    • JAP and US cruisers

      Hi all.

I got bad cruisers: JAP models are green and US models are brown… I know that Avalon Hill replace bad cruisers with good cruisers, can anyone tell me about this exchange? :?

      Italian distributor doesn’t know anything… :-P

Ok Krieghund, thank you, thank you very much.

Yesterday I played my first game with AAG, that’s very funny! I already love this game!

Nobody bombed any enemy airfield, just an US single battleship on Bougainville that didn’t score any damage. I was Japan, and in the end the game was a draw (I thank to my bad luck and to my friend’s mistakes).

    • QUESTION: Land units and Airfields

      Hi all. Here’s my question.

In the Holy Rule Book I read that, in land combat air units and ranged sea units can attack enemy land units OR airfields, whereas my land units can attack enemy land units AND airfields. This means that land units can fight TWICE in a round (once against land units and then against enemy airfield)? In this case, must I resolve land combat BEFORE the attack against the airfield or are these attacks simoultaneous?

      Thank you.

    • Sergeant's rules (part 3)

Hi there, guyz! Welcome to the new episode of Sergeant’s rules, because my nick, i remember it to all you, in italian means Sergeant in the snow…

      Today we talk about…

      “Random” casualties

This rule is for Axis&Allies Revised, but it can be used even for Pacific or Europe.

Why “random” casualties? Because they’re not properly random, but this rule enable the FIRING player to choose wich enemy unit were hit… When an unit with a value roll higher than 1 scores a “1” on the dice roll, then the rolling player choose wich enemy unit were hit. There are some limitation to this…

Land Units: Artilleries, Tanks and DEFENDING ONLY Infantries can choose only enemy land units. They can destroy air units only if there are no more land units.

Sea Units: Destroyers, Battleships and Sub’s can choose ANY enemy naval unit. Destroyers and Battleships can even choose enemy air unit, but only if there are no more naval units to hit. Battleships bombarding a coastal territory CANNOT choose, in this case apply the normal rule (defender choose). Aircraft Carriers CANNOT choose and stop, anytime.

Air Units: Fighters and Bombers can choose ANY enemy unit.

Super Sub’s can choose with a roll of “2” or less. Attaccking Heavy Bombers and defending Jet Fighters can choose with a roll of “2” or less.

That’s all. What do you think about this?  :-D

I’m only an history buff, a peace-lover, a normal man. I choiced this nick because I love this book very much. It was a very sad page for the italian history.

      Hi all.

Excuse me if i post this topic in the wrong date. Click here to found notices about this battle: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Nikolayevka

In the bottom of the page, you found also the origin of my nickname: italian words “Sergente nella Neve” means “Sergeant in the snow”.

      Peace.

    • RE: Convoy Raid

I like your intention to create a rule to represent convoy raids, but you’re right: it’s a bit complex…

The enhanced rule appear to be in the good path, but it still isn’t the BEST way.

Your argumentations for IC receiving income via land are correct. In the real history, only UK and Japan (two islands) soffered against enemy raids on their convoys… USA was (it’s still) a big country with big land extensions and a big amount of natural resources (someone tell about texas oil???), so i think US should not be affected by enemy convoy raids. Otherwise, UK was a great empire were enemy sub’s menaced home production, but what about australian industries?

      …you’re right, it’s a bit complex…

Maybe at this point the best way to represent convoy raids is to use specific sea zones, such as in Europe or Pacific…

    • RE: Sergeant's rules (part 2)

Lower cost is, in my opinion, too powerful, even if limited to territories with a minimum income value of 2. If training would be free, i think that every unit on the board will be upgraded every round (ok, just one unit per territory, but in all the board)! I look at the sinkiang, or south-africa, or canada, or east indies, or finland-norway…

Higher cost… Why “higher”? Even if i train X unit, i should pay X IPC: the cost is the same, the “speed” of training unit changes… This could be a good change for the training rule and you got a good idea, but still i don’t understand why you call it “higher”…

      Best regards,
      by Sergeant

    • RE: Sergeant's rules (part 2)

My “training rule” is a way to indicate the supplying of an unit with heavy weapons, armoured vehicles and, as i told, a global progressive mechanization of this army. All of this comprends, of course, the training of the troops to properly use this new equipments. This is, in my opinion, an historical fact, unless oil crisis…

At the strategic scale of A&A, a round is a period of at least three months (it’s a convention universally accepted, i think), and a territory, even if in the front line, is a very big extension of terrain. Entires India or UK or Germany are single territories. Islands aren’t a single rock between the ocean, but an entire “island group”: look at the New Guinea, look at the Hawaiian islands. I think that in this big territories some unit is contacting the enemy lines, but some other units are in the rearguard: this unit can be upgraded or, to call them with the name of my rule, they can be trained. If you don’t like this name, think it to “supply an unit”. ;)

And if Japan wants to reinforce its infantry in Wake Island to offer a more agreeable sacrifice to the Opening Fire of US Battleships, who am i to disapprove it? :D

To tekkyy… I am not sure to understand your question, it’s my fault because of my bad english… Every Nation can buy tanks as usual, my rule doesn’t mean any “change” in normal rules. It’s simply an addition. You can buy tanks for your IC and upgrade your artilleries in the front line, with the only limit that only one unit per territory can be upgraded every round.

