    • RE: German IPCs (SCARY)

You should NOT add up US/UK AND SU starting income.

When the US at least joins in Germany/Italy should have chewed a bit of this money away.

Lets assumne the US has … 10/50 income (peace/war),

UK 30 and SU also 30

If Germany starts at 25 and italy at 10.

That would be 70-35 at the start of the game (US peace Russia also peace - full production?)

Germany should Grab up 10 from france during turn 1 (maybe 2) = End 1940

      then its 70-45

Add 5 (at least) from Minor axis (Romania, Hungary, Finland etc), we go to

      70-50

Say Turn 3 Germany attacks Russia/balkans (Summer 1941) - this initial assault should (with Italians in Africa) take 10-15 points away from the Allies

      Then it would be

      55-65! - Axis advantage

Even if the US joins in on turn 4 with full income (production should be 1 turn LATER) - Germany/Italy should take at least another 10 points from the Allies

      its

85 (55-10+40) - 75! minor Axis disadvantage, but a good player should be still have an light unit advantage…

Thats why I assume Germany somewhere in the mid 20s with starting income (if Russia/UK start with MUCH more than assumed, I would add a bit - but then the initial assaults should also yield more points for the Axis taken from the Allies)

    • RE: German IPCs (SCARY)

I think Germany will be in the mid twenties at game start (with an unit advantage)

additional income will come from France (+10), later (after an attck on Russia) Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria will add a few more points (again +5 - +10)

If Germany has to attack on turn 3 (Russia) and Turn 4 the US (end 1941) it will have to conquer territories to increase its production (maybe + NOs)

    • RE: Whats the point of neutrals?

I don’t believe there will be a historical assessment to teurality in the game - it will just add flavor…

Spain: Franco was a clever politican -he used Germany and Italy in the SCW, but refused to take an active part in the war (allowing the Blue legion is not something considered active participation - I belive therwe were French, Dutch Belgian, Norwegian volunteers fighting for Germany/against communism). - Ingame I think Spain will be a true nutral, because it never delared war on Germany.

      Same for Sweden and Switzerland

Turkey might be true neutral too, but maybe it will have some triggers to join in if Russia get bashed…

I think true neutrals might never declare war, but can be attacked by either side (attack on a neutra could cause pro-xy neutrals joining the cause of one side or another)

for example Bulgaria : pro Axis, if Germany attacks Greece then Bulgaria will become Axis…

Romania (Hungary) pro axis - will join when Germany attacks Russia

Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria are the classics ;)

Portugal sided early with the Allies IIRC
Iraq/Iran might (should)  be pro Axis, but may not become active easily and an attack ON them should be possible without penalties for the Allies

Ireland - maybe true neutral (depending on mapsize Irland could be a nice staging point for the Luftwaffe ;)

Yugoslavia might be pro Allies - can’t think of a trigger atm

South America (if its part of the game, I think the only pro Axis countries could be Argentine (rivalry with Brazil -which should be pro Allies…) an Paraguay/Uruguay. - others could be True NEutrals but easily swayed to the Allies side…

Usually We stop the game when one side outproduces the other by a certain margin (depending also on the number of pieces on board).

The Kriegsmarine had a “Minenschiff” called Hansestadt Danzig, it was a converted passenger ship - not a whole class and is certainly NOT the mini we have ;)

    • Please Help!

I own the old AAM Pacific Board - How does the New Pacific 40 board compare to this.

I knw Russia is included with a few Territories, Cananda seems to be split, but aside from that - do we get more sea zones (a few - many)? Are there more island territories (sees because somewhere I heard there is a French island (new Caledonia?)?

      Did China get more territories?

In other words how do the 2 maps compare…

      Thanks in advance!

    • RE: Ship IPC values

I don’t know - I found the pricing very reasonable so far.

building a BB is a mayor investment and takes time.

even for DDs you need the slips and it could take months

producing (assembling) tanks is done in days…

For the steel used in a BB you could easily build several thousand tanks.

if you compare numbers;: shermans were produced: 55.000 or so (?)

at the end of the war the US had 4000 warships (?) - no sure about the numbers ;)

      A German Tank campany (3 platoons) were 17 Tanks - 4 companies to a batallion make 52 tanks…

1944 the Panzer Lehr Division (model division) had 101 Panzer IV and 89 Panzer V (Panther) + 31 Tank Destroyer (IV L48) and just under 10 StuG III and that was FULL STRENGTH.

There were ONLY 43 different Panzerdivisions in the Wehrmacht (+7 SS)

That in mind I think the current prices are quite “historical”

    • RE: Locations of Air and Naval Bases

I would put a naval into “western” France - Germany used this as a staging point for subs end based some cruisers (includung the Scharnhorst/Gneisenau) for some time there.

If italy is split in 2 territories I would put an IC in northern Italy and a naval into southern Italy (Taranto was the strategically most important harbour)

I would not put an air into Italy  -  simply because the Regia MArina and regia aeronautica did NOT corordinate well

I’d prefer Lybia split into more than one territory - Tobruk could be a minor naval base …

A minor IC would also fit into Bohemia (if it exists) - the Sjkoda works were a major weapons manufacturer in the 30s

I’d say no air in Crete - German planes never really could reach Egypt from there

    • RE: France and what should be done about it.

      @oztea:

But on the international stage, the french screwed the pooch

After it was agreed with the joint declaration of war on germany by the UK and France, it was decided…

“Neither power shall surrender to germany unless the other consents to that surrender.”

When the german blitz cut off the Brits at Dunkirk and the road was open to Paris; what happened? Did france ‘need’ paris? was it their industrial base?, agricultural center? No…it was their cultural center, and when it was seriously threatened they surrendered, without even asking their allies or putting up resistance.

