    • RE: PBEM - Hints, tips, and tools

      My brother’s currently working on some coding.  He won’t even share the code with me, so I dunno :lol:

      End of turn summaries are nice if you still want to post your turns on a forum.  Not necessary in order to play with TripleA, but a lot of players like to post their turns so they can go back after the fact and skim through their previous games.  Plus it shares the game with the rest of the community.

      I think the save files are around 20k or so (I think).  If you are interested in beta-testing, we could fire up a multi-player game once our current game is done.

      @saburo:

      The beauty of Mapview is that you don’t have to write out your turns because you will have a visual representation of all your moves.

      What do you mean by this?  It actually shows you where you attacked or non-com’ed?  Shows results of combat?  Shows where you placed units?  Please expand.

      Thanks.

    • RE: PBEM - Hints, tips, and tools

      IIRC, the subject line from the dicey email tells you how many units of each type it is rolling for.  eg. “Attacker rolling for 3 inf 4 arm” then the number string is in that order.  eg. “2 1 3 5 6 2 4” would be 1 inf and 1 arm hit.

      TripleA does allow bidding, but as of yet does not allow unspent bid amounts to be rolled into starting cash for one of the axis powers (you have to spend the entire bid amount on units to place prior to R1).  We hope to fix that.  In my opinion, TripleA is the best option for PBEM, but is missing some handy features to make it even better.  Give us a bit more time and we’ll hopefully have something that works even better for PBEM than the current TripleA does.  Unfortunately, since TripleA is a game engine, all players must use TripleA (ie. one cannot use TripleA, one ABattlemap, and one a physical board, for example).  Some players are hesitant to use TripleA for various reasons including, but not limited to; their computer is too old, TripleA doesn’t have the features they need (ie. carry-over bid amounts, or edit map features, or turn summary unit listings, etc.), or some just prefer using a physical board.

      Yeah, the dice email isn’t very pretty (just a string of numbers).  But remember that TripleA interprets the dice and automatically updates the board for you, so the dice email is just for your reference only.

      Nobody is working on AI improvements that I know of, but if you are interested in contributing to the TripleA project and want to take a stab at the AI, then go to triplea.sourceforge.net for more info

      @frood:

      Can TripleA be adapted for this purpose? Does anyone know anyone on the TripleA dev team?

      My brother is currently doing some development for TripleA.  We are playing a game here to test the changes as we go http://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?topic=8142.0

      My limited understanding of TripleA is that it’s an entire game system that enforces all of the axis and allies rules on movement and combat etc.  Hacking it to remove the game system and just leave a “dumb” map is probably more effort than it is worth.  Then you’d also have to write the code to add/remove units since TripleA isn’t really a map editor in it’s current form.  If you wanted to make a new map, I’d suggest creating a new one for ABattlemap.  But you may want to wait and see how our experiment with TripleA goes first.

    • RE: Finally, what should i do whit italy

      If we want to be historically accurate in all tactics and strategy, what is the point of playing the game?  I thought the fun of the game was to pick a point in history and say hey, if different decisions were made, would the outcome have been different?

      To me, Italy could have definitely made a difference in the war.  Thus an Italy variant seems reasonable.  And shouldn’t throw off game balance too much doing it.  Plus it makes a 3 on 3 game.

      China on the other hand only starts with a handful of units and a couple of territories, so nobody is going to want to play them unless significant changes are made to both the axis and allies units in the interest of balancing the game.  Assuming you can get an interesting China setup that is also reasonably balanced, you are then looking at a 4 on 2 game.

      Just from game dynamics alone, Italy seems to make much more sense as a variant.  IMO.

    • RE: Frood AACalc Dicey / Sim / Odds Calculator: Updates and Opinions

      @frood:

      • should LHTR be the default initial ruleset?
      • should 1000x or 5000x be the default sim mode, rather than “Once”?
      • should the abort ratio start with a default value of say 50% to at least minimize catastrophic results for the attacker?
      • any other suggestions for defaults?

      My opinion is that you want first time users to have success using your tool for the first time.  I think that would mean:

      • leave the abort ratio as is.  If they realize that the results include aborts, they may interpret the results differently than intended.  Besides, for amphibious assaults there is no abort option, and often I want to see what will happen if I keep pressing the attack regardless, so it’s not a terrible default to have even for experienced users
      • some users may not know what LHTR is, so I would not use that as default.
      • 5000x would be my recommendation as default

      Personally, when I go in there, I always run 10 rounds at 5000x (to the death!), then after seeing the results, make changes as needed.  Very nice sim!

      Thanks Jennifer.  Based on your suggestion we’ve increased the indentation (instead of skipping a line).  I think it’s more readable now.

      If anyone else has suggestions, please feel free to share!

      There seems to be a few more classic players here now since when I joined a month ago.  Good luck.

      sure.  Whatever is left of them.  If the allies don’t have much air, they probably don’t have much offense to attack the subs.  If they have air, then a coordinated air/naval assault will rip your subs to shreds and there goes you whole naval purchase.  Meanwhile what’s happening in Europe since you just spent your wad on subs?

      It can work in certain situations I think.

      Yes you can build subs in the c med sz, from the SEU industrial complex.  If the transports are very well protected and/or the allies don’t have much air, it may be a viable strat.

    • Turn Summary context for Play By Forum

      My brother is working on some changes to TripleA to get it to automatically create the turn summary text for posting in the forums.  We are looking for feedback on how it all looks (ie. is there info missing, too much/not enough info, bad layout, etc.)

      Please check out this thread to see the A&A Classic game that we are playing to test the turn summary info and let us know if you have any thoughts!  Thanks.

    • RE: TripleA?

      http://triplea.sourceforge.net

      Download the latest stable release.

      TripleA is an open source game engine that allows you to play axis and allies either alone (not very good AI), networked, or via PBEM.

      You would use TripleA instead of using ABattlemap (or any other mapping util), since TripleA is a map and game engine all by itself.  In my opinion, TripleA is a better interface than ABattlemap for a number of reasons:

      1. TripleA has better graphics
      2. TripleA enforces axis and allies rules (ie. won’t let you place if you don’t have complex, won’t let you move if you don’t have movement, won’t let you spend more than you have).
      3. TripleA has history, so you can play back through any turn you want, and see the purchases, combat movement, combat, non-combat movement, and placement, just like they happened.

      However, TripleA does have limitations:

      1. Limited dice servers available (no LL servers)
      2. unable to edit map to make changes (if you are playing PBEM and your opponent used the wrong OOL, you might want to edit the map to change the units to correct the error)
      3. TripleA doesn’t have a method creating a text file with the turn history or unit summary to post to a forum.

      Follow the link above, and check it out for yourself.  If a few small modifications are made to TripleA, I think everyone on this board will be using it instead of ABattlemap!
