Larry has already said Germany will be grey. That’s the only colour hint so far.
I find that sort of inconsistency really annoying.

I’d buy new Italian pieces if I could get them in a color other than FMG brown or OOB brown.
Oh, and an irregular unit (in knee-down position, like the Fortress America partisan unit), usable as Mujahadeen/Mahdist/Touareg/Berber.
I was looking for somewhere to put this sentiment, without opening a new thread…
I would love to see an eventual Commonwealth Infantry pack. Some of the following have been mentioned, but here’s my thought:
– Indian Infantry (with turban)
– Gurkha Rifles (as a Raj Spec Forces unit)
– ANZAC Digger (to replace WOTC’s abomination)
– Askari Infantry (this sculpt might be used not only for UK variety, but in other colors for colonial Italians, Turks, and French)
– Canadian Infantry isn’t as important to me (I would use ANZACs from Pacific 2010), but that is certainly another popular request.
The giant digger can sail around in his giant aircraft carrier.
The microcephaly also doesn’t help. Bad sculpt all around.
1. I’d get laid, eat a steak, and maybe explore my painful childhood through some professional help.
2. If, failing those methods of simmering down, I’d consider which of my mannerisms might be prone to parody, and I’d curtail those. Just in case things go badly.
3. If, failing those measures of self-improvement and failing to prevent becoming the butt of decades worth of jokes, I’d simply quit while I was ahead and hope that future generations would overlook the whole “evil, genocidal” thing.
4. Failing to even notice that now would be a good time to say “Cash me out, boys, I’m calling it a good night!”, I would definitely sue for peace before “Oops, no more Germans in Prussia for the rest of eternity… my bad.”
5. If I’d whizzed past all the signposts on my inevitable path to a sad bunker, I’d notice that moment as my last chance to grasp at a modicum of human decency, and I’d pen a contrite little note, owning up to all the aforementioned mistakes.
A couple observations, and then I will promise to myself that I’ll avoid this silly thread.
1. Time scale. Some people have no ability to appreciate it.
2. Pragmatism. If things are changing at a rapid rate… if that change causes undesirable economic, agricultural, and human consequences (we’ll ignore the childish nihilists and eugenicists for a moment)… if you have only one lever to push back against the change… then that is what you do.
3. Common sense. The pee in the pool analogy is apt. With how much of our own filth are we willing to live? Pollution okay with you? So, how much? Is there any point at which you might find it unbearable? If not, then you might be a millenarian and the rest of us should not take you seriously.
You could mix the 1st and 2nd edition ANZACs to represent different Commonwealth dominions.
Could spraypaint the Italians to be German proxies/minors.
I was following those as well. It’s only Italy and Anzacs that are commanding those prices. A couple of thoughts…
1. The game might be far more expensive in some parts of the world, compared to where you (or I) live, and these might be (well, they are) acceptable.
2. $50 is still less than the cost of the full game, and these bidders may not realize that there are new pieces for ALL of the nations.
3. Some people get crazy with bidding, as with gambling, and might not be able to control themselves.
Who knows.
Yeah.
Neither my politics nor my taste in music fits with that stream of “thought”.
Obviously, the pigment predates its co-opting. There’s other hilarious things about how the long forgotten Old Prussians got their name borrowed and battered, but I’m really just interested in the historic Kaiser Wilhelm associations.
Lost in all this is my question about the availability of hex triplets, which I probably shouldn’t have put in this thread. Sorry.
@CWO:
Given the choice, I’d prefer to represent Germany with prussian blue.
I’m personally very fond of blue as a colour, but I think it would be problematic in A&A for a number of reasons. First: blue pieces for Germany would cause confusion with the blue French pieces that were introduced in Europe 1940. Prussian blue in particular is a shade which is a fairly close match for the French one used in E40. Second: although the connections aren’t perfect or systematic, some of the sculpt colours used in A&A relate in some way to the uniforms or flags or equipment of the countries for which they are used – consider for instance the US Army’s fondness for painting things green. Blue isn’t a colour I recall being greatly used by Nazi Germany or the Wehrmacht (except possibly the Luftwaffe). Third: if the suggestion of Prussian blue is intended to relate to the state of Prussia (and perhaps to Prussia’s blue-enameled Pour Le Merite order, a.k.a. the Blue Max), this idea would clash with the fact that the separate German states (including Prussia) were effectively abolished in the early years of the Nazi government. An added factor is that Hitler despised the Prussian military aristocracy; the feeling was mutual, so it could be argued that Prussian blue would, if anything, be a suitable colour for depicting anti-Nazi officers like von Staufenberg.
