    • RE: Gibraltar

Allies have too much in range or potentially in range of SZ 13 for the Italians to take Gib with 1 inf and leave the trans undefended (or even defended).  Losing that initial starting transport round 1 or round 2 really sucks for Italy as it doesn’t get hardly any money to start with, and the money you DO get you desperately need to spend on planes or ships to give your med fleet some defense, if you’re planning on making a run for the Italian NOs.

Really, if the Allies are gunning all out for Italy Rounds 1 and 2 with an Operation Torch strat, its difficult if not next to impossible for Italy to retain its fleet without German or Japanese help.  Building a fighter round1 and a carrier rounds 2,3,4… helps me out a lot, have german or japanese fighters land on the carrier(s) that you build in the future, and it makes the allies think twice about attacking the stack.  If you can get 1/2 of the japanse fleet to commit to rolling through the suez into the med you can seize the initiative and actually take the fight to the US and UK … works pretty well, and secures your NOs and the middle of the board for the rest of the game.  Just don’t pour too much into it or the Russians will eat you alive.

no no no sgt Blitz, please

When France was occupied, the GDP (gross domestic production) was halfed. So this 6 IPC territory actually should give the german occupier 3 IPC in income a turn. Remember that any occupied territory is scorced down from the fighting and the population is killed. And the stuff you loot is usually obsolete, so you cant put it into good use. The germans gave the obsolete Char-B tanks to the Rumenians becase they were too ugly.

So, by your logic, this game as a reflection of war is entirely pointless since you only LOSE money by taking over enemy territories, factories and capitals?  So, France, England, and Russia would serve no point by being occupied and we should just let the game consist of pointlessly wasting resources on building army pieces that are never used and just threaten nearby stacks?

Sounds a lot like the Cold War.  Let’s just rename the game to Aldertag’s Cold War, 1940-2009.  Why are you even playing Axis and Allies anyway?  There’s the reason WWII was our last world war, and hopefully remains so.

    • RE: What if I dont want to do it larrys way?

Hmmm, historically, Germany had just signed a non-aggression treaty with the Soviet Union in Aug 1939, in which they partitioned Poland.  The West viewed this as a stab-in-the-back since Hitler’s Germany was supposed to be a bulwark of Western civilization against the Communists in Russia.  A lot of Western politicians (Neville Chamberlain, specifically) had also been willing to back Hitler through his aggressive tactics in acquiring the Rhineland, Austria and Czechoslovakia from 1936-1938 since he had been such a loud and fierce opponent of the Communists.   A lot of the decision to declare war by the Western Powers on Germany if it invaded Poland was based on the weariness of playing the back and forth both sides game between the East and West.  Plus obviously Hitler could not be trusted.

Though, Germany DID backstab the Reds in Jun 1941, only 2 years after signing the non-aggression pact, so invading in 1940 probably wouldn’t be that much different…  Wonder how Larry is going to put in the peace treaty between the Reds and Germany at game start?  Or if its possible to reswitch alliances between the East to West again and be at peace with France and UK at beginning?

Not sure if its possible for France and UK to “undeclare” war or something…  since they already were technically at war.

We do know that nobody got rich from taking Berlin, the only thing they got was the rocket tech and some pretty high occupation expenses for the next 20 years. When taking Paris and Rome, the attacker got even less, its more like they had to pay when conquering this capitals, lol.

No, no, no… The Germans had the French pay occupation costs during WWII… It was retribution for the war reparations from WWI, and they were a LOT harsher to the occupied France 1940-44.  Germany did NOT have to invest a lot more into France to get anything out of it; the southern half of the country was willing to collaborate, many of the factories were taken over intact, and the Germans also confiscated just about any/all war material, commercial trucks, and aviation equipment for Operation Barbarossa against Russia the following year.

Germany also used a lot of tanks produced in Czechoslovakia for the invasion of Poland and Russia, and a lot of the Ukranians were willing to work with them in Russia.

If France falls, Germany gets to loot the defeated player’s IPCs, period.  Same should be true for the other allied capitals.  If there’s a rule for building in other faction owned factories with the defeated player collecting IPCs from their remaining territories, I’m all for that.

      @Imperious:

I think you should lose only the ability to collect income if you lose your LAST factory. If you have 2 factories and the enemy takes one, you can build at the other. The enemy takes only the value of the territory.

So when you lose your capital you lose nothing but a place to build from and the direct IPC from the territory. What is messed up is the enemy takes all your money…even saved up income.

NO… just, no…  If Britain fell to the Nazis, that should be at LEAST a whole turns worth of production… There was Buckingham Palace, countless arts and treasures, PLUS England was the industrial heartland of the Empire.  Maybe the turn afterwards the defeated power could collect income on whatever territories remained and build from other factories, but the psychological defeat of losing a capital should last for at least a turn.

Also, if Britain did fall, I don’t see them building battleships and carriers in Canada or India in significant numbers to come back and reclaim the capital… It’d be up to the US player to be responsible for liberating England.

