    • RE: Friendly neutrals, IC, sz125, amphib–-some Q's after starting global???

      @BJCard:

      @El:

      During Global game start this wkend, we’re @ UK2 now & several Q’s came up, can anyone clarify please?

      1) friendly neutrals–-if doing NCM w/land units to take control of friendly neutral, can planes also move into same neutral territory as NCM w/the land units?

      2) Industrial Complex— if enemy major IC is downgraded to minor upon capture, (& I can’t find this page in the Rulebook?) can the pwr capturing it upgrade it to a Major on the next “purchase units” round?

      3) SZ-125—If Russian NO gets 5ipc for no Axis warships in sz125, is this a convoy loss to Germany/Axis  controlled Norway if Russian warship only is in sz125?  The way its worded as a “NO for USSR if no Axis is in the sz” makes it seem like a convoy for northern Russia, not the Norway???

      4) amphib/bombardment—2 Q’s >  Scenarios>>>
               a)—if defenseless transport (TT) in sz & attacker has 3-cruisers(CA) & 2-TT’s, can the attacker dedicate 1CA to take out the TT (to make empty the hostile sz of enemy ships) & then allow the other 2CA’s to bombard prior to an amphib landing?  Or do all warships have to be in the battle to remove the TT thus preventing their bombardment?

      b) same question with defender having 1TT & 1DD ~vs~ attacker having 3CA’s & 2TT’s; do all attacking warships have to battle to clear the sz now that a defending warships is involved (rather than just a defenseless TT) which wouldn’t allow their bombardment, or is the attacker allowed to dedicate just 1-2 cruiser’s for the sz attack, allowing the remaining to bombard prior to amphib?

      1. No, Fighters cannot land in NCM in a newly acquired Neutral.
      2. Yes, a country that regains its lost IC can upgrade it to a Major if they have the money for it.The Question was–could the capturing pwr upgrade the IC on the capturing pwr’s next turn, not if it was recaptured by the original owner, sorry if that was confusing—but how does this go?
      3. SZ 125 with a Russian sub does convoy raid the German territory of Norway.  If there is a German warship there it blocks the Russian NO… So two functions.
        4a) if you have warships attacking the transport, then all have to attack it.  Of course, you as the attacker can ignore Transports altogether.
        4b) Again, all warships have to fight in sea battle.  Air can fight in sea or land battle.

      Hope that helped.

    • RE: J3/4 India Crush / almost turned into US2 Japan Crush!!!???

      @BJCard:

      I all I can say is… if you aren’t prepared for a US attack on mainland Japan, ALWAYS have an available Destroyer to block the Pearl Harbor fleet.

      According to the “J3 India Crush” setup & moves directed by the “Variance” post about J3/4 India Crush–it directed to move ENTIRE fleet to sz36 in J1 to set up the Crush for J3.

      So I wasn’t paying attention or even contemplating the possibility of a US fleet/amphib coming from Pearl Harbor in 1move after I DOW’d on J3.  I totally missed even the possibility of it being w/i reach on 1-move, basically because “Variance’s” step’s for the J3 were so methodically laid out & never mentioned @ all to “leave something behind” or to "watch out for the BOLD US2 move of hitting Japan after Japan’s J2 Dow.

      And not realizing this was coming Right after my DOW on J2, the Germany was also unprepared & US destroyed Germany’s BB & TT off Gibrltr (used to take Gib on G2) & amphibed Gib & took it back!

      As I said, not prepared because I followed “J3 India Crush” moves to the letter & did the moves that Germany was supposed to do also.  I would have thought that if there was a possibility of this happening on US2, then the steps would have been laid out different.

      Check out “Variance’s” play by play in J3/4 India Crush post from last week (March 1 thread) & also “Soulfein’s” G2 DOW Russia in Cow’s Germany playbook thread, from last week, that is meant to go together with this G2 / J2 plan.  Don’t know what I did differently?

