      @AJGundam:

      I knew there was a reason why I always get canadian pennies … they’re spying on me

      Wow, Canadian pennies are about as useful as a yen - pretty much worthless - and I live in Canada.  Imagine how useful they must be for you, living in the US!!!

    • RE: Russian Gambit

      1. I wouldn’t do EEU because the odds aren’t good enough.  I will only try battles with those kinds of odds if the risk vs. reward is worth it (ie. Capturing a capital, or taking out a bunch of fighters/armour that will cripple my opponent in the long run.

      2. I probably wouldn’t even like this UKR battle because these odds are still kinda low

      3. I might take WRU, but with what remaining?  He can probably counter from Belorussia, and if I got a bad result in UKR, he’s got additional troops to counter WRU with (and the arm from BAL).

      –------

      If I felt like the underdog going into a game, I might try something like this if I figured I’d get creamed if I played a normal game.  Then at least a good result on R1 might give me a chance at winning.  My father likes to play bridge (card game) and he’s famous for saying if there is only one possible way to play a hand to make the contract, you play the hand that way and hope the cards fall kindly.  I equate that to this Russian Gambit.

      Agree.

      Note: I said in 1 turn, not in Turn 1! (meaning that from Japan a transport could reach all the way to unload in WCAN)

      @froodster:

      1. OOL appears not to work in IE6 - I don’t have that legacy browser so I can’t verify.

      This sounds like that problem I had a while back - I think it had to do with the ‘delimiter’ between the unit types in the OOL field not being recognized by IE6.  Possibly a ‘hyphen’ or a ‘space’.  Frood, I know you and I worked through the problem back then, so I’m not sure what problem he might still be having.  But maybe this will tweak your memory?

      Watch out for SZ63!  Sometimes Japan will use it to land troops directly into WCAN and ALA from Japan in 1 turn!  Can sneak up on the US if you’re not careful!

    • RE: Books still beat out Wikipedia

      @Jennifer:

      For purposes of discussion here, yea.  I’d say a source that contradicts Wikipedia would be weight more heavily in my eyes then a wikipedia only source.  There’s more too it, you have to find out what bias the other source may or may not have, but generally speaking if Wikipedia says the Ocean is Green and Scientific American says the Ocean is Blue I’m going to go with Scientific American. (*yes, I know it’s ridiculous, I’m using it for demonstration only.  We know Wikipedia’s not going to say green, it’s going to say blue or clear depending on the depth you look into, unless it’s refrencing the pollution which may be green, brown or orange.)

      It does depend on the contradictory source, but for the most part I’d agree with this.  But it doesn’t mean that someone automatically needs to provide a second source whenever they are using wikipedia.  Only when a more reputable contradictory source is provided.

      But that makes wikipedia no different from any other source.  It’s still a valid primary source until a contradictory source is provided.  Note that is not the same as:

      @Jennifer:

      I’m not throwing it out. I’m saying its a valid secondary source to confirm information you got from books or valid primary sources.

      But a secondary source has rarely been required on this site.  So you are saying that it’s ok to only have one source (as long as it’s not wikipedia)?  And it’s ok to use wikipedia as long as there is another source?  So basically you are ignoring wikipedia totally and just using the other source for info.  Thus you are “throwing it out”.

      I’d suggest that lack of effort on the student to properly research would probably be the main reason.

      I’d also suggest that if we were in a classroom setting here, there are a lot of things that people would probably have to do differently  8-)  Good thing we’re not in a classroom setting  :wink:

    • RE: Fair Bid for Novices/Sleepers

      @squirecam:

      3. Germany can merge G2 depending on the allies build. HOWEVER,  the merge does NOT depend upon a bid. An extra transport will not “make or break” a merge attempt odds nor will a bid such as 2inf UKR or inf UKR inf Belo. Another “absolutist” statement which is indeed wrong.

      I think NPB is suggesting that without an African bid, the BB TRN must attack sz15 and amphib assault Egypt on G1.  Thus no fleet merge G2.

      @squirecam:

      2. Germany has 4 units in Africa at start. G1 can bring 2 units to egypt G1 and 2 more G2. Thats a total of 8. They can hold Egypt “past G1”. Your second point is flat out incorrect.

      And actually with a med fleet build G1, G2 can bring more than 2 units to Egypt.
