    • RE: TripleA still up and running! Many players online.

Thanks for the email links Veqryn, sent emails off to all those bastards at WoTC and Hasbro.  The amount of apathy on these forums is astonishing; Hasbro threatens a DMCA takedown to a freely hosted fanservice of one of their lesser sold products, and the majority of people just flame it into oblivion and even suggest that the program sucked anyway and deserved to be shut down…  When Hasbro comes after your AABattlemap and Mapview programs next, don’t expect much support from me…

Let’s get everyone on the same page here, dammit!  Refuse to buy any Hasbro products and let them know that what they are doing is infuriating their fan base by clamping down on fan-made freeware!  If they had made a superior product that was worthy of  attention that’d be one thing, but threatening copyright infringement on a freeware game that has a total of 300 users worldwide is ridiculous.  Most of you out there apparently don’t even like TripleA, even though somehow it was popular enough to have been shut down.

Definitely NOT buying AA1942 after Hasbro has completely eliminated any chance of me having fun with the Axis and Allies franchise anymore.  People in town don’t play the boardgame, they can’t stay around for 12 hours to play one game, plus you can’t save those games anyway to pick up later.  TripleA was the easiest way for me to find matches in their online lobby and ran generally flawlessly for me.  THEY HAD A WORKING VERSION OF AA50 THAT I WANTED TO USE FOR THE TECH TOURNEY.  So F*** you, Hasbro, never buying one of your products again.

Hopefully we’ll get somewhere with this, Veqryn, as we apparently are the only ones who give a rats ass.  I just can’t understand the total lack of support from the Axis and Allies Community, as they apparently will use ANY thread to pointlessly debate about Technology rules while Hasbro gleefully pulls the rug out from under them.

BTW everyone: Hasbro = Avalon Hill = Wizards of the Coast.  Boycott their products.  One gigantic gaming company of FAIL.  TripleA probably SOLD them more copies of the board game than any of the sh*tty clients they came up with, their AA CD-ROM game was a REAL p.o.s., it crashed after round 5 every time.  My guess is they’re planning on releasing a new computer game (that’s GUARANTEED to be a horrible failure, their game designers won’t have the YEARS of experience TripleA devs have had in foreseeing conflicts/problems and will take years of patching to catch up) and that they’re nipping all the competition (however free and good for them it might be) in the bud.  Why they couldn’t have co-opted/commended the devs for making their game for them already is anyone’s guess.

Man, Avalon Hill SOLD OUT of copies of AA50 like 1 year ago, they CAN’T be hurting for money with the AA franchise.  Just a sheer money grab, plain and simple.  Never buying any of their products again.

WHAT. THE. F*CK.  Can we still play networked games on this thing with the latest client?  Cause I don’t think they can shut down that.

Seriously?  HASBRO???  They made ONE super shtty AA CD-ROM game like 10 years ago and are shutting down ALL of TripleA because of it?  I cry bullsht.  AA50 is Avalon Games anyway, is the unstable AA50 client gonna be able to work???

There’s like maybe 50 people online on TripleA at any given time, anyways!  Holy sh*t!  Like these people would be playing a game at home!  The ONLY way you’re going to be playing (and finishing!) a 12 hour Axis and Allies game is ONLINE!

Where’s a link to a petition or something?  This is ridiculous, as there are MANY of the games available on the TripleA client that Hasbro has NO rights too!  I could see them trying to get Classic or Revised taken out but the whole client is just FOOLISH.

Hell, how am I gonna participate in the ladder now, wanted to play matches over TripleA…

Edit:  BTW, may I add I have CLASSIC, REVISED, AND AA50 SITTING IN MY CLOSET AT HOME.  GATHERING DUST.  TRIPLEA WAS THE EASIEST WAY TO FIND OPPONENTS AND GAMES.  THANKS A LOT HASBRO.  NEVER BUYING ONE OF YOUR PRODUCTS AGAIN.

    • RE: Triple a

Those other games suck, though.  Actually, Pact of Steel is pretty fun.  You can see where Larry got the idea for AA50 from it; it’s like a cross between Revised and 1942 AA50.  It’s pretty much the only game too where germany can get away with a fleet in the baltic.

Hopefully they’ll get the AA50 unstable lobby up again to where we can find opponents to play.  TripleA currently hosting only revised games blows.

    • RE: Building Italian fleet - is there a point?

Italian builds I’ve played with usually involved fighters and carriers once I got the med NO’s.  If you can get Japan through the Suez and Germany to build a factory in France, by I3 the joint Axis fleet is a factor the Allies should have stopped 2 turns ago.  If playing Allies I go for the Italian fleet asap so as to protect Africa’s ipcs/deny italy its NOs.  If Allies take the med, then italy is pretty much reduced to all inf builds, which is still fun to use retaking France every now and then.

