    • RE: Pacific 1940 2nd Edition

I just saw Anzacs have a Sentinel. AAAAARRRGH!!! None were used in combat and the Priest Kangaroo is called a Ram Kangaroo. With a Ram kangaroo the Canucks could have their own Tanks with a scratchbuilt turret even though RAMs never went into combat as gun tanks. Stands to reason why germans went to war with Panthers and Tigers in 1940+

Not complaining about the sculpts, as I love them, but rather their anachronistic use.
And if you don’t like the Japanese type 1 personnel carrier, make it into an SWS with rocket launchers for mech arty.
The next evolutionary step is to make arty that travelled with the other mech forces as mobile battlegroups.
These new pieces would be great for BoTB.

      HBG to the rescue

A somua s35 could be made from all the old British Shermans. That’s my plan. and the Japanese tank will be made into a Chi-ha late variant as the sculpt is some weird chi ha top with Hago running gear.

Oh and that UK Mech inf, is a good basis for a M3 Lee/Grant which the Anzacs used a lot of in the pacific after the Brits moved on to the Shermans.

    • RE: FMG, HBG, OOB Pieces Comparison

HBG vehicles are proportional to the size of the actual vehicles.
This explains why the OOB panthers are larger than HBG’s panzer III.
Ive compared HBG and OOB vehicles against the very accurate 1/285 GHQ vehicles and have come to this conclusion.
the Sherman is around 1/285 but is longer because the running gear is too large. Everthing else is proportional
except the gun due to the needs of durability as game pieces.
The older Panthers are also 1/285 but the newer ones are more around 1/300.
The Japanese is way out of scale.
The Matilda is 1/285, the T-34 is 1/285, the mechanized units are 1/300. The Tiger is 1/300
Haven’t measured the scale of the ships or planes.
The battleships have grown a bit larger except the Yamato which is WAY underscale. It is the only battleship which has
retained it’s size from the second generation AA games and the more modern AA games. The Yamato was THE largest battleship ever built.

      @CWO:

      @wittmann:

Are things  being set up for a new A&A game? Dare we hope!

Well, at least there’s potential for people to create their own house rules for a Kursk game.  Axistiger13 makes a good point about the American pieces: compared with the other four main countries, the U.S. has always placed more demands on the tackle boxes in which I stope my sculpts.  Britain is a close second because it’s been in every game other than Guadalcanal, so that adds up to quite a lot of sculpts.  Germany has been in fewer games than Britain, and Japan in fewer games that Germany, but they each tend to be given lots of pieces in games like the original Europe A&A and Pacific A&A in which there’s just one Axis country.  Russia has the fewest pieces of all: it’s been in the fewest number of games, and never as the sole Allied power.  My collection could use more T-34s and fewer Shermans.

You could use some of the Shermans and Matildas as lend lease re-enforcement provided you paint them to match russia.
I know what you mean by the sheer numbers of shermans as I have practically all the A&A games and some even double or more.
I’ve been modifying mine into an early Sherman and Firefly for the UK while the US will get a standard 75, 76 and an HVSS 76 tank.
I have been toying with converting some shermans into either Lee or Grant M3s. Already have loads of M3 stuarts from HBG.

Back on the tiger topic, I’ve finished a platoon of orange Tigers into the E version and will be making the other 5 into H versions making 2 fairly distinct Tigers. The early version with the Feifel air cleaners while the H version will have the cleaner rear deck and rearranged turret top with maybe an attempt at zimmeret.

    • RE: Piece count

Look at the level of detail of all the new pieces. The planes have scribed in panel lines and wheel wells.
The ships have port holes and have more pronounced islands.
I personally think they upped the quality in the 1941 sculpts as they are all new to make up for the lack in numbers.
The new pieces in 1942 are also in the same category as those in 1941. In fact all the new molds are a step above the older molds brought over.
I think the decision to thicken up some details may be a retrograde step since it makes the pieces look cartoony but with the benefit of durability.
I am spoiled by the detail level of GHQ 1/285 scale pieces whose level of detail I am trying to get close to for my A&A pieces.
I prefer the workability of plastic and the weight savings versus lead/pewter and the longer term durability of plastic for play where physics is concerned.

The 1941 game pieces are the perfect adjunct to the pieces in 1942 SE and should be used together for a richer visual experience.
My suggestion is to get both games. You’ll have more than enough pieces (using the chips for multiples) and you’l have a higher level of detail.

Use them as late war pieces when you use up the OOTB pieces or as elites.