    • J3/4 India Crush / almost turned into US2 Japan Crush!!!???

      So wanted to try the “J3 India Crush” scenario from last weeks thread on J3 / J4 India Crush Q, I was very interested in the detail  “Variance” gave, so I printed it out & followed it to the letter  (see last weeks thread).

      I thought this would be a good time to try it, just to see how it would work w/ me playing the Axis & my 15yo inexperienced player son being the Allies.

      So w/ everything playing out perfect thru J2, all set & poised to take India on J3, which looks like will happen after I wipe out the UK India fleet, before making an amphib landing & adding all my air units to the battle–-I should accomplish this goal.

      But to my surprise, out of left field, comes my inexperienced 15yo son, noticing that I have just allowed the US to get into the fray by attacking UK & taking Shan State in J2 (per the Variances’ India Crush outline).  He also saw that Japan was only 3-sea spaces away from Hawaii, where he had moved the entire US fleet in US1 along w/ two transports & land units.
      So he said, “looks like Japan is wide open for invasion, no sea units, only 6inf & 1art” (because all the rest headed for India (per the J3-IC plan)-----so he hit Japan on US2 w/ his full fleet & transport loaded!    Because of the initial bombardments & land attack, he was able to almost take Japan on US2, leaving me w/ only 1-art before my next to last dice roll took his last inf unit!  :-o

      Thus this has left Japan w/ all my Air, Navel & most of my mainland units all in SE Asia & off India poised for the J3-Crush, Japan w/ only 1-art & the entire US fleet in sz6 off Japan.

      And, my son said he’s just going to leave the fleet their as fodder for anything I want to try to throw @ them for the next couple rounds while he builds & moves another fleet w/tt’s that should reach Japan by US5, & after the J3-crush, I would only be able to limp whats left of my fleet, planes, etc back to Japan by J5 to meet the onslaught.

      All in all, this didn’t work out the way I thought it was going to, per the lay-out by “Variance” .  I’m now put in a position of ‘defense by attrition’, trying to get back to Japan, not being able to deal w/ ANZAC, the Philippines, or take the DEI (which was to be my J4 & J5.

      Once I awoke the “Sleeping Giant” on J2, even w/ my inexperienced son, he now has 72ipc’s per round, has acquired “improved shipyards”, has his fleet off Japan, & on the Europe map, has taken Gibrltr back, has his  naval & subs staring to amass @ the Strait & my German & Italian units are spread thin while trying to accomplish their Basic goals as outline in the “Soulfein’s G2-dow on Russia” strategy from the German playbook that Cow’s recently been putting together!

      So if anyone can make sense of this—what the heck just happened :?

      RMC,

      I’ve looked through my profile, and I don’t see a way around it…

      Other than using the “lost your password” process, and having it resend you a new one, resetting the whole damn thing.

      Make sure your email is correct first though.

      Hey COW, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the additional posts you reserved for this thread on  “Reserved–optimal Sea Lion / Fein, Med. Sea strategies & another Reserved spot” you posted spaces for on Feb.28th.

      Are these spots going to be added to soon or do you have a time frame that your thinking you might be able to get back to them?  As I said, I’m eagerly awaiting as well as alot of other players I’M SURE    :-)

    • RE: 32 sq ft AA50th Table

      Yes, very cool  8-)  I made a bigger flat top gaming table 12-13yrs ago (it was about a 4x5’) with some fold down legs so you could put the table away when not in use, but still–-wear to store a 4x5 table, even flat, was always an issue?  Then I didn’t have a basement!

      Now I have a basement, & the game boards (IE; AA40G w/ a 32"x70" board) are getting bigger OOB, so I threw a 4x8ft piece of plywood on top of my 4x5 game table & just covered it w/ a fabric sheet.  Much better w/ the bigger AAG40 board & we still have room around the edges to put the charts & game piece boxes.

