    • RE: Med Indefensible for the Axis?

      @domicron:

      Take Gibraltar and close the Mediterranean?

      NO.  HOW???  Gibraltar can be taken from both SZ 91 and 92.  The Allies can have anywhere from 3-10 transports in range of Gibraltar from just about any SZ with a NB in the Atlantic.  The Axis has at most 2-3 in range in the Med.  Unless you can somehow have more troops in Gibraltar than the Allies can transport in at any given time (which I don’t see happening unless Germany takes Spain and invades overland), the Allies will always have control of Gibraltar.  What’s even worse is that the Allies can replace their trans and troops at will, whereas Italy doesn’t have enough money to bother trying.

      However, a lot of games I’ve seen lately, the Allies ignore Italy and the Med entirely and let the Brits do all the work from their minor IC in S. Africa.  Seems to work fairly well.  It may not even come up in a game.

    • Med Indefensible for the Axis?

      Ok, so the E40 map has brought a lot of changes with it, and that includes a lot more SZs in the Med.  I hope I can make an argument that might lead to Italy getting an Axis bid in future games.  Italy only gets 10 IPCs which is even less than in Anniversary since there are a lot more territories and the whole board is worth more now.  The only way the Axis can hold the Med in Global is basically hope that the Allies simply ignore it, which isn’t a valid tactic.

      In older Axis and Allies games, there used to be just 3 SZs separating Gibraltar from the Suez, but now there’s a lot more, and it’s a lot of trouble to cover them all.  Italy’s capital is really indefensible by the sea, as it’s SPLIT now between 2 SZs, and the Allies can go around to either side from the connecting SZ below.  It seems really stupid for Italy to buy all naval units then, as it would have to have roughly double the number of the Allies invading fleet to defend attacks from both directions.  Not going to happen.  The fleet is probably just going to be sacrificed in piecemeal attacks, even with the maybe 30 IPCs Italy can get with both NOs at its height.

      Japan is of little use (or at least in the games I’ve seen thus far) in sending a carrier group to support the Italians in the Med from India, which was relatively easy to do in the older games.  With the extra SZs, and lack of naval bases (at least until Japan takes India), it probably isn’t going to happen in Global 40.  Why do Italian players still spend all their efforts and time in these games taking Trans-Jordan for the Suez control is beyond me.  It seems to be taken to PREVENT UK ships from spilling into the Med from the Red Sea, rather than opening the path for the Japs as in older games.

      Gibraltar is also a huge issue, as many have seen, since it lets the US be in striking range of Italy in two turns.  The UK and the US can reinforce it at will, whereas the Axis has a hell of a time even getting transports out there.  There’s not even a real reason for the Axis to send transports out there since Morocco/Algeria is worth 2 IPCs, and the Allies, by contrast, can get at nearly everything in the Med from OUTSIDE in SZ 91. Italy cannot block in SZ 92 off Gibraltar either as they cannot build fleet units into it.

      With all these reasons, it seems the best tactic for Italy is to either forgo a major fleet at all or supply a small fleet that just transports units to Africa with a bare minimum of cover, which runs at the first chance of danger from Allied navy.  Building a big Italian fleet in the Med is just a recipe for disaster, and you’d be better off served by stacking the capital for the inevitable US/UK showdown several turns down the line.  Just hope that the forces already in Africa roll well  :-D.

    • RE: G1 options

      @Tavenier:

      My copy arrived yesterday evening.

      I tried some moves to see how it would work out. In AAAE I always sank the Brits on G1. This time there are too many ships to sink in G1. But I tried to get the most out of it and used all my subs, ships and airforce to attack at sea. It was very succesful, because it cost the Brits and French about 100 IPC worth of ships and me only 2 subs and a damaged battleship.

      So far so good.

      But my attack on France really missed the punch my airforce can deliver. I took 2 inf and 1 art to attack Normandy and all the rest was used on Paris. I got 7x1, 2x2 and 5x3, so I should on average score about 4.4 hits. The Anglo-French alliance have 9x2, 2x3 and 1x4, so should score about 4.7 hits. Even though the Germans lose a couple of ‘ones’ and the French losing ‘twos’, it still is a close call and chances the French can hold out are pretty big.

