    • RE: AA Global 40 electronic map?

      also, some aspects of the game can be achieved with edit, and by making changes to the units ‘in map’. for instance, by setting the fighter movement to 5, airbases need not be “coded” as such. players will simply have to be on the ball when it comes to keeping track of fighter movement, and not rely on the engine for keeping track of legal moves.

      ‘edit mode’ will be sufficient for convoy zones too.

      edit should be able to handle the ‘at war’ bonuses and adding bonus units from neutrals. which neutrals will fight can be agreed upon, and edit can be used as needed.

      major/minor factories can probably be handled by agreement and edit.

      scrambling fighters, the need for repairing ships at a port, and built in AA defense at factories are about the only things i think preventing players from playing a full blown global-like game.

      a triplea variant of a global-like game is being worked on. that said, the current engine does not support things like airbases, convoy zones, repairing ships, or scrambling fighters. the map is in the works though, so it will be possible to play an AA50 style game on the global-like map, which should still be very satisfying. whether or not the engine will be recoded
      to support all the new rules is still an open question.

    • RE: Printing costs and model paints.

      @Fishmoto37:

      I print my maps on 8 1/2 X 11 sheets of card stock, trim them and tape them together with clear packaging tape. (Takes one new color ink cartridge for a 3X6 map) Then cover the whole thing with 3X6 plexiglass. ($50.00) Works for me. But if you do not have a place to leave them laying flat then storage could be a problem. I dont think that rolling them up for storage would work very good.

      my plan was to glue them/it to a wooden board, then cut the board into three pieces, and add rubber feet to prevent sliding.

      do you have any pics of your boards? were they laser printed or ink jet?

      Why are you doing this? Is the actual board not big enough for you? :roll:

      No! it isnt. the spaces get very crowded very quickly.

      Then use chips.

      If you are using chips and still getting crowded, stop playing defensively

      geez. you have an opinion on everything A&A dont you!

    • Printing costs and model paints.

      hey all,

      so i had some designs on printing out my own A&A Global board to about a 6 foot by 4 foot dimension. so i called up kinkos to get a full colour printing estimate, and they said $288! gadzooks!

      barring printing out a series of small sheets and binding them together (unless, that actually works well, though i have my doubts) can someone suggest another printing alternative?

      p.s. am also considering painting my own board. model paints?

    • RE: The Ultimate Axis and Allies Global 1940 Video of ALL TIME

      @maverick_76:

      Well it doesn’t have to be all done up like that. Maybe leave a camera on during the course of the game and edit out the pauses in play. That is what I was thinking.

      Yeah, I hear you. You could make a low production A&A vid, but there are those already online, and the problem is that it is hard to see how many units are where, and exactly what people are doing - cause one is always stuck compromising between camera zoom, and seeing the whole board. That is, its going to be a lot of work regardless of what you do if it is going to be clear.

      That said. screen captures of Triplea games strung together into one AA movie would be very clear, and simple to make.

      glad you liked it. even that video, which glossed over a ton, and was also kind of slapped together, took me a solid eight hours to make… as long as it took to play the game! a bit much to ask of people to make vid summaries of their games for critique. that said, i might just go ahead and make an even better one, take the time to photograph it right, good lighting, more detail, etc.

      but you are correct after all, from the section on subs:

      There is an exception to this rule, however. A submarine can attack any transport that moves into or through its sea zone unaccompanied by surface warships, in either
      combat or noncombat movement. Each submarine fires once (using its attack value of 2) at the transport(s), and one transport must be removed by the moving player for each hit scored. Any undestroyed transports can continue their planned movement.

      not according to my rules… surface ships can ignore subs for the purposes of movement.

      from the rulebook:

      Amphibious Assaults
      During this step you will resolve each amphibious assault
      you announced during the Combat Move phase. If you did
      not announce an amphibious assault, go to General Combat
      (see pg. 16)

      Amphibious Assault Sequence

      1. Sea combat
      2. Battleship & cruiser bombardment
      3. Land combat

      Step 1. Sea Combat:

      If there are defending surface warships and/or scrambled air units, sea combat occurs. If there areonly defending submarines and/or transports, the attacker can
      choose to ignore those units or conduct sea combat.

      its possible that i mixed up the order of when the subs were built. nice spot.

      either that… or we thought there was an extra SZ there… it was the last turn of a very long game :)

      @zooooma:

      Next time we play let’s do stop animation for pivotal movements!

      doing something extensive (hell, i could bring my movie lights) would be really fun. it kinda means thatour 10 hour game, takes 20 hours now though.

      i used an online Text to Speech program for the voices. they aren’t the best in terms of consistency, but pretty fun i thought.

      thanks for the kid words, and no Zooooma, I missed the Alaska planes ( a lot of other stuff too)

      If I had a day to both properly shoot and play an A&A game… look out!

      ok, maybe not the ultimate video, but i took a day to make this game summary of a six turn Global 1940 game I played a few days ago. having the experience of making this video, i think i know how I would make the ultimate A&A vid, but still this summary worked out pretty decently, and was rather too much work to spend on such a thing.

      at any rate, i dont think you have seen anything like this before:

      http://www.youtube.com/user/robinlindsaytv?feature=mhum#p/a/u/0/YtjF3KADnc0

      p.s. i can’t believe I spelled “victory” “vicotry” at the end… duh.

      well, if russia buys three art turn 1 and saves the rest and collects the same turn 2, that would be a turn two buy of 25+37= 62 to spend in 16 slots. which is either 9 tanks and 2 mech inf if Germany is going sea lion, or 14 art + 1 tank if Germany is going for russia. so your save idea seems to have some merit.

      @zooooma:

      Had I noticed, I could have simply blocked USA with a cruiser in sz110 or sz104.  That’s all I needed.  Your “very cool move” was no more than my big blunder.  The point is tat attack killed way more than one Russian build - something like half a dozen tanks, half a dozen troops, and a bomber.

      point taken

      But do you really want to plan an R5 strike in Berlin before you’ve seen my G2?  If I spend my 70 IPCs on ground forces you might wish you’d bought more infantry and artillery I think.  This is very interesting though, because an aggressive R1 might just allow you to under defend UK slightly (as you did) and still deter Sea Lion.  This might end up being too costly for Russia, though.

      i dont think the buying of a few offensive units on R1 (they could be mech inf instead and be only slightly less efficient in our russian defense should germany turn against us, and perhaps even better if speed counts for anything)would be that (if at all) hampering to Russia coping with Germany.

      @Clyde85:

      I think thats the crux of the whole game, taking the situation of 1940, and seeing what YOU can do with it

      Clearly not. A&A is such an incredibly superficial representation of the world in 1940 that to suggest it to be a simulation is absurd. combine that with extreme unrealism in terms of rules, and access to information, what we have here is an excellent board game that simply bares a resemblance to WW2 and nothing more.

      @zooooma:

      That’s not more important.  Germany could have defended much better too.  Russia was only a favourite because I missed the American attack on West Germany.

      we are talking about a whole buys worth of russian troops (less three inf) attacking germany that turn. i would call that massive, and perhaps more important.

      When can we play again?

      message me. monday or tues might work.
