I don’t want ANY overlap with ingame OOB pieces…
US will now have 3 different fighter sculpts (P-38 & F6F OOB/ P-51 or F4U - FMG) and Japan will have ONE sculpt? (the Zero… bla bla bla)
No overlap!

Crusader,
We already have the F6F Hellcat! It is in Guadalcanal and AA50, as well as the old A&AP. That is why FMG should choose other airplanes that do not look like the P-38 or F6F.
I agree with you, Variable - but not with crusader.
P-51 is very unique - and the Corsair’s wings would probably help in recognition.
but THREE (remember, he wanted P-47 and F4U!) radial engined craft would be a bit much to recognize.
_definatly two different tanks!
either early war or late war
medium and heavy tank
very important_
No, 3 different type.
Medium & heavy tank and……self-propelled gun!
For USA, USSR and Germany it’s a must…About the US fighter.
2 different type. US army = P47 (I love that monster)
US navy = Vought Corsair
I love the idea of a self propelled gun.
The fighters…. not so much. All are radial engined fighters, and along with the OOB F6F Hellcat would look indistinguishable compared to each other.
DEFINITELY an “early war” and a “late war” tank piece, as well as the OOB one.
So the Germans would have the Panzer III and Tiger as well as the OOB Panther
Here goes (I’ll do this for the other countries when you post them:)
Current OOB units: (per Krieghund)
Japanese Artillery: Model 92
Japanese Mechanized Infantry: SdKfz 251 (German)
Japanese Tank: Type 95 Kyugo
Japanese Fighter: A6M2 “Zero”
Japanese Tactical Bomber: D3A1 “Val”
Japanese Strategic Bomber: 24J “Betty”
Japanese Battleship: Yamato class
Japanese Cruiser: Takao class
Japanese Destroyer: Fubuki class
Japanese Carrier: Shinano class
Japanese Submarine: I class
Japanese Transport: Hakusan Maru class

A little background: I have played Axis & Allies for 15 years, and own multiple copies of every edition – including a still in shrinkwrap copy of Nova Games Axis & Allies. I also own many of the expansions, including some rare ones. I believe that I bring a good viewpoint to the table, but that is just my own opinion and feel free to disagree. This piece is intended to be supportive towards the 1942 edition, not critical of the Anniversary edition. I hope I have been clear in this regard.
I was a little late to the AA50 party, not buying my 2 copies until this year. After reading all the bashing of the 1942 edition, I was a little hesitant to purchase it but went for it anyway and was blown away with the quality of the plastic pieces – the best in any Axis & Allies game, I believe. I then purchased my AA50 games (1 shrinkwrapped, 1 opened but all pieces sealed and unpunched)
I hate to say this, but I’d like to know what most of you have been smoking – because it is some powerful stuff. The fabled “component quality” of the AA50 edition was sadly missing – the board is paper thin and prone to warping, the box is too big to not get damaged in transit, and most glaringly the pieces are HORRIBLE. I need to photograph the pieces side by side, but the 1942 US battleship is a good 4mm bigger than the AA50 US battleship, and my pieces were uniformly smaller and had flashing/molding problems. The ONLY piece that I saw that approached 1942 quality was the Italian tank (good size and width). In every other respect, 1942’s pieces are much superior.
In defense of AA50, the counters and play aids are marvelous – and the player receives counters for damage, etc, which is great. However, we don’t buy the game because it has nice cardboard – we buy it for a great board and great plastic pieces. In this respect Axis & Allies 1942 comes through with amazing pieces. In future reprints, I would kill the bottom charts on the game map and make Europe larger, but that is up to Avalon Hill.
You can find Axis & Allies 1942 for around $20-25 in most places and for that price it is a bargain. All I can say is, I love that Hasbro keeps producing more Axis & Allies games because it gives US, as consumers, the ability to pick and choose what we like among them and purchase those we value. I don’t understand when people talk about corporate greed – that would be Hasbro just producing 1 version and charging $150 for it, not 5-6 different copies, most under $30 – which is the price of a couple of meals. Thank you Hasbro – and I don’t mind paying more for a better product!

Ju-52’s!!!
All I know, is that the JU-52 will have to be the transport - and I am ecstatic!

I agree with IL +1000!
My idea was that, barring any obvious choices (IL-2 for Russia, etc), try to make an early-war/late-war compatibility. In other words, the German tank is a Panzer IV, so make a Panzer III or a Panzer 38(t) for early war (1939) purposes.
Using this logic, US fighter would probably be a P-40.
what part of the country was this?
Halifax and Lancaster, at the scale of A&A, would be darn near indistinguishable…
The only problem with that, Variable, is that the US is the only country in A&A that has already had 2 unique nation-specific fighters molded for it, in the F6F and the P-38. (I am ignoring Germany - the JU-87 is NOT a fighter!)
The problem would be that other nations would now have 2 fighter pieces (OOB and FMG), and the US would have 4!(2x OOB and 2x FMG) A bit much, eh?
Variable - I like your options, but I would send the F4U to the back of the pack. Take a look:

Pretty similar, eh?
And as far as I’m concerned they will supplement the WotC pieces!
FMG’s best course of action is to make great pieces, unique and well-made, in the OOB colors. Those who want them as stand alone pieces will be happy, and those who want to mix and match will also be happy!
C-47 is a definite! Who hasn’t heard of the DC-3?
Thanks, Entek.
I like your ideas, however I will say one thing in dissent - the P-47 is extremely similar to the F6F Hellcat (slight difference in canopy/greenhouse)
I think FMG is trying to go for “at-a-glance” recognizable figures - Hasbro scored points here with the P-38, as NOTHING else looks like it. With the P-38 and the F6F already being produced, I think a more logical choice would be the P-40 or the P-51
Note the difference between types:
Inline Engine - P-51

Inline Engine - P-40

Radial Engine - P-47

Radial Engine - F6F

Twin-Boom - P38

Naturally, the P-38 is one of the few twin-boom aircraft to have been succesfully used in WWII, so FMG will have to look elsewhere for Germany/Japan/UK. However, there is a wealth of dissimilar types, so it should be relatively easy.
Honestly, some of Hasbro’s models are pretty darn good - I actually like the B-17s, and from what I have seen FMG would be producing products as good and slightly better than Hasbro. Look at the new Panzer model, as well as the F6F Hellcat and the Spitfire… All of those are very good quality pieces. Also, I have yet to find a maker that models infantry pieces as good as Hasbro.
Mixing & matching is my whole idea - and I am sure that will be possible.
I LOVE that you are doing different units - that is the whole point for me, I am buying pieces to throw in the game and mix & match. For example, in Pacific 1940 I hate P-38’s on carriers, so I brought in F6F Hellcats from my old A&APacific game (Thanks WotC for keeping US colors the same) and have them as sea-based fighters and p-38’s as land based. There are no differences (game-wise) between the two, just aesthetics :-D
I like the B-24 - BUT, it looks like the stock UK bomber (Halifax). I vote for the B-29