      What naval units should be destroyed while leaving enough airpower for France?

      What are your thought?

      Ah, you fell for the Normandy clincher!  It seems so insignificant, sending an art and a few inf away to grab those extra two IPCs on G1…  DON’T DO IT!!!  That extra art and inf put into France can be the edge to turn your close defeat for the capital into a victory!

      Also, if nothing else, N. Italy is somehow touching the Paris capital and can usually finish it off with ease.

      @Panz3r:

      But destroy the english fleet doesn’t mean that the British can not do anything
      they can build infantries

      first english turn 7 inf 2 art

      second turn 7 inf 2 art

      2 inf e 3 fight there are in uk from the first turn

      german on third turn (the first turn available to make operation sea lion) is strong enough to destroy

      16 inf 4 art 3fighter?

      more…

      on third turn the american player is on the sea zone 103 ready to land unit…

      and the russian are undistrurbed.

      don’t know… sorry but i still don’t see how  :mrgreen:

      You may find my rebuttal here, sir.  http://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?topic=20136.0

      Germany is already sitting pretty on Round 9 with a decent sized fleet off Gibraltar, threatening the US on the East coast and the American fleet that took out Italy’s fleet in the Med off Greece.  Russia and Germany are about to come to major blows, but Germany was able to build enough forces in time to make a fight of it.  It’s going to be an epic battle in Poland come the next 2 turns.

      That being said, Sealion is only viable in Europe40!  Don’t EVER try it out in a Global game; you might want to check this thread out here:  http://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?topic=20303.0.  The USA can bring its Pacific fleet to bear for an massed re-take attack on London US4!  Plus it gets even more ridiculous IPCs once war is declared, 82 vs. 65!  Germany doesn’t have a prayer.

      True, there were some lucky dice in my Europe game, but it still can be done without too much trouble.  The hard part is getting those tanks off of London while reinforcing it with infantry.

    • RE: Dusting off Operation:Hollywood..Will kill America first be an option like inAAR

      Not going to happen in this game, sadly.

      America has such a ungodly huge income even without its war dec bonus that its completely unfeasible for either the Japs or Germans to contemplate.  The Atlantic is also bigger now (at least 2 turns to cross), and its much more difficult for Italy to get into Gibraltar with the UK having a carrier group in the ocean there (not to mention that the UK goes first and usually does a Taranto raid with that carrier group, crippling Italy’s fleet UK1…)

    • RE: 8 hours of a Global game (Axis seems too hard..again)

      @Wakrob:

      As per my play with A&A1940 Europe, I feel Axis has it very rough in the Global version.

      Our game-
      G3 takes London after obliterating Brit navel presence in the first two turns.  I hadnt realized how many planes could get there.
      Japan chooses not to go to war with anyone but Russia until J3.
      Italians rolled bad in almost every engagement.

      I think slow rolling Japan might have been a bad idea.  The money it prevented US from getting seemed more than offset by the easy Dutch/ANZAC National Obj bonus’ the allis got.  And Italians never had much luck, Cairo never fell.
      But you’d think taking 35 IPC’s from London and pretty much locking UK out of the game on the western hemisphere should be an easy win.
      Germany staled out in Russia after taking Leningrad.  US eventually staged 7 full transports, 2 full Carriers and a Battleship off Gibralter.  Germans 4 Fighters and 4 Tact Fighers guarding London decided to strike first at the fleet and failed.  US takes back London next turn easily.  Axis player concedes at 1:30am in the morning after about 7 turns.
      German had held London for about 4 turns.

      My opinion stands that Axis have it very hard in this A&A version.

