perhaps look at what other players do as Axis. Allies need to react a lot.

Thx a lot for your answers.
So Russian units can also not support the UK and will be ignored in the UK Europe territory (e.g. Persia) if Japan attacks the Brits there? Will the Soviets stay there when JPN occupies Persia (Japan is not at war with Soviet Union)?

Found s.th. here, is this answer correct?
"however, the russians can be at war with germany, and take iran, and the japanese cant hit it without declaring war on ussr.

or UK can take iran, and ussr can put units there, and japan cant hit it without war

or ussr can take iran, and uk can put units there, and japan cant hit it without declaring on the british."

      https://www.axisandallies.org/forums/topic/19698/could-japan-destroy-russian-units-without-a-dow/3?_=1684745344877

Not sure I completely understand but if there are Soviet units in Persia when anyone attacks, they must first DOW on USSR. If they do not DOW they cannot attack. This is in the rules somewhere. It is different at sea though.

USSR also need to be at war in Europe to move into Persia.

      Do you still have questions?

      Let’s be absurd!

Suspending disbelief for a moment, say we all agreed with Taamvan, what would your strategy be? We might call this imaginary game save Moscow! or the Great patriotic war. That is your sole responsibility for 5 turns. Would Germany be able to take Moscow by turn 5 or 6?

Not a chance. If the allies put everything into Moscow, the Axis can’t take it that soon by any stretch.

    • RE: League General Discussion Thread

This discussion made me go back to see what I did with a +80 bid in a low luck G40 game with oysteilo a few years back. In fact I omitted subs in 111 & 106 for only one in 110. Guess one in 106 would have been worthwhile because it would have allowed the counter attack UK1 (had other things to do and no Atlantic objective in G40). If I had placed one in 111 though it would have been wasted because the Scottish fighter was enough to deter the attack there, although there may still be a case because a different player might make a different decision. Possibly.

    • RE: Global 1940 French Rebalance

I can now announce version 2 of the French Rebalance (renamed from Parisian Rebalance)

      • All French territories become capturable by USA/UK/Anzac if they don’t go Vichy.
      • Sub in sz62
      • French troop in French Indo China
      • One infantry in Siam upgraded to an artillery
      • Chinese Burma Road objective restored to 6PUs
      • Several BM changes now turned off by default (Guerrillas, objectives for Carolines, NW Africa for USA, Okinawa&Iwo Jima for Japan and the UK objective requiring 2 of Sardinia, Sicily, Greece, Rome, USSR bonus for provoking a Japanese DOW on it)
      • Anzac declaring war on Japan doesn’t put Britain at war with Japan

I would think it likely now that Vichy is activated by the Axis nearly always but UK fights them for it.

The air is probably better used in stacking Burma if there’s been a J1 DOW. Although some may say that the J3 Calcutta crush is a waste of time and the allies should just allow it. I’m not convinced of that one.

I don’t get the Yunnan thing. As China and/or the English I’m going to whack that every time and succeed. Is it bloodletting?

Without significant bid units, it’s absolutely worth hitting. You could strip an inf (in a J1 scenario) or the artillery (J2+ scenario) if you’re concerned about losing too many ground units. Most players wouldn’t though because the desire to take the territory is so high. Once you take the territory, China needs to move units in to retake it, normally at least 2. You can then hit these units J2 in most games. If you don’t take the territory, China can evacuate and also buy artillery, which will totally be able to hit anything moving in J2. And collect the NO.

I don’t get why would even think about not attacking Yunnan without a significant stack there?

For France, if the US or UK have captured Normandy and/or Southern France, and Paris is retaken, the US/UK retain control of these territories and can keep and building there?

Yes indeed. That if you took Paris you couldn’t keep building in these territories was a real disincentive to retaking them.

Perhaps only award the 5IPCs if no German units are in an originally Soviet territory? BM simply bans moving into the Soviet territories if not at war.

    • RE: League General Discussion Thread

For anyone who is interested, league games played per year are:
      2013 - 581
      2014 - 520
      2015 - 462
      2016 - 648
      2017 - 404
      2018 - 451
      2019 - 367
      2020 - 365
      2021 - 339
      2022 - 218+

Seems like when Balanced Mod came out in 2016 there was a big rush. I can’t really explain why the games played dropped off so much this year. Some big players have left the league, had enough of A&A?

I personally got a bit grumpy about the Paris liberation disincentive, and worse (IMO) the incentive to leave Normandy French. Although I am not sure if others got so irritated by this other than Gargantua.

dave rarely buys mechs. he buys strats, then tanks, then more strats. With the can opener and G1, its an R5 attack the allies cant stop.

      attack 110 only
rush the russian fleet and wreck it so it cant block
move up 1 strip per turn
hes on you G5 with a 80%+ whether you counterattack or not, and regardless of what you built

I also suggest mark movels VC card…it makes the game fun and well contested until a clear turn (i think its 10 turns). i really dont like house rules, even my own, but after 199 games, its clear that all the versions are quite imbalanced (except dday)

This report confuses me. UK should be able to stop a G5 Moscow crush with the combination of UK planes bought in Persia arriving UK4, starting UK planes from the med and/or India.

Yes it has. Less players, harder to get games, some give up in frustration.

I’ve been in a couple of games with the UK sz 92 stack instead of Taranto raid and it hasn’t gone great for UK. 2 out of 3 times Italy was left with planes and even a wounded battleship, and the benefit of 2 transports instead of 1. Small sample size so far.

Too right small sample size. Note then when you attacked my SZ92 stack you had ~35% of victory and kept 2 units. Draw was about 18%. Italians hit with every roll (low luck) and the Brits didn’t.

Still AldoRaine would have kept his fighters on the ground G1 and I scrambled. That makes a pretty big difference. I think not scrambling G1 is a big sacrificed to execute this strategy.

I do like scrambling G1, when both fleets are attacked. You can often kill 4 planes for losing 3, and I value the Luftwaffe more than the RAF.

The downside is you lose the TT SZ106 and there’s no J1 DOW, and also you lose the Scottish fighter you have no real moves UK1. So if you’re dead set on the SZ92 stack you probably can’t scramble to SZ110.
