So many different eras were covered by Airfix. My hobby shop had shelves of little boxes and terrain and tanks.
It was a great time to be a kid.

One of the best tricks in life is to sustain your childhood enthusiasm for hobbies into your adulthood, so that you can combine this youthful enthusiasm with an adult’s greater financial capacity to indulge in those hobbies on a much larger scale.

yes but those stores and stock were long gone by the time I had disposable cash.  :-(
Now the next step is to go buy or if you still have those old plastic army men 3" and the plastic tanks and get your self some ships that float and build yourself a big pond and now have naval battles and Amp landings on shores.

Just like playing with Garden trains in your back yard.

Airfix was huge back in the 70’s to mid 80’s.

A lot of people had large collections of those plastic armies.

I think it loses something when you don’t have a bunch of infantry or tanks in an area. :-D

I prefer limited use of chips, a visual thing about a front looking like a front.

That size board would be great to use those “poker” rakes with. Just like the war rooms of WWII.

sounding better the closer we get to Oct. 31.

I’ll probably put it on my Christmas list to give the family something to buy me.

I’d like to know more about how it ports to 1942.

I believe the generic VC’s come from a certain Risk game although I can’t remember which one.

agreed, not a fan of ghost images on the board.

      logo could go as well.

nice clean simple design for sea zones works best for me.

I separate the destroyers out by their flat back end, transports by their funnels and battleships by their size.

Germany is a bit of a pain as not all of this applies.

Japan can always lend a hand in that battle by opening a second front.

It would be hard to replicate the urban fighting in Stal.

The river crossing could be easily abstracted with die rolls.

Germans would have tanks, art. and inf. while the Russians would just have inf and maybe a little art.

      Not a great balance.

A game on the Med. would be great though.

Naval land and air units. Spain to Iraq Italy to Egypt.

Americans come in late like in 1914. Germans/Italians/British/ANZAC/Neutrals, hell even Russians and if the map stretches east a bit, the battle of Stalingrad

Maybe I’ll look at making a map this coming winter…

A game which deals with the Africa front and Italian campaign would be great. It seems like the next step in the A&A game series.

Going from north of Rome down to the Sahara desert would incorporate naval, land and air pieces.

It would fill in an area which is missing right now from A&A.

      :-D

While I  agree with most of this, I do think BotB and D-Day were good games. It is a shame the line wasn’t extended more to say Stalingrad (urban fighting block by block) or North Africa.

seems simple enough to change the order of sequence. Doesn’t seem like a major house rule.

I see why they did it. It simplifies the game by taking the guess work out of what you need since you can see what is now needed and where.

This would go a long way to helping young players get into the game. Less bad choices/frustrations.

This game is definitely shaping up to be a great intro game into A&A. Higher IPC numbers on the territories means more purchases/choices. A full line up of pieces. Money. Optional rules.

An ability to transfer the rules to 1942.2 is very intriguing as once the AAZ gets stale/old, you can move up to a harder/ more complex version. Then finally do away with the zombie component altogether.

Having been with A&A since 1987, gaps between version releases are no big issue. 15+ years between MB and Revised. Everyone got spoiled with revised/1942/G40 era. (technically the second editions should have been released as first as WOTC used us as play testers for those last 1st ed releases.)

A&A shouldn’t see a major overhaul/remake until 2021 or so going by the release history and then only if something new can be added.

      MB second edition-1987 / Revised-2004 / 1942.2-2012. So 17 years / 8 years.

Doing other eras, like WWI, is an option for the future of the series. I think battles/campaigns are done as we haven’t seen anything since 2007.

Personally, I think this game has gone as far as it can within the price and size restrictions of the market. Adding more types of units and enlarging the board bring it into the tabletop miniatures wargame sphere.

      Time will tell though.

well, sounds like the board can be used to replace the 1941 board as an intro game to A&A.

This, plus the upped IPCs, might just be the gate way game 1941 should have been.

I  sense there will be a lot of house rules created to help this along.

Thanks for the insights, too bad about the picture taking ban. Even shots of the pieces, which must be done by now, would have been nice.

for space, you would need a sh*t load of transports to go from one planet to the next.

It would be interesting though, 5 galaxies fighting for control of the universe.

zombies are still a hot topic although definitely on the decline.

A&A for other eras would probably just need a clever sales pitch.

Risk Napoleonics is a good game but limited to Europe and only released in French.

The Roman conquests would be a similar area-Europe/Africa/Middle East.

Don’t remember how far north Alexander went, he did go east a fair bit.

Civil War and Korea might be a bit small an area to game. We will have to see how Vietnam plays to know how smaller conflicts work.

I don’t think it is meant to get people interested in A&A at all.
A side benefit maybe, but they already have an intro A&A game.

If successful, it might turn into a Risk type strategy. That is, overlay various themes on the core system.

Nothing new has been released for WWII A&A since 2012.

Even then, it was a reprint and errata edition.

So, 6 years later, they release a new concept which includes zombies.

This won’t affect their thoughts on the core A&A if it bombs as they already have given up on the franchise.

I think A&A Anniv. and Global 1940 are the pinnacle of what you can do with this game.

HBC has released other versions (earlier starts/more complex) but I doubt WOTC want to go this route.

    • RE: Polygon A&A&Z article, June 6, 2018

I believe once a zombie territory is formed, the IPCs are dead. It now falls on you to clear the territory so as to collect those IPCs.
This is another way to keep forces fighting both each other and the zombies.

Strategic retreats are an interesting new twist though.

The down side is both Russia and the Germans need IPCs to continue to fight, fuel the war effort.

Landing zombies in Canada or Africa could really hurt the UK player as well.

Interesting game gimmick. I could see some really wild games with zombies being shipped all over the board.

Needs the right group of friends and a lot of beer and pretzels though.