      Wak

      ARGH!!!  You had the game man, you had it!  If Germany can knock England out of the war it is very difficult for the Allies to come back from it.  Attacking the US navy from England is difficult if not impossible since they can build twice the amount of IPCs you’re making every turn in the Atlantic.  You had 8 planes in England, all you had to do was shuck enough infantry there to defend it and you’re golden.  Let the Americans be the ones sinking tons of money into transports to retake England while you’re already sitting pretty with your own transports and tons of inf from W. Germany to reinforce.  With 8 planes as defense those 7 loaded transports would have had no chance if you’d had a stack of 10+ infantry present.

      I’m guessing sorry-bitch-ass Italy was in danger so you felt you had to attack in the Atlantic to save them.  It was easier to me to defend against the US Gibraltar threat by reinforcing Italy with my own inf/tanks from W. Germany fora few turns until they get enough infantry made to hold the capital.

      @hobo:

      @larrymarx:

      Has anyone considered a primarily naval Germany?

      The idea struck me when I was considering what to do once Germany takes London.

      Uhh If Germany takes London it’s also game over.  Another part of the game I don’t believe has been play tested enough with the initial setup.  It doesn’t take too much luck for Germany to take out UK since it has literally 3 turns to do so.

      It’s not game over. US can easily liberate London unless Germany ignores Russia

      Agreed.  It most definitely is NOT over.  Look at my Sealion thread in the PBF games with jim10.

    • RE: USSR Invasion

      Use your Baltic fleet as much as possible to land troops in Finland if you’re not attempting a Sealion.  Invade the hell out of Leningrad when you can.  Knock out isolated stacks of infantry if possible.  Push the Reds back towards Moscow and use your ability to transport troops closer to the front/build in Leningrad to corner them.  Don’t overextend yourself.  Don’t commit to a major final battle in Moscow if you can wait a couple more turns to bring up reinforcements for a decisive win later.

    • RE: Re: Statistical odds of AA guns + standard deviations associated low/high sample

      @Imperious:

      People: i already posted the solution. This stops any credible attack against the main German fleet. Transports protected.

      Attack SZ 106 with 1 sub ( UK has 1 DD) 2 vs. 2. 40.6% to 39.5%

      Attack SZ 109 1 fighter vs. 1 DD 3 vs. 2. 48.9% to 26% ( both die at 25.1%)

      Attack SZ 110 2 subs, 1 tactical, 1 fighter, 1 bomber vs. 1 BB, 1 DD ( should win)
      99.5%

      Attack SZ 111 2 subs, 1 tactical, 1 Fighter, vs. 1 BB, 1 CA ( should win)
      85.7%

      Attack SZ 112 1 BB, 1 tactical, 1 Fighter vs 2 CA ( should win hit on BB)
      89%

      Notes:
      The cruiser makes my BB and CV with 2 fighters protected against 3 of his fighters attacking on UK1

      His navy is blocked entirely against SZ 112. I have 2 subs each on each side to block a DD from coming in.

      I could fix SZ 109 attack and replace with bomber, and put the fighter with the BB attack. This cuts out the DD in SZ 109 from coming to the other side with 3 fighters against my main fleet.

      The first attack IS a coin flip, but the others are not. I expect to lose 2-3 subs and a BB hit. If i roll down i expect to lose a fighter or bomber in SZ 109

      One CA blocks at SZ 104 the subs block either DD.

      If i lose both subs in one battle, i think i can still win against 3 fighters and DD against a 2 hit CV BB and 2 fighters. But its set up so that i should just lose one SS in each combat.

      This both protects my main fleet that is coming out, causes UK to avoid attacking Italian fleet, Gives Germany a chance for Sealion, kills most of UK’s fleet, and kills the balance of UK’s fleet on the next turn if they choose to attack my CA on UK1.

      Do the subs really block the destroyers?  Is there a special rule that prevents the destroyers from moving past sea zones with subs in them?  Thought they could be ignored in AA40.

      You are only also going up against the UK with 3 transports.  So that means two tanks, 3 inf and an arty are on the boats G2.  ALL your airforce is required to survive to try to win the G2 Sealion.  That’s 7 aircraft + 6 land units against 11, possibly 13 land units and 3-4 planes defending.  Not a chance.

