I have a question about altitude. Say I want to move at speed 4 low speed and I want to go up in altitude 1k feet and make right consecutive turns. Would the steps be the following steps? 1. Go up 1k in altitude. 2. move forward and turn plane one hex side. 3. move one hex forward and turn one hex side and finally. 4. Move one hex forward and turn on hex side. Does going up or down in altitude constitute a one of the movements for speed? Can you combine a turn with an altitude change? I haven’t played any games with altitude because it got too confusing.

Handful of Aces
My friend, hkytown1, and I attended a symposium put on by the Oakland Aviation Museum in Alameda, Ca last night. It was a panel of 4 WWII Aces, Alex Vraciu 19 kills F6F Hellcat, Ted Crosby 5.25 kills F6F Hellcat, Archie Maltbie 2 kills P-47 Thunderbolt (7 others not credited because film canister was damaged and they would not accept testimony from wingmen), and Dean Caswell 7 kills F4U Corsair. It was a truly amazing experience to hear these guys and their stories. Each day another WWII member dies and with him so does history. If you can make it to one of these try to do so. It is an experience I will never forget.
The 379th Bomber group is having its reunion in San Diego from August 22-26 2012 and I am going to try to attend since I am writing a book about a B-17 crew during WWII.

RE: Top three favorite war movies
I agree with IL; it depends on how the plot and characters are driven. Movies like Pearl Harbor are considered Historical Fiction, because while some events may have occurred during the war, the main characters and storyline are fictional. Band of Brothers and The Pacific are not fiction as they are actual accounts taken from the writings of those that were there. Read With the Old Breed by Eugene “Sledgehammer” Sledge and Helmet for My Pillow by Robert Leckie.
I think we can all agree here that there are some great movies that have been passed down to us by our Father’s and Grandfather’s. My father introduced me to watching Patton and many other war movies and now I am doing the same for my son.
The great thing about Axis and Allies is that we can bring these battles to life and learn more about what and where our earlier generations fought.

New Set
Has anyone heard of a second set coming out? They could do a Pacific Themed starter. I thought I read somewhere that October a new set was coming.

RE: Armor-Vital Armor-Hull
Thanks Azrael, my best friend Hkytown1, bought 14 boosters and a starter set this week. So he is coming over tomorrow and he along with my 9 yr old are going to play miniatures Naval, Air, and Land.

RE: Top three favorite war movies
Guns of Navarone was a great movie too. I also agree with Full Metal Jacket. I don’t think anyone can think about the Marines without seeing either Private Pyle or hearing the Drill Instructor cutting them down.

While those are good movies, I also like The Longest Day, Patton, Run Silent Run Deep, Midway, Tora Tora Tora, Black Hawk Down, Act of Valor, Red Tails, Battle of Britain.

RE: Armor-Vital Armor-Hull
I have another question I have not been able to figure out. If you have say a BB that has 3 attacks and you use them all on one ship can you stack those hits or are they considered separate attacks that look at the armor, then the vital, and finally the hull? For example, I have the USS Arizona and he fires his main gun and gets 6 hits, then the secondary gun fires and gets 4 hits, and finally the tertiary gun fires and gets 3 hits. Say the armor of the German BB Moltke is 6, vital is 13, and hull is 4. In this example would I only score 1 point of damage against the hull for equaling 6 or can I combine all 3 weapon hits for the 13 that equal the vital?

RE: Armor-Vital Armor-Hull
Played a game with my son today, he was Allies and I was Axis. He had the USS New Jersey BB, HMS Hawkins Cruiser, USS Montpelier Cruiser, and TBF Avenger. I had the German Moltke Battleship, Haguro Heavy Cruiser, German Sub U-2511, and Elite A6M2 Zero. The first ship destroyed was my Heavy Cruiser Haguro. I crippled the USS Montpelier and and took away two hull points on the USS New Jersey with a torpedo attack from my sub. My son then damaged the Moltke Battleship. I tried attacking with my planes but had aborted missions twice. I finally sunk the USS Montpelier, followed by the USS New Jersey. Leaving him the HMS Hawkins and his Avenger planes against my Zeroes and German Sub. He hid behind an island and was out of the line of sight and my planes were shot down by his air defense on the HMS Hawkins. Then his Avengers finally sank my German sub. We are still learning this game as well as the Air Force Minis.
Questions: 1. If my planes had taken out the Avengers there would have been no attacks available for my Son to take out the sub. So in order to win I would have to chase him around the board until I could sink him?
2. The HMS Hawkins does have a torpedo attack capability but is that just for surface ships and not subs?

RE: Should I buy this?
The thing about the starter, that is how you get the rule book, maps, and stat cards for the planes and getting the BF-110. Invariably you could buy the starter and then buy the planes you want from eBay or other sites to round out your air force. I bought the starter and a case to open.

RE: Played Games
Anyone playing any games this weekend? My son and I are going to try to get a game in.

RE: Unit reviews
Hi djensen, I am really new to the miniatures and would like to know what you are looking for in the unit reviews. Are you looking for reviews on individual planes in regards to their strengths and weaknesses, etc?

RE: Played Games
Anyone use the Zero’s yet? I need to go through and read all the stat cards. I’m afraid to use the Italian planes, they may breakup on takeoff. LOL

RE: Played Games
The 110 is pretty sweet, it has a special ability because of the tail-gunner that inflicted 1 point of damage on my P-40 Warhawk. It outlasted the 109 Ace.

RE: Played Games
The only two planes I have used have been the P-51 Ace and P-40 Warhawk with Poor Pilot rating. I love the P-51 Mustang, it has always been one of my favorites along with the Corsair, which hopefully will be in a second set. Any word on a release of other sets?
What is your favorite plane so far?

RE: Played Games
Did you use the special abilities and difficult maneuvers? Can you stack multiple bonuses for an advantage or is it just a +1 bonus, because it says you can stack a negative for a -2?
