Speed of play can be greatly increased with some magnetic carriers as well. Saves us a least an hour over of dinking around with the planes.

RE: Playing Solo
you can basically make copies of this and just write the units and use a red marker for the battles. I often do this in an effort to maximize the opening moves.

RE: Playing Solo
Honestly I think you would be basically left to the first round only. Testing openers and different setup. I do this often with some printed map files in sections of course and just draw the movements on the maps. Then use a David Skellys dice simulator to see how the combats would come out or you can roll them your self. See attachment for example.

GTO style game for Global 1940
This question is for anyone previously familiar with the site Game Table Online and it’s timely demise. What exactly happened to cause them to fold? I thought the games looked great and were pretty playable using the AARevised.
I would like to know, especially if anyone from WOTC is reading this, if anyone knows of any plans to bring back something similar or better (IE Global 1940).To the Triple A people who are about to respond, I know about Triple A. I want to know if anyone has any information about this particular subject.

RE: WE WANT A G40 RULE BOOK!
Agree with you YG about WOTC should do this for us. I am pretty sure WOTC is more concerned about how good their Magic the Gathering sales are rather than the A&A crowds. It is unfortunate, because these games offer replayability that far outlasts any digital content such as video games. Card collecting is a hobby I don’t have. If WOTC was really serious, they would give us something like we had on the GTO website. If anyone remembers that and I even was a beta tester for Gleemax back in the day. Triple A is okay. I don’t really play online anymore because its just not that good to me. Too clunky. But the GTO stuff was really good and ahead of its time. If they could put the games in digital format, it would open up a whole new era in gaming. Thus I digress and should probably start a new thread.

RE: Why axis and allies?
Lots of beer can be consumed during this game without effecting game play too much. Need I say more?

RE: WE WANT A G40 RULE BOOK!
We simply downloaded the pdf files from WOTC and printed the “meat pages”. Starting on pg 8 AAE and starting on pg 8 of AAP book. Double side print, stack together. Problem solved. We also printed off large font setups (word document), downloaded from this site but I forgot what thread (Big thanks to whoever did it!). We also attached our house rules and took them to Office Depot and had a cool plastic cover with a translucent globe on the front and black plastic on the back and a spiral binding for all of it. Cost about $12 (USD) for 2 copies. Everything stays put and it’s all in one file. Very easy. We even are going to see if we can get the plastic cover printed with the A&A logo for our next few iterations.

RE: How to catch opponents off guard
Try the Dark Skies strategy. It can be fun if no one has ever seen it in your group. Just buy a bunch of bombers the first two rounds and pair them with fighters and tacs. 3rd round all artillery. 4th round all mechs. 5th round all tanks. 6th round infantry and push like hell all the way to moscow.

RE: Declaring Casualties
We subscribe to what would be a common “house rule”? Everybody rolls their dice attacker/defender then each side picks casualties at the same time. I’m sure this is wrong as stated here but it makes the game better if you don’t always get shafted on combat.

RE: Turn one attacks that must not fail
I am in concurrence about the defeatist attitude. I think you should try to play it out. This game takes on average about 45 minutes to setup. The dice will “dice you”. Suck it up and see if you can get out of the pickle. The only true test of your skill is when you are backed into a wall. Why not let your opponent relish in the short lived victory? I’ve come back from what appeared to be certain doom on about 5 occasions. These are the games that are always remembered and talked about for years to come. “You remember that one time when I came back…”
I’ve assaulted Moscow 3 times in a game before finally breaking through. Couldn’t attack the Chinese with Japan (House rule) twice in a game. My USA got blasted in the Pacific by the Japanese fleet. Lost London and kept playing anyway for 5 more hours. It’s often more fun to see just how good you really are than worry about a win loss record. I use an unknown quote to end my tirade on quitting early.
“No good captain worth his salt only ever sailed calm seas.” -
RE: D/FW 1940 Global or 1942 Revised
Just send me a message and I’ll give you his phone number. He’s a teacher so he’s pretty easy to get a game on weekends.