      IF you build 8-9 transports on G2, you have a pretty good chance of taking London on G3.  But since this is even MORE unviable in Global40 than in Europe40 (with an 82 IPC USA incoming), I’d say Sealion is out of the equation unless the UK player just doesn’t know what he’s doing.

      THREE successful invasions of the UK in one game?  That’s insane.  The US must have been asleep at the switch.  Probably the same thing with the British player.

      Kudos to the German player for having the biggest naval balls in history.  Britain is a very expensive proposition.

      It would be nice if you could actually play the scenario where Germany and Russia remain best buds for the whole game.  It probably would actually have happened like that in real life had Hitler not been such a backstabbing treacherous douchebag.

      Be difficult to see how the US and the UK could have handled a German/Soviet/Italian Axis in Europe and the Middle East.  I don’t see how the Japanese would have formed an alliance with the US considering their opposing views about China, but in A and A land, anything is possible.

    • RE: Spinning Globe Avatars

      Get a program like 3DStudioMax or DAZ or Maya or something off of Bittorrent or some other fileshare program.  Install.  Make a sphere of x height that looks good with your .jpg of whatever Global map you skin it with (or mesh it with, depending on the program used.  Think 3dmax calls them meshes.)  Animate the sphere by telling it to rotate at a set speed and have the camera record it at a set distance away.  Practice with it till you get the map resolution, speed, and file size you want.

      If you want to be uber cool you can animate little ships and exploding planes and whatnot over it while its rotating but it might look kinda gay.

    • RE: I got beat by the Axis

      calvinhobbesliker and I just finished our first Global game on the PBFs, we kinda dropped the ball in Europe on Round 6 (my fault, with a terrible Normandy/Brittany build as the US).  We’re hoping that our second game with the revised Japan setup (19 planes at start vs. 28 original P40, many ship locations have changed, etc.) it will be a bit more fair.

      We did kill the hell out of the Japanese air force stack in southeast asia, only to still lose to a combined German/Japanese push into Russia by Round 7, with hardly any Allied units in range to do anything to stop it.  My last-minute attack on Germany’s Baltic fleet failed miserably, with awful all-sixes dice from a massive SBmr attack from England.  The Allies were unable to send any units through Norway to come to Russia’s aid, and the Germans continued fortifying their land troops through Lenningrad.

      I’m hoping the new Japanese setup will let the US build more heavy for Europe this time around.  With the Allied successes in Africa against Italy, the US didn’t really attack Germany enough to help Britain out on the coast.  Hoping to avoid that this time and get Germany to pull some of its inf wall back to Berlin.

      Yes, Turkey does touch Greece (very tiny bit, but it does.)  Even though there is a canal/strait right through the middle of it, it’s considered one land territory.

      IF Germany attacks all 3 major True Neutrals on G3-4 at the same time they have a decent chance at wiping out all the true neutrals in range of being activated in Europe, and gaining +7/8 IPCs.  Check out my G3 True Neutral Crush strategy, I’ll bump it.

      Thats insane to produce a game with such paltry sessions behind it. I hope thats not correct, but i read this from a playtester.

      Considering that we’re up to 55 pages of posts on a PBF game of G40, three times for playtesting is not surprising.  GAME IS TOO DAMN LONG.  WHEN WILL TRIPLEA COME OUT WITH A MAP FOR SAVE GAMES???

      Considering there is a LOT more money available on the board, more territories are present, and there’s also more money in NOs to be made, Tanks weren’t really that much effected by the change.

      Germany is making 50-60 IPCs, plenty of money in there for tanks.
      Russia is like 30-40ish.
      UK builds boats anyways and has a split income; some argument on cost of tanks could be made for Indian forces vs. Japanese.
      Italy maybe builds a few tanks to help out against Russia, 20-30 IPCs is still ok for tank builds.
      US doesn’t need to worry about money at all.  12 arm a turn is no problem.