This game needs a government in exile rule, specially for France and UK. It would be cool if a Sea Lion would not be a instant axis win, fighting the brits from Canada, Australia or such. And a Free France would be also cool (some troops for Africa without having to do trannie chains)

Yas, that’d be a good idea.  Pretty sure the brits would of carried on from Canada and Australia, and there definitely were a lot of Free French forces in Africa and England during the war.

If a second round of attack is required against France then this will prove to be benificial for the Soviets. You see they (the Russians) will in no position to either defend or attack in any meaningful way. The Germans, at the same time, will also be in no position to attack Russia. As for the Russians the game set up reflects the results of their fiasco in Finland. Stalin’s purging of the army and simple old out dated military doctrine. The German military disposition on their Eastern border will reflect the friendly status that existed between Russia and Germany when these black and red fascist were good buddies. Again, this is not to say that the Russians are not well represented on the board. They are, but when the time comes it will be clear that they suffer from too many places to defend and too dispersed an army to go on the offensive against Germany. As a Russian player you can certainly attack if you want to but it would be pure suicide. In effect, Russia will spend its first 2 or 3 turns purchasing and position its armies. Each turn that goes by the Russians get stronger and a good Russian player will skillfully be busy preparing for this inevitable German on slot. How and what the German and Russian players do during these critical opening turns will set the tone for what will look and feel like Barbarossa June 22, 1941. The player making the best moves, having the best luck, and making the best decisions on how and where to place new units as well as existing units will determine the eventual out come of the “Patriotic War”.

Bleh.  Russia threatening Germany in 1940 Europe as a counter is laughable.  Round 1 Germany builds fleet for Sealion.  Round 1 Russia builds all infantry or builds all armor to take advantage of Ger naval build.  Round 2 Germany builds all inf and armor, takes Britain, knocks UK out of game, ganks capital IPCs.  Ger possibly finishes France but isn’t main objective.  All inf and armor build in Germany.  Round 2 Russia builds all tanks to take advantage of Ger, but offensive is stopped in Poland due to Ger building before Russia’s turn.  Round 3 Germany has a HUGE ton of cash from taking UK, possibly taking France Round 2.  Ger builds inf in Britain to hold from US counterattack, rest is inf and armor to throw against the Reds, France falls Round 3, Ger counterattacks against the Reds in Eastern Europe.  With two Allied capitals in hand Ger is poised to easily crush the Soviets in Eastern Europe/threaten America with leftover fleet from Sealion and base in England.  Game over.  Would be cool to try a lot of fast Round 3 decisive games like this.

I’m sure Larry will have countermeasures put into the game to stop this.  Like if Britain actually falls then the US has the prerogative to enter the war early in Fall 1940 instead of Dec 1941, so Germany then has a new front in England to defend.  Or maybe the Ger submarines attacking the convoy supply lines to Britain have a chance to trigger an American declaration of war if they kill too much shipping or something.

    • RE: France and what should be done about it.

There was this expansion kit we had to Classic A+A back in the day that had land mine units (1 IPC ea) you could place on borders of territories you owned… Every inf crossing into the territory across that border had to roll a die, 1 out of 6 was a kill and one mine was used up.  It was like limited AA shots on land units but did wonders for defending France from invasions from Britain, one round we got like 4 out of 10 units amph assaulting killed.  Would something like this be acceptable as fortifications?

When you look at the English Channel and contemplate an attack on this island nation, you will see exactly what the Germans saw… a totally depleted British land force. The only thing that stands between you and capturing London is the RAF… Good luck, you’re going to need it. If the allies end up owing so much to so few then you as the German player will suddenly have a more powerful Russian force on your door step than you would have otherwise, but what the hell - you need some Lebensraum.

Um, no.  How is NINETEEN FORTY Europe edition going to start with Germany and Russia at war?  Stalin and Hitler were best buds right up until Operation Barbarossa in June NINETEEN FORTY ONE… Plenty of time to rebuild and refit from Germany with Britain’s capital IPCs, the way Axis and Allies works.

    • Operation Sealion a Possibility with AA1940 Europe?

Ok, so we NEVER get to see this in our regular Axis games…  It’s impossible for Germany to invade England round 2 with ANY build that the UK player can’t see coming a mile away.  Just too easy to counter with UK’s starting IPCs.  But this isn’t historically accurate.

How can the near annihilation of the British Expeditionary Force at Dunkirk and the Air War over Britain be accurately modeled into 1940 Europe?  Britain lost the majority of its heavy equipment at Dunkirk and was resorting to civilians armed with HUNTING RIFLES if the Jerries had in fact invaded.  If Hitler had played it just right there would have been the Italian Supermarina as well as what was left of the Kreigsmarine joining forces to blockade England as well as punch a hole for the invasion fleet.  The Air War over Britain could also have gone differently if the Germans hadn’t switched from military to civilian targets for bombing raids.

So how is this going to be put into the game?  Does Goering get a second chance to prevent the naval evacuation of Dunkirk?  Does Rommel stop his panzers surrounding Dunkirk this time?  Do the Brits and the French get a second chance to stop the Ardennes offensive from occurring?  Does Germany have a better shot at invading Norway, keeping most of its fleet intact for Sealion?  Do the Germans invade Spain to take Gibraltar and allow the Italians passage to the Atlantic?  Do the French and British actually join forces and not get split up defending the Low Countries?

