@allweneedislove:

[
yes it probably is game over. game over for allies if they acquired those 3 techs they probably spent a fortune on them and have few actual units.

USA can afford it. They are either not at war(early game depending on what Japan does) or they are at war and have extra income to play with.

• RE: Kill Australia First

I haven’t played the new version yet but looking at the map set up it seems like if Japan allows the American player to build up they are screwed. Japan has to attack by turn 2 at the latest(someone else besides China)…it seems to me that with skilled allied players Japan is going to have a very hard time winning in the long run unless it attacks pretty much right away. Which makes the game unbalanced either way in my mind.

• RE: Sea Lion A Success!!

@Tavenier:

In all previous versions we played with the houserule that when a capital is taken the victim must pay the IPC value of that country to the conquerer, but keeps the rest and keeps getting income. Then the UK can still build in Canada, or somewhere.

With this version however, Germany needs the IPC from capturing Paris and France can’t be allowed to keep building elsewhere (Normandy or a conquered neutral).

In our houserule a succesful sealion doens’t mean the end of the allies. Here it does.

Not really America is more then capable of taking back the UK…and if Germany builds to stop America that really really really helps the Russian player. And chances are even if they build to stop America they will fail anyway. Unless you can take Russia in 2-3 turns which if the Russian player has any skill at all you can’t.

• RE: R1 fighter to London?

@GrizzlyMan:

Germany can’t do a G1 sealion. By the time they’d be in position, Russia could have the fighter in London.

Germany can do a G2 sealion at which point Russia still can’t do anything. Believe me if the Amercian player could build planes and send them to the UK they would but they can’t either. Its one of the things that makes sealion possible.

• RE: Map Question Turkey

You can’t go through that strait because Turkey is netural and won’t allow it. IMO its not worth taking because it turns everything else pro ally which means that you have just made America(in South America and other places like spain) a lot richer then it needs to be. And really America doesn’t need 10 extra IPC each turn it really doesn’t.

• RE: Would it be crazy to wait until turn 2 to take France with Germany?

Yes France has to fall turn 1 because otherwise the UK can renforce it. That means more losses turn 2. Its also one less turn Germany has to deal with the UK before America and Russia get into it.

Its like asking “Would it be crazy to leave the UK with a fleet after turn 1?”

Thats also yes…might as well conceede the game at that point.

• RE: I need advice for Axis

IMO Germany has to do some things early game to have any chance at all.
1. Take out France turn 1(or have Italy finish it off)
1. Kill the UK fleet turn 1 and build transports to get ready for SeaLion
2. Take London or failing that cripple the UK(with subs sitting off their coast) to the point that it becomes pretty useless.
3. Have a large enough fleet to force Amercia to spend time building esort fleets instead of just rushing transports into Africa or Europe.
4. Build a stack of tanks for the attack into Russia. Because if Germany doesn’t attack Russia will.

• RE: USSR Invasion

Russia should build 2 lines of units on the border. First off on the frontlines lots of guys to chew up German tanks if Germany attacks. Then on the second line have tanks and planes to either counter attack Germany or attack with the guys if Germany doesn’t attack. Russia is by no means doomed or unable to take over Europe on its own. I am not sure the skill level of the Russian players mentioned in these posts but a skilled Russian player is more then cabable of holding their own.

Oh and btw…Russia shouldn’t turtle they should attack back.

• RE: Hyper-Monroe Doctrine

America would just take them the first few turns anyway so maybe they figured whats the point. It would only give the USA extra guys which is the last thing they need.

• RE: Does Sealion break the Game(Europe Only)

@jim010:

[You can’t block the G3 London attack.

If you get luck and survive with some UK ships, then you could stand in front of the Germans.  But I doubt it would prevent the Germans from pushing through - and that scenario wil not be the norm.  Likely you won’t have any ships in range except for the Gibraltar fleet.
Oh no? It happened in the game I played last night. Germany got crappy dice rolling and the UK player took a bunch of risks, managed to take down the German AirForce. That really changed the game and made it pretty much impossible for Germany to invade England. Amazing though Germany managed to sneak a fleet across into Mexico and distracted America for another 2 turns defending itself. It was decided after bad rolling in Russia that the allies would win out even with Amercia distracted and the game was called an allied victory.

• RE: A&A Europe 1940 Game through build phase of R8 (pics)

I have a hard time beliving that America can’t simply buy enough stuff to overpower German defenses in Europe. The issue is getting there because Germany should have a decent fleet contesting landings. The allied players were either 1. Playing stupidly repeatly or 2. Rolling really badly.  The allied should win 95% of the games all things being equal. This game is still heavly weighted in the favor of the allies.

• RE: Scrambling off of the UK?

The reason that Germany wasn’t able to invade England was that England had a fleet blocking the war. Remove the fleet and they can indeed make it across to invade.

• RE: UK pretty weak

I played a game last night in which Uk lost its fleet turn 1 and by building a mix of guys and tanks instead of just guys was able to take back Scotland when Germany landed there turn 2. Over the next 3 turns I watched the Uk airforce defend again and again and help make the UK into a fortress. Even without America’s help. I had never seen that done before but it happened. And the German player was the most skilled player on the board, its just the risks the Uk player took paid off.

• RE: My review copy of Axis & Allies Europe 1940 has arrived

@boboshonda:

It was.  That’s why I can’t really make a call on how even the game sets up.  The rolls were so hot for the Axis and so cold for the Allies.  Other then France holding off Germany in G1, all the other battles were wins for the Axis with minimal loss.  And I do believe if I had gone at Russia with both the Axis countries after England fell, it would have been a relatively easy victory.  Splitting them and taking Germany to NA was fun, but not the best choice.  I did it just to say I did it.  America could have held out a long time, I’m sure, seeing as they could put 20 infantry out a turn with their new found wealth and two major ICs.  But it was fun and I look forward to another game of E40 before we do a full Global!

Honesty with a skilled American player they would build a mix of tanks and guys to kick you off the mainland should you manage to land. It should be impossible for Germany to gain a foothold that America can’t break given the supply issues involved. Also with a decent Russian player building for 4 turns before war taking Russia shouldn’t be easy by any stretch.

• RE: My review copy of Axis & Allies Europe 1940 has arrived

Waw, harsh game for the allies!

So if England falls, USA better gets some DD blockers in the Atlantic.

Although, if England falls, isn’t the game usually over?

The American player makes a lot of money and can easily defend aganist Germany. He should have built a fleet to block the way to the American mainland. It clearly was badly played. America has no standard builds but instead needs to build based on what is going on. He could have built a bunch of Battleships and destoryers to bar the war and also built guys and tanks to defend the mainland. The other issue is that America should rarely play defenseive. With their IPC count they can easily afford losses that would cripple most other nations. A 1-1 trade is a win for America.

Even if the UK falls most of the time the German player looks to Russia cause its a lot easier to go there then to build massive amounts of transports to go bother America. I have seen America take back a conquered UK from Germany before. Its not easy or cheap but they can afford it.