      But I like your design very much, especially with blowing up the map on vinyl.  Seems like no matter how big A&A game designer’s make the boards, the main territories that see all the action are still too small for all the pieces & chips that get put into it.  I’m all for not contorting the map to make areas bigger, but if you can make the whole map bigger that would be great!

      I too am now having the same problem w/ my wife & a 4x8 game table taking up so much space in the basement.  My solution is that this year I’m converting my 2-car garage into a Den & Gaming room (with a lock on the door for my MAN Space)!  I do have a very high ceiling in my garage & this design to haul the table out of the way would be great!
      So if you don’t mind, I’m gonna try to use your basic design here, & tweak it a little for my situation.  I have all the A&A games & have been playing w/ my kids (4-boys) for almost 25yrs, so the drawers are cool if your only dedicated to ONE A&A game, but I would want to use this new gaming table for all, so not sure yet what I could do there, I’ll have to think on it  :?

      I wish I was more computer savvy to be able to enlarge the scan/enlarge the map as you have, but I’m not, & I don’t know of anyone around here to be able to print something like that on Vinyl.  I had ordered some A&A maps that, I think, Imperious Leader had printed on Vinyl & 1/4" card stock in a 3x6 for AA50, I think he said I could order one in 4x8 but that they weren’t sure they were gonna print it anymore?  It was very cost prohibitive at several hundred dollars anyway–just can’t justify that.

      But long & short of it, very, very COOL & good job    :mrgreen:

      So that’s what I can do on the water but what about on the land in Africa? Should I pull back my troops from Cairo to Egypt and from transjordan to Egypt while slowing moving the one inf from west india to Africa?

      What kind of troops should I produce in South Africa to send aid? (P.S. we have a house rule to allow mechs to move 2 without tank). Should I upgrade the minor IC to a major in South Africa?

      Do you mean to pull troops back from Alexandria to Egypt?  (because–from Cairo to Egypt doesn’t make sense–they are one in the same)  :?

      This post has been up for one month, with almost one hundred views & no responses?  Come on, is this that hard to answer, even among seasoned players, that I can’t get any response?

      I’ve reviewed a few threads in the search category under “SEA LION” but kinda tangled finding something related to AAG40-2e w/ 2e or alpha 3.9 setups.

      I’d like a fresh view & version of how it should go w/ unit purchase, Combat moves, NCM & the like for the 1st 2-3 rounds.  It seems like a popular start among Vetrans of the game, so if someone could respond thats been using it w/ the new rules & setup–-I’d appreciate it  :-)  Thanx, Rod

      @rmcbride:

      Thus, Eggman is right & kinda where my point was heading–“You’ve awakened a Sleeping Giant”  & what US player isn’t going to DOW Japan as soon as it can?

      The fact that a Japanese attack on UK/ANZAC doesn’t instantly make them at war with the US matters slightly, though- since if Japan doesn’t also DoW the USA on that same turn, then the US units are still not hostile during Japan’s combat & non-combat movement.  Of course, I’ve never been in a game where Japan decided to DoW the UK/ANZAC only, but that is an option for them.

      But what advantage is this to Japan for this turn, since US will most likely DOW Japan on Next turn US right after Japan’s NCM?

      @Eggman:

      @elzario:

      Taking the DEI (and attacking UK/ANZAC) does not result in war with the USA. Only attacking USA will result in bringing them into the war

      That’s strictly true but very misleading, since what USA player is not going to DoW Japan as soon as they are allowed?

      Thats right, It is very misleading, because per the AAG40-2e rules on pg37, US, Political Situation, 3rd sentence “The US may NOT DOW on any axis pwr unless an Axis pwr DOW’s it 1st–-------------- or Japan makes an unprovoked DOW against the UK or ANZAC, after which the US can DOW any or all Axis pwrs on its following turn”.