They caved to the Germans, and the Brits resented them for it, and the French resent the british for evacuating. In an alliance of convenience, driving a wedge bettwen the two parites (in this case the german blitz) is the best way to win. Divide and conquer so to speak.

France is looked down upon because, they could have fought on, it would be a struggle, a struggle for their country, however in surrendering they hoped their “nation” would be preserved, albeit under German occupation. The city of lights survived and so did millions of frenchmen, the musems and statues all endure to this day. But what does it say about a country not even willing to take up arms to protect its treasures, its people? a government that gives in to occupation, to survive as a nation in bondage. And herin lies the question, if the french didnt stand and fight for their own country, what does that say about it, is whatever cultural value it has worth fighting for? worth dieing for? Or are the french so progressive that they realize that these treasueres had to survive becuase they are so valueable, and surrender was the only option.

Yes and the french AND Brits should have opened a second front when we attacked Poland - neither of them did anything of value,…

so please don’t take a politicants pomise as thruth - they all lie.

The French were unable to continue the war and a “honorable” surrender helped to preserve much of Frances latter ability to FIGHT AGAIN…

    • RE: Weseruebung

The game starts (IIRC) just before case yellow thus Weserübung  is (almost) over.

I do not believe the subs were built in Fance and Norwa. The Deschimag (and other) yards built them in Germany.

Sub pens - might be a nice idea, but i think it would be just another mechanic to remember - keep it S&S

    • RE: France

      Concerning Vichy.

France surrendered and made peace with Germany (sort of), so all French Colonies should be “Neutral” after the Germans conquer Paris+ the Coast (Dunkirk)

technically the Free French Forces weree NOT representing France as France had a working government (De Gaulle could be seen as a mercenary /rebel - he was only a patriot because the Allies won - history is written by the winner - but that does not belong here ;)).

most Vichy territories were soon attacked and most switched sides when attacked

Indochine fell to the japanese in 1940 (before the attack on PH), but the French even fought (and lost) a war against Siam in 1940…

Syria was attacked by the Brits - put up a little fight and surrendered/threw in their lot with the Allies, but before Germany flew some planes to Iraq )stopover in Syria) to support Iraq against the Brits…

The African Colonies soon joined the Free french Forces (one Genral was marching fom West Africa through Tcahd to Egypt/Lybia IIRC)

no infos on the Indian Ocean posessions…

Morocco and Algeria were defended by vichy troops when the allies landed there - put up a little fight and surrendered, but this forced GErmany/Italy to ship troops to Tunesia  -i believe at the same time Germny decided to get rid of Vichy and occupied it.

So the simplest rule for Vichy would be - put some troops in the territories - no build up - prevented by the treaty with Germany ;) - if one side decides to attack a Vichy territory the troops defend for ONE  combat round and then the attacker gets the territory.

If France has a fleet at the time of the surrender Brit ships should be forced to attack them - with ALL adjacent units, but after one combat round the survivors join the Free french…

      just my 2 cents

BTW - please stop the Froggy bashing :D

    • RE: Europe

A few things to the last version of the map:

Low Countries should be Neutral/allied Leaning as Germany attacked them and France during the same time.

Crete is still Greek owned in 1940 (not UK)

      Aden should be UK Posession

Southwest Africa - wrong better call it Cameroon

IraQ - not UK posession in 1940 - they were independent and fought a war against the Brits AFTER the fall of France

Falklands are located wrong (its Fireland IIRC)

Argentine Axis leaning - OK maybe, but giving them Chile and Paraguay too ?

      @Adlertag:

Now since Greg Leeds is the new boss in WOTC, and since he is a real bussines-man he will try harder to make money even if we are in the middle of a depression, he will give us a new A&A game every 4 month. In august we get A&A 1942. In january 2010 we get A&A Europe revised, and in august 2010 we get A&A Stalingrad, and in january 2011 we get A&A North Africa, and in august 2011 we get A&A the Great War 1914-1918. This is what both I and IL belive in. This is our religion.

MAn I would love to get that THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 GAME . 8-)

    • RE: AA50 1941 w/NO - Allied Allways Win

If the US buys some ships to force japan to also Build ships the advantage is still on Japans side. japan needs ONLY to match the US builds at most. As usually japan has more BBs (usually) to soak up losses, It “only” has to maintain a fleet in "striking distance to the US setup areas. Of xcourse it needs fighter cover, but that is easily achieved as Japan has a definite carrier advantage (same as bbs) in the early stages.

I too often saw the US building up for a strike on Europe/Africa and then they had to go a few rounds against constant naval landings from Japanese troops. In the meantime Italy (must also build some ships IMHO) sailed out and damaged the US attack fleet while Germany spent a turn or two to strike at the UK ships.

IMHO if the Euro Axis strikes a balance betweed agressive defense and heavy blows on dangerous Allies - build up points (Germany has the inner line - often enough units used for an attack on one front are available for defense action on the other front next turn), they are in a 2-1 position for a win.

regarding an 8 inf attack on turn 2 on africa - yeah thats a really bad blow to the axis, thats why I NEVER saw a game in AA50 where Germany did not commit the bulk of its airforce/navy to take out UK ships in the biggest number possible. Sometimes the Luftwaffe got blown out of the air, but more often the UK built ship after ship only to watch them sunk by the Luftwaffe - so the main weight in this thrust must be done by the US.

If I may say so - Japan does not have to go after russia immediately, buiding up a potential threat to the US West coast is more important.

I do not say that teh Axis does suceed every time, but they really get a 50+% share…

In the games I played so far (slight Axis advantage) Lady Luck decided the outcome of the games. More than once by a single streak of bad rolls in ONE offensive, but also by some attition to one side by losing the more risky attacks, when probabilty would have sid otherwise.