    • RE: Beginner looking for feedback on his G1

Yes, creeping deth and Octopus, the true strategy to an effective German Axis player is to hold territory and starve Russia/Britain to death with Japan and Italy’s help.  You can use the starting units you begin the game with to go willy nilly all over the place ganking ipcs, but you’ll never hold anything if you don’t play with a permanent stack.  Which means inf.  Lots and lots of inf, perhaps some tanks later on in the game to finish things if Japan is taking too long.  Your goal as Germany is to provide the defensive buffer that Russia gradually loses its forces against and pushes the Russkies back to the capital.  If you can sandwich Russia between German stacks in the Ukraine/Karelia and Italian/Japanese stacks in the Caus, you have essentially won the game if the Allies cannot use the Russian units to counterattack either of them.  With SBRs and their limited production of 6, Russia’s fall is guaranteed within a few turns.

Twigley, germany CAN accomplish all those objectives, it just takes some picking and choosing.  You can’t go after all of that at once without consequences, so don’t.  I personally enjoy hammering the British fleet at the game opening with everything I’ve got, taking out ALL the fleet except the destroyer/transport off canada.  Why do I do this G1?  The fleet is easier to pick off at the beginning of the game before it can develop into a monster stack you cannot ever possibly attack later.  I reinforce Libya with the units from France.  Egypt you can take G2 or I2, depending whether Britain reinforces it or abandons it.  Karelia will HAVE to be abandoned later G2-3 if you push inf stacks towards it; Russia simply doesn’t have the production there to hold it.  Free NO, without risking any fighters to AA.  If Russia attempts to hold it; you’ve just destroyed 1/3 to 1/2 their total military force that they desperately need to hold the capital later.

My current strategy G1 is to build an IC in France and rest inf.  With that IC you can build a total of 16 inf every turn; which is great for defense, plus you can drop fleet in the Mediterranean to help out Italy.  If italy can capture most of Africa, and Japan takes out all of Britain’s Pacific/Asian colonies, its very easy to maintain a joint German/Italian/Japanese fleet stack in the Med that the now truncated 15 ipc Britain/American fleets can’t take.  If you hold the center of the board with the majority of ipcs, its just a matter of time before the Allies throw in the towel.

Why don’t you try having your friends roll the dice for each other?  Or putting them into a cup and dumping them out on the floor?  In any matter, good Axis and Allies players will avoid the all-or-nothing-last-ditch-attack that loses the game for them.  Bad dice usually just means a change of strategy for a few turns.  Though I have seen some real corkers out there (try playing germany with a 4 HB SBR run from the US and costing 35 IPCs!)

      eaglex72,

Have you tried out TripleA?  It’s a computerized form of axis and allies.  Saves a lot of time for setup and is easier to play online.

Triple A build 1.0.3.4 lobby should be working fine.  Was on last night, just connect anonymously.  I usually have to use Hamachi to get around router issues.

ALWAYS play your games on tripleA if you can, btw, its so much faster than PBEM.  Even if you have to start over (if it crashes), but I haven’t seen any crashes so far.

    • RE: Looking for Axis ideas against my clan's new Allies campaign

I’m going to try out building some serious navy in the Med and see what happens. I think it will put a serious hurt on the allies landing efforts, I’m just worried about holding off a strong Russian play.

Hehe, nice.  Just don’t go overboard with it, (haha naval combat overboard haha), if you’re worried about Russia.  I ended up building most of my naval units with 25ish ipc italy (sub fodder) and adding them to the stack each turn, and completely turtling with Germany, building around 15-16 inf a turn with the france IC.  Germany can only really afford one or two turns of naval/IC production before Russia starts getting scary.

      joh01749:

Have you tried stacking Axis navies in the med?  If you build a german complex on france you can build carriers in mediterranean with germany and italy and have japan’s fleet come through the suez J3.  3+ carriers on one SZ is hard for any of the allied players to chew through by themselves, and it prevents allies from helping out russia overmuch.  If the allies ignore the fleet you’ve basically got africa and asia in the bag, Britain and US are stuck with invading either WE or over land through north africa, just turtle with the rest of your moves with germany and the game should finish itself.

Kinda risky with Russia bearing down but its won me more than one game.  Allies lose a lot of options (and fleet) if you don’t concede the oceans to them.

    • RE: Kill UK first?

      @Corbeau:

For the UK strat, it’s very doable but you need a baltic carrier and France IC on G1. This leaves you with a weak Eastern front so it’s a race before Russia becomes too dangerous. If Japan and Italy are correctly played however, you can stall russians long enough to gain control of Atlantic. Anyways, I’ll post details later.