I’m guessing the game should play out like normal BUT UK’s first turn should be at 1/2 IPC production to portray the effect Dunkirk/surprise blitzkreig had on the British Army.  The German player who wishes to try a Sealion and build all naval Round 1 would also be taking a risk since his land forces in France wouldn’t get reinforced Round 2 and France could counterattack if she defended well.  The halved British income would also be more realistic as the UK has too much money at game start anyway since the Axis haven’t had a chance at taking any of it yet!  Maybe submarine wolfpacks could be added to the game to blockade Britain; each turn an enemy sub remains in a SZ by a country’s capital it causes 1d worth of damage to saved IPCs; this could help balance out the UK starting IPC advantage.

      What do you guys think?

Axis and Allies Anniversary Edition: 1, played ONCE one month after I bought it, been collecting dust since, haven’t really played any since the PBF AA50 tech tournament on the boards here, haven’t been able to play at all since Hasbro/WoTC shut down TripleA, can’t find RL opponents willing to devote entire days/weeks to boardgame sessions, going to try to hold an AA50 game sometime in the next few months with my old AAClassic buddies from high school, will see how it goes.

Any people out there who like AA50 in the Austin, San Marcos TX area?  Probably not.

I would recommend looking at play by forum.

Not only does it have the benefit of the ease of finding a game but also you do not have to try and play a game at one sitting which can be problematic with AA50.

I would recommend TripleA freeware, but Hasbro/WoTC shut down distribution cause they’re stupid and refuse to see the point of non-profit fan-driven PROGRESS.

Of coarse without its younger (better looking) big brother around the UK very well would have caved in the region leaving it to the orange monster. Your right about Persia and Caucaus a little coordinated effort between the 3 axis powers could have set them up very well. If only Hitler would have waited till 2010 when Larry Harris lifted the no invading neutral Turkey rule so he could hit Russia from the south (cutting off her fuel) and the east. Just think if Germany/Italy gained control of the French fleet and had the fuel/man power to use it. Can you say REALLY BIG SEA LION!!
      :-D  :-D

Hehehe!  Yes, exactly!  Historical context of the game is really 'tarded as it is!  You CAN’T please everyone with the way the game is, too many angles to look at.  PLUS this game is entirely ahistorical conjecture; if Germany really HAD taken over Russia endgame do you think they’d actually be getting 1/8-10 more of their entire production capacity? (Like 53 IPCs to 60ish IPCs?)  HELL NO!!!  There’d be the mother of all insurrections going on!  Same goes for Britain and the USA!  You can’t reduce an entire country down to a number- it’s just a game.

Well then you could always make a house rule that forces the United States to invest money in both theaters of the war.

that is cop out rule that treats the symtoms but not the disease,

the victory conditions need to be changed and the game needs to be more historical in general

Heh, guess I’m a troll, any threads I make invariably devolve into discussions involving historical accuracy or gameplay mechanics… OR…

OMG YOU GUYS ARE A BUNCH OF NERDS!!!  No wonder WoTC has such an easy time shoving 4023423908 box editions of Axis and Allies down your throats.  Apparently you LIVE for the next variant/edition.  Which usually doesn’t fix ANYTHING, cause you’d need something with the complexity of Hearts of Iron to please the historical fanboys, something like Squad Leader to please the tactical base, and something simple like RISK to please the strategic masterminds.  AXIS AND ALLIES DOESN’T EVEN REMOTELY COVER ALL THOSE BASES.  SO YOU WILL NEVER BE HAPPY, OK?  JUST ENJOY THE GAME FOR WHAT IT IS.  Play something else that is more suited to what you’re interested in, TONS of different WWII video/board games out there… (which IS part of the original point I’ve been making, video game programs simplify the HELL out of this discussion).

As for Japan threatening Moscow… IF Japan had headed WEST instead of EAST in its plunge for world domination, there were MANY 2nd 3rd world semi-industrialized post-colonial countries RIPE for nationalization/liberation from the Allied powers.  LOTS of countries were pissed off at being colonial powers.

IF Japan had liberated/nationalized Southeast Asia, India and the Middle East AND kicked the British out of Africa it would have possessed all the oil, gas, rubber AND probably pissed off colonial manpower the Axis would have EVER needed.  Russia would definitely have been fighting on two fronts in the Caucaus.  Would America have joined the war IF Japan hadn’t pulled a Pearl Harbor?

With America’s standing as a neutral power in 1941 (! even up to the last minute before Pearl Harbor !) I don’t think so.

I mean dont you want A&A to imporve?, otherwise you can just play classic and it dosnt matter what WOTC does.

exactly.  They have better things to do with their time (like improving Axis and Allies, or ADVERTISING Axis and Allies maybe) than shutdown independent fan developed software that’s gotten more people into Axis and Allies and is probably responsible for selling more box sets than ANY A&A advertising campaign WoTC has ever used (if ever).  My god, if Axis and Allies ever got mainstream (like on the level of popularity of Risk, (which, granted, is still probably pretty low)) WoTC could burn all their Magic cards in a Infinite Mana Lava Burst.
