i think your ideas are pretty well written out…i dont know…but i feel there might be something brewing up at avalon hill…we are actually in the 75th anniversary of the start of ww2…
i would like to see an A&A legacy edition…sounds kewl
USSR: Build a catapult to throw men at the problem. Rifles optional. But seriously, stall the German advance with infantry. Gobs of infantry. You don’t necessarily want to win, you want to live long enough for the US and UK to save you. When the Germans start having to spread themselves thin, break through into Europe.
That is so funny
thanks all…as always great insight from everyone

Nazi Germany was in fact a very badly organized state – a mass of uncordinated, competing interests and petty political and economic satrapies of Byzantine complexity. And this was quite deliberate, since Hitler’s preferred style of ruling was to play all of his subordinates against each other and to make sure none of them had too much individual power. The only centralized element of the regime was Hitler himself, and this too proved to be counterproductive since his behaviour was erratic and his military talents marginal at best. If Nazi Germany had actually been well managed, it would have been a lot more dangerous than was the case historically.
Oh…im not saying the Nazi state was organized…but it was very efficient at what it did, even though it was brutal, perverted and had to be destroyed at a terrible cost.

It’s anniversary time again! Im gonna start some polls, one per month on the 75th anniversary of the greatest conflict the world has ever known and hopefully will never see again. WW2 was truly a war of good versus evil. So again…i would love to read the opinions of all you WW2 experts, historians, A&A players and masters. I wont be answering my own polls and i wont be replying to these questions myself. I only want to read everyone’s comments and learn from all you great people out there. Of course i have my own opinions on these questions…but they are of no account. It’s your thoughts i want to read and understand.
Among the main long-term causes of World War II were the rise of Italian fascism in the 1920s, Japanese militarism and invasions of China in the 1930s, and especially the takeover in 1933 of Germany by Adolf Hitler and his Nazis.

I thought i would start my 75th ANNIV poll before the official start of WW2 asking very simply:
Could have the Second World War been PREVENTED in ANY way, or could it have been DELAYED till compromises been reached that would have prevented the war in the future?
@wittmann:
Declaring war on the US.
It was an arrogant and unnecessary act and brought about the early fall of his European ally, Italy. The 60000 infantry who landed in North Africa in late 42 made all the difference in unbalancing the African situation, as inevitably numbers increased. After North Africa came Sicily and Salerno. The Germans found themselves in the unenviable position of fighting a three front war with all the complications that involved.
The resources sent to the European theatre in 42 could not have been used in the same way against Japan in the Pacific and we know how quickly the Americans in Africa learnt from their experiences of fighting an experienced German Army. All lessons learnt were put to good use later.
what he said…hitler did not need to declare war on the US so early.
to me it would have to the junkers ju-87…that sound it made when coming in for the attack was deafening and it would terrify you on the ground
if you are playing A&A by yourself, while watching WHERE EAGLES DARE on one TV, TORA TORA TORA on another TV, watching SAVING PRIVATE RYAN on your smartphone, and watching MIDWAY on your tablet all at the same moment?
hmmmmmm… i wonder if the psych ward is open today? :roll:
i would have to say 2,000,000. The japanese would have fought to the last man…and it would have been a bloodbath…thankfully for the atomic bomb…thats a number we will never know
@CWO:
Apparently none of you has a cat…
Yes, the cat issue is something that’s come up a few times on this board, as the picture below will illustrate. I can’t recall if the suggestions were made seriously or not, but some board members have thought about protecting their games-in-progress from one weekend to the next by using a system of overhead pulleys to either raise the table to the ceiling or lower a protective hood over the map. Feasible for a dedicated gaming room in the basement, but not likely to be approved for the living room by the lady of the house.
That is SO CUTE!!!
How well does the cat play? Does he attack the US on turn one? :-D
i have a question…whats everyone’s opinion on what size army unit each A&A piece represents?
Examples: 1 Infantry = 1 Infantry Division? or Corps? or Army?
1 Battleship = 1 BatDiv?
1 Fighter = 1 Fighter wing?
Just wondering what u guys think how big an Armed Forces unit each A&A piece is equivalent to
i disagree…this game can be played solitaire…i play it solo all the time and sometimes i get some very interesting positions which help me against human opponents…
when you play a certian nation during a turn…play that nation and the board as if you were playing human opponents…rolling the dice and choosing casualties and non combat movement…etc…
trust me…the games you get can be very long and very fascinating…
yes…this game was never designed for solitaire…but…with all these intelligent A&A players out there…try it and watch how WW2 unfolds…
it would have to be the attack on pearl harbor…it brought the US into the war…if the US does NOT enter world war ii…do the allies win? Do the math!
and im 43 btw…my grandfather on my mothers side was a gunner in B-24s in the european theater of operations…my grandfather on my father’s side was a doctor in the pacific theater of operations
hopefully soon…im already counting down the days to these two 2nd edition games
the engulfed series is a little deeper in scope of play and the rules for both games kind of vary becaseus of european and pacific theaters…to me a & a is the way to go…
wait until september then buy the 2nd editions of both europe and pacific for the ultimate axis and allies experience
