    • RE: My review copy of Axis & Allies Europe 1940 has arrived

      @Imperious:

Can you please confirm that Europe 1940 will be for sale at GenCon Indy?

They said no it won’t but bring money anyway because you may be able to buy a copy that they give to the winners ( they have 5), or you can win a copy by winning one of the tourneys.

Yeah, I read that on your homeboy’s website, but Jensen says it will so who is right?
I’m not going to bother to drive 9 hours for a slim chance that I may win a game.  Or will I?

Whether or not I make to trip down there depends on this.

If I go, it’ll be August 5th (Thursday).
I’d need a confirmed price and if there will be plenty of copies or if I need to stand in line at 7AM.

I think it was a prank.  He’s having a laugh at our expense.

I’d like to try UK with the split-income thing.  Being the only holdout in Europe, trying to reinforce Malta, defending your French allies’ territories in Africa, and holding out vs. Japan at all costs seems the most fun thing to do.  You’re basically involved in some way with every single theater.

      Hey Allwork,

On my Japanese infantry the paint seems to chip off of their little rifle REALLY easy.  Any suggestions on how to counter that?  Would foundation work easier than paint to keep it on there?

      Just curious.

RAF looks great.  For my set I did the Yellow-Blue-White-Red roundel for India and the Blue-Red roundel for ANZAC.
I really like your camo job, I’m not brave enough to do that other than for artillery, mechs, and tanks.

Anyways, all done then… good job.  I’ve only got the startup pieces done plus a bunch others, so I’ve got a long way to go.  I’ll try and post pics when I can.

In particular I really like your Mosquito bombers.  I hope you don’t mind if I borrow your concept for them :)
Those things were awesome during the war and deserve special attention!

    • RE: What do you want to be the next AA game?

I’d like to see a World War I version called “Central & Entente”.
The board would be only from the Eastern US to Western Russia, and it would be England, France, and Russia vs. Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottomans.  After a specified turn, Russia would drop out of the game and the USA would come into it.

There would be only infantry, artillery, biplane/triplane fighters, battleships, cruisers, destroyers and U-boats.
Tanks, derigible bombers, and carriers would be techs, as would mustard gas.
The board would be as large as the combined Global 1940 game but would focus mainly on Europe, and use the basic A&A combat system.

I’d totally ignore China and Japan and leave that whole side of the board off.

    • RE: In your opinion, what is strategically your favorite army to play and why?

      @Admiral:

      Japan.

I think reading Kaigun may have had quite an influence of me.

I loved Kaigun.  Wrote my senior thesis in History based on that book.
Anyways, my fav to play is the US, 'cause I like to be the good guys… and there’s really no pressure.  I can let someone else screw up then bail them out at the last minute.  Always fun.

    • RE: Axis and Allies Money!!

That’s part of the reason that I started painting my set… I borrowed my AA guns from Guadalcanal and used them for PAC40.
The industrial complexes, air bases, and naval bases I rather like as the counters… I mean at least I don’t mind them.
And really we just write down all IPC transactions on a piece of paper, but I’d rather play with an income tracker and poker chips.  I really think that’s best.

    • RE: Balanced!

I think that the way we had it challenges Japan plenty and allows the Allies a fair shake.  Even if it tips the game in the Allies’ favor I think that I’d welcome the challenge.  But you guys are right we probably went too far… it EITHER the carrier or the Chinese infantry, not both.

    • Balanced!

So I thought I’d share the game we played last night with you fine folks.

My friend Rick and I tag-teamed as Japan against 3 allied players and before we started we agreed on a few house rules.

      1. We gave India a fully-loaded carrier off Malaya to protect it’s battleship and transports, ferry US/ANZAC fighters over from Queensland, and generally dissuade the J1.
      2. We said that as soon as Japan declares war, the US gets it’s 40 IPC bonus to spend that turn.
      3. We put one extra infantry in every Chinese territory to make them stronger.

It was actually a really good game… India was still going down by the time we had to go, but it wasn’t near as easy for Japan to grab it.  The US fleet was actually in a really good position in the Carolines to defend against any attack and threaten virtually every important territory.

SO do you think we went too far, or not far enough, or what?  Please do tell.

    • RE: What's the first thing you'll do upon getting Europe 1940?

I’ll probably open it and put the two maps together to look at the global game, and then my friends and I will play just Europe 1940 to see how good the game is and learn the new rules (there’s always new rules).

2 things I’ve noticed… The Dutch and French markers in South America… and the lack of a German roundel in Finland.

I’m going to assume then that Finland will have it’s own roundel for the purposes of a Russian attack not violating it’s (Russia’s) neutrality.
I wonder if France is going to have the same “can walk into Dutch territories” that UK and ANZAC had in PAC40.

I wish we could see Europe itself a bit more clearly…
Africa and Russia both look HUGE and the Atlantic looks like a fun place to have naval battles.

    • Rules question in regards to damage

So my friend posed a good question to me that usually doesn’t come up all that often.

I had 3 carriers with planes on them and wanted to use it to attack his navy.  Being sure that I wasn’t going to have any pieces left after the battle (win by attrition) I chose to take the first few hits on my carriers.  My planes did not have anywhere else to land, but I figured that if I was going to lose them anyways, might as well take the carriers that have no attack value first.
Can I do that?  Can I send planes into battle knowing that the carriers are going to get trashed?  Can I take the hits on the carriers, and just let the planes crash if they end up surviving?

What if there were two different battles involved?  As in, I attack his fleet with just planes because they could land on a carrier that’s involved in another battle?

To put it simply… can carriers be taken as losses if they are vital to planes being able to land safely?

BTW, I’ve only ever seen one ship in SZ59, it was an ANZAC newly-built-transport running away from the Japanese in the Philippines.

    • RE: What are the most important sea zones?

      Voted.

The top 5 are really the most important of the game because

      1. if the sea zone around Japan is ever controlled by the US, the allies will win
      2. if the US can get a fleet to the carolines, and it survives, the allies will win
      3. the best two places for the Japanese fleet are the Philippines (threatens Queensland, Carolines, and all DEI), and outside Japan (threatens Hawaii)
      4. if the US or ANZAC can get transports (defended mind you) outside Queensland, they can take out the bulk of the Japanese income advantage
      5. if the Japanese can grab Hawaii, it’ll set back the US for quite a few turns… meanwhile anything the US has in Hawaii threatens not only Japan but Korea (major IC!) as well

I see Mayala has a vote or two, IMO the territory is more important than the sea zone for both the Japanese and the allies
