Dremel tools are very useful for a lot of things Highly recommend them.
(I sharpen my old lawnmower blade with it as the blade is stuck on.)
The bit I used was a ball shaped cutter so it went in nicely.

As for balance, I was careful to not take much away. Some did get removed as I closely watched the dust colour.
By and large though, the paint “chipped” off when scraped. They don’t use super adhesive paint for these dice as they are protected from direct impact.
The balance issue is less than drilling out one side for a pip.

Hopefully will get the green dice today and finish this project up.
Then back to finding a better storage solution for my 1942.2 game. :-(

    • Poor mans battle dice

I used a dermal/moto-tool to scrap out the colours in the pips.

Next I used a black/red sharpie marker in those “new” pips to blend better with
the flat surface of the die.

Only took a couple of hours to do 30 dice.

Picking up some green dice tomorrow to make the “4 hits” dice.

Just a thought for those without $75-$100 lying around for custom dice.

    • RE: Converting my 1st edition game to 2nd edition

doesn’t the 2nd edition 1942 have nation coloured AA guns which were used in 1940 2nd as AAA?
I did this with my 1st ed Pac. 1940 and just used grey generic AA guns from an earlier game. (like we all don’t have an earlier edition of an A&A game on the shelf) :-)
I prefer the 1st edition maps over the second edition. Never liked the income tracker on the board.
I did however buy a used 2nd ed. Europe 1940 as there are too many unique colours to buy individually
Never hurts to have a few more pieces for Italy and France too.
I know HBG sells pieces at a good price but shipping to Canada is way overpriced. (12-18 pieces costs $25 for shipping)

      Thanks for the heads up.
That comes in around retail pricing for the whole game here.
I’m going into the city this weekend and might pick up a copy.

In the mean time, work progresses on converting the 42 map to 41.
I’ve put dots overall the IPC values and am colouring them to blend in better.
The territories with IPC values will remain white though.

The SZ difference in the Pacific might skew that sides war a bit.
Will know once I  place units on the board.

    • RE: Transforming spring 1942 into 1941 questions

Well, I have created a few maps using various techniques. (all what you describe plus more)
None seem to really work, but I keep trying. :-)

As for cost, ink for the printer is pricey here, $12-$15 a colour. Looking at the map, yellow would need replacing twice as would blue/cyan.
Print shops charge $5-$10 just to open a file before sending it to the colour copier.

I have to check with banner/sign shops for those G40 maps.

I keep an eye out on BGG for parts for A&A from Canadians. Nothing yet but still looking.

I think in the end, I’ll just set the game up and see what is different.
A quick glance over sees a few minor territories, north Africa is two  parts and China is divided sideways.
Sea zones will be the tricky ones to alter (or not).

      Thanks for the response.
I’ve done pretty much everything on the list except the map.
Printing a map out would run up near the price of the game new.
Plus, having done the process you described, before, the folds always end up damaged or ripped.

I just thought that the maps were very close in nature that I could use the 1942 1st ed. one instead of the 1941 map.
Guess I’ll just lay out everything and rejig the IPCs where one territory is two in the 1942 1st ed.
Once I see how it affect the countries income, I can better judge the game play.

    • Transforming spring 1942 into 1941 questions

Having Spring 1942 sitting around collecting dust, I thought I might turn it into a 1941 version.
Looking at the map, there are a few more territories/SZs in the 1942 version.
This, hopefully , won’t affect the game too much.
      Thoughts?

I figured I’d renumber the territories IPC values to match the 1941 board.

      Will this work?
      Am I overlooking something?

I could buy the 1941 version, but it is $30 in Canada at its cheapest and I have a Spring 1942 which doesn’t get played.

      Thanks in advance,
      Robert

    • RE: Axis & Allies and Zombies is REAL

I think they plan a press release in April with more details about the game.

Purists may indeed hate it, but they might also buy it for the various bits.

1941 falls into that category I do believe.

Agreed, you probably won’t be able to remove the zombies/cards.

However, you might get a nice map which would replace the revised map. You might then be able to create a faster playing A&A game.
This would then replace 1941 as the intro game for new players.

The cards might be transferable, but that is a wait and see.

Extra pieces might be used elsewhere if colour and sculpt  permit.

Chips and dice, meh, unless the chips are a different colour.

I am looking forward to a press release to see what they have in mind for this game.

    • RE: Custom Map

All vector programs have a learning curve. Best way to learn a program fast is to start an actual project with them.
Google techniques as needed, not to get an understanding of the program.

It really comes down to ownership and time.
Adobe is cheaper at first but you will need to keep paying. Add that you will feel you need to use it to get the $20 out of it.
If later revisions are warranted, you will need to re-subscribe.
Affinity will be more expensive at first but you own it and can use it whenever you have the time.

Both will do what you want in this case.
If I was starting out now, I’d use Affinity as it offers the most options for my time. (no having to get it done before the end of the month/subscription)

A lot of the techniques/commands are similar in both programs so switching later isn’t relearning from scratch.

    • RE: Where to start?