RE: UK/USSR VS Germany/Italy
This is for NO BID players
We find that the combination on UK1 usually consists of Taranto, Tobruk (if available) and activating Persia.
As such
Taranto
Bmr, 2 ftrs London >SZ97 use AC in 98 if needed
Tac, DD, CR SZ98 > SZ97
ftr Malta > SZ 97
74% win with full 3 ftr scramble from S. Italy, BB, CR SZ 97Tobruk only if available (UK CR in 91 alive)
CR, ftr Gib > SZ 96
95% win with Italian DDArt, inf Egypt via TT to 96 >Tobruk
2 inf, art, armor Alexandria > Tobruk
mech Egypt > Tobruk
66% win its iffy but worth it.Activate Persia
Art from india pick up inf w. IndiaMove CR to 80 move BB to 79 for Iraq bombard next turn.
This has pretty much neutered Italy for the long term in practically 80% of our games. Ethiopia or Iraq gets slammed in the following round.
Non Combat
UK places blockers in Kenya and Anglo Egypt Sudan, DD SZ71 > SZ 81
Everything else lands in the usual places. AC retreats if needed.USSR has a lot more options in our NO BID game.
We push into China which allows our USA player a bit of room and frustrates Japan. Suiyuyan becomes a base of operations for the the final push to Manchuria with all of the Amur joining in. Use the chinese to can open so you don’t upset the mongolians. Read pg 39 of the AAP40 rule book 3rd paragraph last sentenceSo if the Chinese can get Manchuria you can non combat in there and blast infantry all the way to Shanghai.
UK sends Ftrs to Moscow via Persia. We usually only send the Buryatia inf west as they are the only ones who can really make it in time to do anything R6. At that point Germany is probably about to siege Moscow.
With the massive impending American landing becoming a reality Germany always begins to contemplate a big troop purchase. Italy is never a factor after about one can opener because they get bombed by USA from Algeria. Most of this strategy relies on the fact that the USA commits early to the European theater with an occasional submarine purchase in W. USA. Yes, Japan becomes a monster but with a little help from the USSR when needed, China can cause major problems and keep the India crush as a non starter along with the USA subs. Japan can be reduced to trying to get mainland asia back.
We borrowed/modified some stuff from Young Grasshopper’s strategies and played around with it bit and made it just a smidge better (read as more effective) in our opinion.
Thoughts? Please feel free to poke holes in this as it help me to find counter attacks that I haven’t seen or thought of

RE: Scramble G1\. Why not?
My all time favorite scramble is SZ109 when the opponent tries to kill the dd and transport. Easy sub kill. I’ve been known to pull this one a few times when my bud forgets with some very fun results later. Problem is that you have to hit them all the first time or no DD left for the fun.

RE: J-3 DOW on W.Allies. J-1 buy Poll
Turn 3 DOW. with NB you can go anywhere.

RE: J-3 DOW on W.Allies. J-1 buy Poll
Slow day here at work. No new client requests so here is what this essentially looks like the end of the day. Blue is noncombat. Taking guam and midway to try to get perimeter NO.
-
RE: J-3 DOW on W.Allies. J-1 buy Poll
Looking for opinions with explanations. Question is: Where do people generally put the factory if purchased on J1 (assume no DOW on UK/Anzac/FIC)? We have also been experimenting with a NB on the first turn in Kwangsi to facilitate the transport shuck shuck and the ability to threaten india instantly.

RE: Unit representations and timeline
We aren’t really seeking any realism. We used our imagination on this and simply like to say “It’s 1944, where’s D-Day?” and throw other such taunts as appropriate for the Axis or Allies. We’ll just continue with our 6 month system for simplicity. We even have considered a 9 month window to reflect the usual Turn 3 (December 41) entry for the USA. This would also reflect a Turn 4 (September 1942) entry for the USSR. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter it just makes it fun for us to imagine where we are in the war.

I believe those particular crews were some of the most “decorated” veterans of any campaign.