      Thus, Eggman is right & kinda where my point was heading–“You’ve awakened a Sleeping Giant”  & what US player isn’t going to DOW Japan as soon as it can?  So in hitting the UK or ANZAC, you’ve just allowed the US to do what they’ve been waiting & building to do----jump into the War @ their earliest opportunity, which would be now—so Japs have to have their duck’s in order to prep for this, Just Saying  :-)

      @Spendo02:

      @rmcbride:

      @Spendo02:

      Take the DEI, subdue China and deny Calcutta resources via taking their islands and convoying them.

      Ok, this sounds interesting. So a couple Q’s here–-
           1) in taking the DEI, you’ve now awaken the “sleeping Giant” & are now @ war w/all the Allies.  who will probably start steaming towards that position–so how many rounds does it take to starve them out til you take them over & don’t have to deal w/ them anymore so you can now devote attentions to the US & ANZAC?
           2) when you say “subdue China”–how much are we talking about here?
           3) the issue w/ taking their islands & convoying them—I’m assuming we’re taking Borneo (4ipc), but are we also taking Malaya (3ipc) & Hong Kong (3ipc)?
          4) Then there’s the Philippines-- w/ the US now in the war, are the US Air & Sea units there anything to deal w/ usually & what are they likely to do once you’ve made this move?
          5) are all your ships in the SE Sea for this maneuver, as it will take them a couple rounds to get there–then the jigs up? Or are some held back to deal w/ the US & ANZAC?    IE; what about the CV (w/fghtrs) & the DD in sz33?

      As I said, this all sounds very interesting & I’m gonna give it a whirl, but if its not too much trouble, could you give me a more detailed “round by round” of How, Where & w/ What you normally do this w/ the factors & Q’s listed above?

      Once at war with the UK, you can effectively starve them of resources quickly between convoys and denying them DEI/NO’s.  If the UK is placing 2-3 Inf a turn, who cares as long as you have China locked up.

      Now locking China up gets tricky, and my personal preference is a Minor somewhere in SE Asia so that you don’t have to worry about defending unit placement in SZ6 which is likely always going to be under threat from US warships making their way out of the SF Harbor and to Hawaii.  So consider at least a single Minor and possibly 2 of them in SE Asia.

      As for dealing with China, the one thing to remember is that you have the advantage because their counter attacks are relegated to Inf and a single Ftr.  The UK throws a wrench in subduing China the longer you allow them put offensive units on the board.  In the end, as Japan I’ll trade Aircraft to eliminate the UK offensive punch and crush Burma - but that has to be an all-in move - which is why having 1-2  Minors in SE Asia allows you to either replace aircraft or keep pumping Mech’s until you break the UK’s back as it tries to reinforce Burma.

      Once you’ve gotten your DEI and the NO, subdued Burma and choked India you can claim India rather easily and keep the US deciding what to do in the Pacific while your fleet is lying in wait to pounce on any US incursions that splits its fleet.  I’d never attack a US fleet unless I had secured my rear, rather enjoying 3 scrambled aircraft from Flip plus a large fleet contingent thats not convoying India.

      Long story short, subdue China, choke the UK, take and hold the DEI and then you can launch yourself 6-9 SS and put the US fleet on its heels as you relocate to strike out towards either Anzac or Hawaii.

      There is a lot more to this, but thats the general outline - subdue, choke and expand.  Even with an early US entry into the war, the longer you make the US spend in the Pacific, the bigger favor you are doing for Germany’s Europe VC win.

      Awesome  :-o    My only other back-thought on this one is–-when the Allies kinda figure out whats happening on J1 or J2, what happens to the to the plan if Russia decides to DOW on either R2-3?  Seems like good opportunity for Allies to Hit Japan in the north (with all the extra troops that Russia gets with Global–that always get moved into Amur on R1 NCM), since all the main push is heading south & west thru China!  Seems hard/scary for Japan to defend her rear in the North while pushing South & West?  Or do you not see this happening with the “India Crush” move you describe?