Hi,
Don’t really want to get into an argument about it, as it’s just a preference of mine - I’d like to buy units that color. That said, prussian blue is a shade quite visually distinct from the basic blue used for the OOB French pieces. Prussian blue is usually depicted with less tone and saturation than navy blue, for comparison.
As for blackshirts or wermacht greys, those are no more important to me than dunkelblau, or modern drabs. I’d like player-color variants that could integrate with a game that falls outside the years 1939-1945.
I agree that within the context of the way many people seem to play the game, that prussian blue german pieces could also be used as factional rebels. I’ve thought a lot about employing a simple “influence” purchase system with which players could purchase rebel proxies
Here’s a question:
If the blue OOB French pieces are De Gaul’s, but HGB and others speak of light blue as being for Free French… what color is the Vichy Armée de l’Armistice and colonial sympathizers? One of HGB’s Axis Minor colors?
By the way, why did no one ever consider producing German pieces in a Prussian Blue variant?
Hello Redking. I am curious, are you asking for WW2 German units in Prussian Blue? If so, what faction would they represent? Most people use dark grey for regular units and black for elite/SS units.
Hi,
Given the choice, I’d prefer to represent Germany with prussian blue. Rather have tyrian purple for Italy as well.
Hi Coach, and Variable,
I noticed in an old thread that you had a hard time getting FMG’s color codes for his pieces, and I’m wondering if you might share publicly the color hex triplets for the colors you use.
I’ll not end up producing my own plastic pieces (wish I could - would start ca.1895), but I’d like the ability to produce my own print graphics in matching colors.
By the way, why did no one ever consider producing German pieces in a Prussian Blue variant?
If you can, thanks!
Tall Paul,
I envision the smg infantry the same way - as special/shock forces.
I will probably purchase more rifles as regular infantry (from HBG).
However, I maintain fantasies of repainting my Italians tyrian purple, and creating a more “scenario-neutral” game where Italy can influence other minor powers, so having the excess of naval craft might come in handy some day (but probably not).
Received my order from FMG and thought I’d share my count:
6 commanders
13 submachine gun inf
11 rifle inf
12 artillery
6 trucks
12 autoblinda mechs
6 carro armato tanks
6 semovente tanks
12 fighter planes
6 divebombers
6 bombers
6 cargo planes
12 transports
12 subs
12 destroyers
6 cruisers
6 battleships
6 carriers
Only deviation is one extra submachinegun and one less rifle.
My complaints are minor: I might have liked more diff between two infantry types, more tank units vs naval units, and different size ratios among the motor land units (the Italians themselves might be at fault here - didn’t they know I’d turn their war into my amusement?).
But the sculpts are very nice, and I appreciate the balance of expanded variety and detail vs slavishness to minutiae.
I was so disappointed to discover that this wasn’t a thread about sculpts for the British Raj.
Regarding cost of Trucks (Road Transport):
With Artillery costing 4 and Infantry costing 3….
the combined cost of an SPG/Artillery-Tank (presumably a cost near 6, which is similar to the tank whose chassis it often shared) and a Mechanized Infantry (cost 4) should exceed the cost of the Artillery + Infantry + Truck.
If not, and all other things are equal (hitting power of SPG at or near towed Artillery), the incentive to purchase Mech and SPG is diminished.
In fact, wouldn’t it be another advantage of using Trucks that if you suffer Infantry casualties while winning the battle, you could still slide new, cheap Infantry into the group by transporting them in via Trucks?
So, to make the SPG and Mech combo viable, the Truck should cost at least 3. However, reasoning that Trucks cost more than (or even as much as) Mech Infantry seems a hard sell to me.
Therefore, I may keep the costs of the two combinations equal, and go with this:
Artillery Tank (SPG) cost 6 / att 2 / def 3 / move 2
Truck cost 3 / att 0 / def 0 / move 2 / can transport one Infantry and/or one Artillery / may NOT move into any territory more than 2 spaces beyond an IC owned by any player (limiting their range).
For naval and air bases I use old (1976?) Avalon Hill Diplomacy pieces.
You can find them used online, sometimes in decent numbers.
For the naval base I use the anchor (Diplomacy navy), stood upright.
For the air base I use the star (Diplomacy army), stood upright.
I’ll get around to painting them all eventually, but in the meantime, they work nicely.