      I’ve seen the term JoboSchrek.
PanzerSchrek was “tank Terror” even though it referred to the german copy of the Bazooka.

    • RE: Hasbro losses in Games and Puzzle Revenue

I think I might be floating the A&A games and it’s supporting industries for the last month.
Already pre-ordered multipul copies of both 1940 reprints and am in the process of getting a sealed copy of every A&A board game for my collection.
Failing that, I will have mint opened games.
I don’t think I want the AA50, though as that is a bit steep for even an A&A crazy like me, nor am I in the market for the NOVA ancestor.
All this from someone who has only ever played the Hasbro version. However my “play” copies will all have painted and accurized models.
That alone will keep me enjoying the collection aspect more than the gaming aspect.

WOTC might have missed the boat by going the 1/100 route instead of making board game compatible modules as “tactical” upgrades for the strategic A&A board games. They could have booted game sales by selling “booster” army packs or piece packs as re-enforcements for the games or modules. The value add in getting the games being that you could only get the boards, rules and charts by buying the game.

You can see it in the secondary sales of games and game components.

    • RE: Not enough units.. How many more?

So they say new Anzacs and new transports in the 1940SE games.
I am guessing the new transports for the commonwealth are Bren/Universal Carriers.
New anzacs may be just infantry in digger hats since they used mostly US/British weapons in the active theaters of war much like how the Canadians used US/British weapons instead of their home brew RAM tanks.
The Anzacs better not get Sentinels as Crusaders are more useful.
Then again, who knows? The Japanese got Tigers and 190s. The Kikka was practically the Me262 jet and would have been somewhat common to both the Germans and Japanese late in the war.

All I Know is by the time the new Globals come out you could practically outfit each country with a country specific piece for each weapon and some even get multiple types.

If I didn’t have the collection I have now, I would buy 1942,1941, and 1942SE.
You would have more than enough pieces to play each game and have country specific pieces.
Who would ever have a gaming day where you would be playing all 3 simultaneously?
All 3 would also cost less than what the old 1940 global game went for at retail prices and you would have basically 2 different game types to play with.

One last thing I want to add. Even though this 1941 game has few pieces, it more than makes up for it in the quality of the individual pieces. It truly is worth getting just for the parts alone or as a great pairing for 1942SE.
Both games get you all the pieces you will ever need to play either one.

At the risk of sounding like a McDonalds commercial, I’m lovin’ it

Wittmann was one of the highest scoring Tank aces reknowned for destroying an armored column in Villers Bocage.
Surprisingly he got a lot of killed russian tanks as a StuG commander.
I personally dislike Panthers and Tigers for 1941 and 1942 as these tanks were mid to late war tanks.
The blitzkreig and Barbarossa were won mostly by the Pz III and later the Pz IV.
In fact my copies will be using HBG Pz IIIs with Panthers as elites and Tigers as SS.

    • RE: Axis biased

You have to give it to Larry for knowing his History.
The ebb and flow of A&A follow the ebb and flow of WW2.
Germany was hampered by the threat of the opening of a third front in Europe using up valuable divisions that could have been used in Russia.
Not until 1943 did the Russians have to fight the war in something besides survival mode.
Not many people know but the Russians and Japanese fought a short War prior to the invasion of Poland.
The Russians used massed tanks to destroy the Japanese at Khalkin Gol.
The Japanese left the Bear alone after that as the demands of the war against the US was more than Japan could handle against industrial juggernauts.
A&A is definitely a good game to introduce the military history of WW2 at the strategic level.

    • RE: Tiger tanks molded in the Japanese Colour.

I got mine from CoolStuffInc shipped after the 27th. Maybe the early preview copies sold early didn’t have the finalized rulebooks.
This kinda brings me back to the old Milton Bradley original where it clearly shows a Painted GHQ sherman as one of the pieces.
I was so disappointed at not finding pieces shown on the box that I have been making my own pieces ever since and only bought the new versions sporadically til now.

My rulebook looks like the one from this thread

page 22 through 28 of my 1941 rulebook clearly show the unit silhouettes in their country color while some of the movement illustrations do show older pieces.

Yep, someone got their rulebooks mixed up. The 1941 rulebook is reflective of the pieces as is the 1942 rulebook.

Historically, it should be as the Axis were on the rise and practically unstoppable (with the exception of the new Roman Empire). Eventually it will shift to the Allies as the US production capacity becomes overwhelming.
The US practically provided more tanks than All of the tanks Germany built during the whole war. Trucks, AFVs and Airplanes for Lend lease fed the other allies to continue fighting.