I would play Annie. straight out of the box first to get the rules down.
Both start times offer something different to challenge you.
      Play time is also shorter.

Next, I’d read the G40 rules and note the differences.

From this, you either try G40 as is or start modding either set of rules.

It really comes down to what you want out of the game.
Shorter-longer play time/more-less complex rules/bigger footprint maps and more maneuver room.

There are rules sets posted here which have modded the game already, so you might look at these first as they may fit the bill for what you want out of the game.

For me, playing a few games OOB is key to understanding why others and yourself need mods in the first place.

The point you are missing is the manufacturing time line.
Having worked in the field, I know it takes time to design, sculpt and process new figures/models and their dies.
Two years would be tight time line to complete this, especially from China.

I prefer to have/own rules professionally printed rather than pdfs  and/or home printed ones.

The rules, Alpha 3 or WOTC, are not the issue here as they take little time to manufacture.
The fact that the 1st edition ones are a mess is telling though.

HBG is not an option for me as shipping costs more than the items bought.

Again, it is telling when you factor the complete time for creating new sculpts from scratch, that WOTC was working on aa 2nd edition when the first hit was being finalized/shipped.

    • RE: Custom Map

the main problem with PS is it isn’t that scalable.
AI is a vector program which allows it to be scaled at any size without the images becoming bitmapped.
AI  6 was the last buyable software before the subscription model came into effect.
It would cost $240 US a year or for me $310 CDN. Bundles would be higher.
All the new features are not needed, by me, so it is a waste of money.
Adobe was trying to get more money because not everyone upgraded each time.
Now they are forced to and pay for it too.

Affinity is a company to watch as they are aggressive and want to replace Adobe as a viable alternative.
Many designers own both companies software and will drop Adobe at the soonest possible moment.

    • RE: Custom Map

I’ve dabbled in Affinity designer and photo. I use Adobe Illustrator now for work but am slowly learning designer as it probably will replace AI in the future. I won’t pay Adobes software ransom demands.

Designer has been going since 2014 so it does have growing pains trying to get on par with Illustrator. ( I won’t say it is riddled with bugs, just not as feature rich as AI )
Photo on the other hand is a viable PS replacement. (more money in creating a PS app than a vector app)
That said, it should work fine for most if not all your needs.

Really though, there is no other alternative AI when doing large files/maps.

If you are not in a hurry, check the app store on major holidays as these do go on sale. I think I got mine on the July 4th or Black Friday sale.

      Hope this helps.

      @DouchemanMacgee:

      @robert:

Wizard’s been “cashing in” with this franchise since the “2nd editions” release. It still rubs me the wrong way thinking about that fiasco.
They should have created an upgrade kit for 1st edition owners. :x

Second edition of what? G40? There’s nothing in G402E that you can’t just house rule into first edition IIRC.

Only other “2nd Edition” out there is 42SE and it’s an entirely separate game from 42.

So, with G40 2nd ed., you’re fine with WOTC releasing a product while actively working on a 2nd ed. at the same time?
New sculpts take time to create, proof and sign off on.
WOTC would have to have been working on this while getting 1st ed. out the door.
As for house ruling, why do I have to? I just paid $200 for G40.
1942.2 was again released too soon after Spring 1942. Both games existed at the same time in different stages of being finished.
WOTC used people as play testers and had them pay for the privilege.

Interesting, might have to buy it for the cards. Glad to hear there is an A&A fan base in WOTC.
Can’t wait for April and a press release. :-)

I have them all but am now very hesitant to buy anything “new” from WOTC.

Chances are, there will be a better “2nd edition” a few years later.

      well said and summed up.

I figure that if the game tanks (for lack of a better word) then it will go silently away.
The A&A brand will not suffer from this new game, or short term only.
Now, if it is a success, then it will elevate the brand awareness to to masses.
The series will see a resurgence and we might see a new edition.
Personally, I’d like to see the mid-level game be the love child between 1942.2 and Anniversary.
The pieces from 42 and the armies and map from Anniv. would be glorious.
Rules wise, there needs to be a quick play set that uses all the pieces.
1941 is too dumbed down and has limited deployability.
I’ve seen games which start with basic concepts and add rules as players get familiar with the game.
This is what A&A needs. A game playable in the 2-3 hour range.

Anyway, looking forward to their A&AZ game and see how it works.
Probably won’t buy it unless there are pieces for other games I need. :-D

‘[Prime Minister William Lyon McKenzie-]King finally agreed to a one-time levy of 17,000 NRMA conscripts for overseas service in November 1944.’ (Conscription Crisis of 1944)

Note the date and number and compare with the fact that over a million Canadians had been in  uniform by the end of WWII. In other words, most were volunteers. Which may be why it’s proving somewhat difficult to find information about the means by which some attempted to avoid being conscripted.

I have heard that at least a few unmarried men would arrange to visit with women with children when they were expecting to be questions by officers looking for conscripts.

There has always been a problem between the French and English Canadians.
Thankfully, we have never “gone to civil war” over it