This.  If you’re serious about building atlantic fleet as germany, IC in france is a must G1.  Building a baltic carrier helps but you don’t really have the planes yet to reinforce it, plus its usually STUCK in the baltic SZ for the rest of the game.  It distracts britain and protects Germany, but the Allies can ignore it if they want to and go after Africa.  Building some inf with the remainder IPCs G1 is what I usually do.  You can generally build a naval stack in the med G2 and get reinforcements from italy, and hopefully japan by turn 3, if axis can take out egypt and run through the suez in time.  If Axis can grab most of africa and hold onto it for a few turns, the fleet was generally worth it.  Keep the Allies out of the med, and Russia is a cakewalk!

Gah.  Weren’t they saying a lot of this stuff for the AA50 release?  Less than a year later they have to churn out yet another Axis and Allies…  Considering the last one was $100 for a damn board game, and supposed to be the end-all-to-be-all, why are they compelled to make another Revised version?  Dunno if the Revised player base is gonna like the new naval rules used in AA50 either, not to mention the player order.

    • RE: Building Italian fleet - is there a point?

If KGF is the strategy used by the allies (and often is), building a fleet for the med should be a priority for the axis, period.  Japan should definitely be able to spare a carrier, planes, bs and whatever else it can funnel through the suez if America isn’t building anything in the pacific.  If italy doesn’t add to its fleet every turn though, that japanese fleet won’t have enough punch to do much by round 3 when it gets there.  Building a carrier either round 2 or 3 can effectively double the size of the fleet at that juncture, making it much more survivable.

Also, a waiting carrier for german or japanese planes to drop onto is awesome, since only America can intervene in 41’ between Axis turns (Italy (carrier I2), America, Germany (drops fighters G3), Russia (no units in Med), Japan (also drops fighters, adds fleet J3) .  Usually only a few American units can reach the fleet by round 2, so an attack by America on a full powered italian fleet may be reconsidered, or just lose them badly needed units. The best part is that you get a combined fleet off italy by the middle of round 3.

At this point, the allies have the same problem you usually have with attacking combined fleets; one power doesn’t have enough units to make it worth fighting high value battles and risk losing all their supporting pieces (i.e. fighters and subs are expendable, while bombers, transports and carriers are not).  You can’t attack them, they can’t attack you.  Usually a stacking war develops in SZ 12 with the allies bringing everything but the kitchen sink… And italy can hold the fort by buying a few subs a turn or blocking with a destroyer at gibraltar, japan can bring up new naval units as needed too.

And finally, the best part about it is that if it DOES get sunk and was just a huge waste of time, it was just that, a diversion.  By now it is Round 5 or 6 and Germany is waltzing through Russia, and Japan is unstoppable with 70+ IPCs.  If the allies ignore it, force them to pay attention by threatening the supply route from America to Europe. Hope this helps.

    • RE: G1 naval build?

      Woodstock:

Have you tried out TripleA?  They just finished the AA50 map, and it works pretty good.  It’s a great way to practice figuring out the game without setting up the damn board.  There’s usually always players on in the lobby, and most are helpful in getting the program to work.

If you’re playing your first game against an exp Russian player, I’d advise NOT buying a carrier(s) G1.  The baltic strat worked well some of the time in Revised but in AA50 the UK’s early ipc count of 41 plus NOs means you’re being outbought with ships they can afford to lose for rounds B1-3.  You CAN hold the baltic with a double carrier buy, but then you’re tying down your entire air force, which won’t work with the Russians incoming.  You need those 3s and 4s fighting the Reds or holding France.

What I like to do is build at least 1 fighter or bomber a turn for defense/trading of land territories and gradually bring the number of fighters up over the course of the game.  Fighters have the mobility to attack/defend several zones away and moreover aren’t waiting around to be blown up in the baltic, plus they’re cheaper.  Once the allies get complacent with their fleets in thinking their boat stacks are unassailable and start building all land units for shucking to europe you can surprise them with the 8-10 fighters + bombers you’ve been saving up.

The extra fighters are also helpful if the Japanese can get through the Suez or around S. America and attack the atlantic fleets (usually around round 4-5, and also assuming opponent is KGF).  I’ve found if the italians build 1-2 carriers in the med, merge with the japanese fleets and have germ/jap fighters land on them, its VERY hard for the allies to beat a combined axis naval stack.  Britain and America usually have spread out their naval buys to half transports/land units and will have to respond by stacking themselves or sacrificing their fleet.  By the time they are done rebuilding (if you haven’t outright taken over the atlantic) Russia should be finished.

Good luck on your game Fri.
