RE: Was this the best game?posted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
With europe, pacific and 42 all getting reprints this year what do you think the odds are that anniversary also gets reprinted?
I dont think it will get reprinted…the 1942 2nd edition is what they used to “reprint” the AE…the AE i truly think was a one time thing…

RE: Just How Old Are We Axis and Allies Players?posted in Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition
I first played in 1984. I got the Milton Bradley version as soon as it hit the shelves.
same here…loved the game ever since and it also fed my hunger to learn more about world war ii…now i have many books and dvds on the subject and i love the stories and history

RE: Is this our Anniversary reprint?posted in Axis & Allies 1942 2nd Edition
@Imperious:
AA41 fits tournaments better. You can get in alot of games and have semi and final be AA42 2nd.
Playing more games in a fixed amount of time get you more accurate results of determining who is the best player and the lowest common denominator game should be used to determine who has greater skills.
we have a&a tournaments down here in south florida and we used the 1942 game for the first round or two…but now that we have 1941 and 1942 2nd…we will be seeting up our tourneys this way…
finals–G1940 2nd edition
semi-finals–E1940 2nd edition and P1940 2nd edition
quarterfinals–1942 2nd edition
all rounds before quarters will now use 1941i have the AA50 and i still believe it might the BEST version of the game period…but im hoping the 2nd editions of europe and pacific dethrone it

RE: North Africa Axis Questionposted in World War II History
tough call… i think another German air wing might have done the job for Rommel…but even that might not have helped Germany much…the USA was getting stronger and better…
-
RE: Most over-rated WWII Leaderposted in World War II History
wow…where to choose…if i had to make one pick…i think it would be Gen. Montgomery…assume Hitler sends Rommel what he wants and TORCH doesnt happen…how do u think he would have done?

70TH ANNIVERSARY DISCUSSION (6) THE ALTMARK INCIDENTposted in World War II History
In your opinions…were the British justified in boarding the Altmark while it was in Norway’s waters?
Did they violate the Neutrality of Norway before they were invaded by Hitler? Was there any other way of rescuing the British prisoners held in the Altmark?Looking fwd to your answers…

i sometimes wonder what would have happened if Germany had put together a massive battle fleet in the Atlantic like Japan did in the Pacific

RE: Best World War II movie?posted in World War II History
I don’t know that it is the Best but my favorite is Patton.
Band of Brothers would be second.
And The Longest Day is bloody well awesome. I have the Blu-ray version of it and it is a terrific transfer.
I think the bit about the craps game in Longest Day though is more a superstition issue or a karma issue. Last time he had such great luck gambling he balanced it out with terrible luck the next morning breaking a leg. It might have felt like having even better luck would lead to the next morning having even worse luck. It is what he needed to do to be less scared about going into battle. Later he even says, “Now we’re both jumping clean.”
I always thought it a statement on the irrationality that fear can cause or as an elegant comment on the fatalism many soldiers probably felt.
I have Patton on blu-ray…the movie looks like it was made yesterday…great transfer

RE: 70TH ANNIVERSARY DISCUSSION (4) THE BATTLE OF THE RIVER PLATE 1939posted in World War II History
@ABWorsham:
A fact that we have not discussed is that defective none explosive 11’’ shells hurt the Graf Spee during the Battle of River Plate.
youre right…im surprised that the German armaments were that faulty during the early part of the war

RE: 70TH ANNIVERSARY DISCUSSION (4) THE BATTLE OF THE RIVER PLATE 1939posted in World War II History
makes sense to me AB…since the German ships that they used as raiders were a little overgunned…but maybe they would have sacrificed speed for weaponry…good question my friend.