If your question is about if an infantry can be upgraded directly to a tank, my answer is NO. Training a unit (reinforcing it with vehicles, cannons, heavy weapons), requires much time, so an infantry can be upgraded only one “step” per round.

    • Sergeant's rules (part 2)

Hi all, boyz (and girlz)!  8-)

Here’s the second part of my rules, that i call Sergeant’s Rules, because my nickname means “Sergeant in the snow”….

      Today we talk about…

      Training units:
Every Nation can now upgrade their Artillery or Infantry units by “training”. In every round of play, it can be trained only one unit per territory, and this territory must have a minimum IPC value of 1. A trained infantry becomes an artillery, and an artillery becomes a tank: when trained, simply replace that unit with the correspondant “upgraded” unit. This rule represents the progressive “mechanization” of an army during WW2. In my mind, i think that an artillery piece on the board doesn’t represent an “artillery armee” (this can be unhistorical), but it’s rather an “elite” unit, as German Panzergrenadiers, Soviet Guards, US Rangers, UK Desert Rats, Japanese Sendai and so on. Training costs 1 IPC per unit, that must be payed during Phase 2 - Purchasing units. An unit “in training” can’t participate in combat neither non-combat phase: simply it’s just an “unactive unit” for this turn. To remind this, it could be useful to place that unit on its side. At the end of the round, during Phase 6 - Mobilize new units, the trained unit is finally replaced with the correspondant upgraded unit.

Please excuse me if my english isn’t good, but… What do you think about this rule?  :-D

Stay tuned, nextly i will post more Sergeant’s Rules…!

    • What is BID?

      Hi all.

What is this “BID”? In all games that i played (since 1993) i never heard about it. In the Rules Book there’s no mention to the BID.

Please can someone explain it to me? Thank you.

    • RE: Defender Retreat Option

I agree, defender should be able to retreat, but in this way the retreat option, instead of be a desperate decision to save the army, becomes an opportunity for the defender that can attract the attacker in a trap. This could be a good tactic, in North Africa Rommel was a master of this, but A&A is more strategic than tactic. So, i think, this opportunity could be “limited”.

My idea for this is: defender can declare retreat after at least one cycle of combat. If defender declare retreat, attacker only roll for another cycle of combat and the defender remove all casualties immediately and then the combat is over, defender can’t roll for her/his units (they’re retreting). The attacker wins the combat and the defender have to move all her/his units in the SAME space. No units rest “behind”. This rule also can be applied to naval combats, because ships usually make smoke clouds to hide their retreat.

Defending submarines have still the advantage of fire back and submerge. If an enemy destroyer is there, sub’s can now retreat instead of submerging.

      I like this rule!!! ;)

EDIT: i forgot… AntiAircraft and (of course) Industrial Complexes CAN’T retreat.

      Oh, i’m sorry, excuse me!

In effect i forgot to specify that this rule doesn’t have effect for territories that already have an IC on it.

And you’re right, Germany can mobilize new units faster, but USSR too…

    • RE: Baet Japan going for VPs

Hi all, excuse me if i pull up this old topic, but i’m registered here just now and i find that this discussion is very interesting.

With my friends, we play many matches with AAP. We think that AAP is the BEST of the AA games.

I seen Japan to lose against Allied only once, and the Japan player was me… This time, Allies build 3 fleets: one with USA, of course, 2nd with Australia, for support and 3rd with India, giving her all 12 IPC every turn. Indian fleet were very dangerous, because thanks to the sub’s it can take easily the control of the convoy routes. So, i went to destroy it with my fleet, easily, but in this way i was keeping away from US fleet that easily attack me from back…

    • RE: Sergeant's rules (part 1)

Hi, axis_roll!!!  I’m sorry, but i’m knowing this site (and its forum) only in this period… Italy is far away from here!

As you seen, i modified my precedent version of this rules thanks to your comments. The “line of supply rule” is only a way to make impossible to reinforce encircled territories, even if i think that an encircled territory got more problems than be reinforced… I agree what you tell, this rule could help Allies. But Axis too can have advantage by this rule, enabling Germany to create more infantry across the front-line against USSR or to reinforce Africa, once the Egypt were captured; and the Japan can now build infantry units on the coast without the necessity of a big transport fleet or an IC that, i think, were too un-historic.

And… sincerely… i have NOT play-tested this rules…   :-D  My friends rarely like to try new “house rules” and i hate them for this!  :x  :-P

I just wrote them an e-mail for our next games…
